Krauthammer: Scalise Ought to Voluntarily Resign as Whip

Syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer doesn’t think embattled Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) should resign his congressional seat after acknowledging (perhaps prematurely?) that he once spoke to an audience alleged to be overflowing with White Supremacists. Instead, he argued, he should resign his leadership position as a “gesture” of good will, thereby humbling himself publicly and softening the growing backlash against his own party:

As of this writing, Scalise doesn’t appear to be following Krauthammer’s advice. He does, however, have the support of Republican House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH).

Boehner said this about his colleague in a statement yesterday:

“More than a decade ago, Representative Scalise made an error in judgment, and he was right to acknowledge it was wrong and inappropriate. Like many of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, I know Steve to be a man of high integrity and good character. He has my full confidence as our Whip, and he will continue to do great and important work for all Americans.”
