What Should Republicans Do Now? From Wayne LaPierre: 'Stand Up for the People, and We the People Will Stand Behind You'

In an exclusive symposium for Townhall Magazine, "What Should Republicans Do Now?", some of the foremost movement leaders offer insight into what the newly empowered Republicans must work on to save America from the Obama agenda and the ever-growing power of the federal government.

The Nov. 2 GOP tidal wave will shift control of the U.S. House of Representatives to the party of Reagan, blunt the liberal Democratic Senate majority and could bring the Obama agenda to a screeching halt.

Now, the GOP needs to lead. What should their agenda be?

Townhall asked leading conservatives to offer advice to the new Republican majority on taxes, spending, illegal immigration, ObamaCare, social issues, the judiciary and the preservation of the Constitution.

(Read excerpts of entries from Glenn Beck, Michele Bachmann, Ed Meese and Robert Spencer.)

Today, here's an excerpt of National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre's entry, "Stand up for the People, and 'We the People' Will Stand Behind You":
... [A]t its root, this election revolved around freedom.

Above all else, the American people want to be free. They demand the sovereignty to define their own destiny. And they refuse to surrender their liberty or safety to those who promise both but deliver neither. ...

[M]y advice to our leaders -- winners, losers, Democrats, Republicans or anyone else -- is the same as it has ever been: If you want your country to thrive and prosper, and if you want to avoid the political self-destruction that consumed so many careers on Election Day, then go back to the basics. Stand up for the values and virtues this nation was built upon. Stand up for what makes our system the inspiration for freedom-loving people around the planet. Defend the principles that have defined this nation since 1776. ...

Uphold your oath of office. When you put your hand on the Bible and promise to protect and defend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, mean it when you say it, and after you say it, stick by it. ...

Restore the rule of law and return to the tried-and-true principles of law enforcement by putting criminals behind bars where they can’t harm good people. When good people exercise their right to protect themselves, don’t stand in their way.

When George Soros and the United Nations and globalists and big-city busybodies like New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg try to get you to accept some lesser measure of Second Amendment freedom for the American people, remember what happened on Election Day -- and then do what you know your constituents would do.

Be true to the people who elected you: If you don’t represent their views, they’ll fire you, too, and elect representatives who truly represent them. ...

This is the greatest country the planet has ever seen because the principles it was built upon are universal and eternal. Their single, sacred common denominator is the notion of human freedom. Leaders who abandon or betray that birthright of the people will, in turn, be banished by the American people.

The message American voters sent their leaders on Election Day was the same warning Patrick Henry issued our nation’s leaders two centuries ago: “Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel.”
