A Matter of Our National Character

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

During last week’s Republican presidential debate the former CEO of Hewlett Packard and Republican candidate Carly Fiorina made an impassioned comment about the Planned Parenthood abortion for profit scandal, stating that it was a matter of our national character.

Indeed Ms. Fiorina was correct, Americans cannot stand by and simply ignore the fact that Planned Parenthood has been butchering tiny babies and selling their body parts for a hefty profit for quite some time now. Any country that would advocate for that practice to continue needs to do some serious self-evaluation about what kind of a people we are.

Also considering the recent reports coming out of the Pentagon saying that American soldiers in Afghanistan are being told to ‘look the other way’ when Afghan military and police colleagues sexually abuse young boys, that too calls into question what is America’s character.

American soldiers with otherwise stellar records are being punished and forced out of the military because they have exhibited what are the very best qualities of American character in Afghanistan, for refusing to stand by and look the other way when young children are being sexually abused and exploited.

During the Vietnam War, American helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson refused to do nothing when he saw atrocities being committed by American troops under the command of Lieutenant William Calley in the South Vietnamese hamlet of My Lai. He took decisive action to prevent further loss of innocent life. Truly an example of what the character of the American military is all about.

But how far have we fallen as a nation when we are willing to accept Planned Parenthood’s depravity, with pro-abortion politicians making excuses for Planned Parenthood, and even refusing to watch video-taped evidence clearly showing that the sales of unborn children’s body parts was encouraged by Planned Parenthood policy-makers. Does the ‘head-in-the-sand’ tactic change the facts? Hardly.

How far have we fallen as a nation where our military leadership is instructing soldiers to turn a blind eye to atrocities committed in war and not protecting the most vulnerable among us, instead of following the example of Hugh Thompson?

For more than 60 years now we have watched as American culture has coarsened to the point where what was once considered deviant behavior has been ‘mainstreamed’ by politicians concerned only with courting a particular voting bloc.

Drug usage has become commonplace, in fact even legalized in some states to facilitate a drug culture concerned only with getting high. Ask any of them about what President John F. Kennedy once called on Americans to do, to “ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country,” and you’ll be met with a glazed over blank stare. Those sentiments expressed by President Kennedy are foreign to the ‘if it feels good do it’ class in this country.

Daily it seems Americans are subjected to examples of the downward spiral this country has embarked upon, which eventually will lead to a complete societal breakdown. Anyone who promotes what had once been considered to be “mainstream family values” are shouted down by the liberal left and called “haters.”

The character of our nation has gotten out of whack. Common decency, moral character, and conservative thought are ridiculed by the proponents of modern culture among the Hollywood elites who promote through their films and programming something far different than ‘traditional values.’ Traditional values appear to be nothing more than a punchline out on the ‘left coast.’

In Washington, D.C. Americans are forced to vote for the ‘lesser of two evils’ repeatedly in elections where politicians tell us all that they are going to do for us, when they have no intentions of doing so once elected.

In the Halls of Congress it seems one has to go along to get along. Any outsider who speaks to principle and integrity is hounded out of office by the political power-brokers and career politicians occupying the positions of leadership.

And in the White House lies and illegal actions have become a daily occurrence with an administration thumbing their collective noses at ‘we the people.’ Caring little for what the majority of Americans have voiced and responding only to a minority who demand more and more changes to American culture.

Like an old analog television our moral character as a nation seems to be on the fritz. We are now living in an era where what was once right is now wrong, and what was wrong is now right. And our character as a nation suffers.
