The Difference Between Running and Serving

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Anyone who has ever run for office knows this: Running FOR an office is far, far different than serving IN an office if you win.

In my wild and varied career I have actually run for office - a couple of times for City Council of the metropolis of Marietta, Ohio 45750. The first time I lost by two votes. By the time my second attempt came around, I was married and the woman who was to become the Mullings Director of Standards & Practices took command of the campaign and I won easily.

Then … I had to serve. I was put on the Planning and Zoning, and the Police and Fire Committees. The latter because, during my seven-and-a-half year undergraduate career at Marietta College, I ended up on a first-name basis with just about every member of the police force.

I had, foolishly as it turned out, run on a platform of "The Marietta Code of Ordinances is woefully out of date. We should delete it, return to the original ten laws - the Thou Shalt Nots - and start again."

Made for a really good applause line at candidate cattle shows but after I won, the President of the City Council decided to teach me a lesson and appointed me chairman of a select committee to overhaul the Marietta City Codes.

During the recent campaign for President, candidate Obama pledged to close the prison at Guantánamo. The American Civil Liberties Union ran a full page ad in the New York Times to remind one and all of that promise.

In the accompanying press release the ACLU wrote:

Obama, as a candidate, pledged to "close Guantánamo, reject the Military Commissions Act and adhere to the Geneva Conventions."

The ACLU, also called for President Obama to foreswear anything stronger than reduced potty breaks in interrogations, saying,

The ACLU calls on President-elect Obama to sign Day One executive orders banning the use of torture and abuse.

In case you didn't think they were serious, the ACLU wrote: There is no room for patience or delay in these areas. We have to hold President-elect Obama's feet to the fire if we're going to turn hope into reality.

Let's take a moment to examine that phrase: "Feet to the Fire."

In one sentence the ACLU's demands that unsavory techniques be banned from questioning suspected terrorists. In another, the ACLU urges putting the feet of the President of the United States into a flame to force him - torture him, if necessary - to do what they want.

Interesting, huh!?

This came to my attention because of President-elect Obama's interview with George Stephanopoulos yesterday. In one section, George asked about that pledge - the one the ACLU is willing to betray its core civil libertarian values to make him live up to - to close Guantánamo.

From the transcript:

OBAMA: It is more difficult than I think a lot of people realize and we are going to get it done but part of the challenge that you have is that you have a bunch of folks that have been detained, many of whom who may be very dangerous who have not been put on trial or have not gone through some adjudication. And some of the evidence against them may be tainted even though it's true. And so how to balance creating a process that adheres to rule of law, habeas corpus, basic principles of Anglo American legal system, by doing it in a way that doesn't result in releasing people who are intent on blowing us up. [emphasis mine]

Note THAT construct: "It is more difficult than people realize." It was more difficult than candidate Obama thought during the campaign. President Bush and Vice President Cheney knew EXACTLY how difficult it was. In fact, it appears they had it about right.

Apology implied and accepted.

The discussion about Guantánamo continued:

STEPHANOPOULOS: So not necessarily first 100 days.

OBAMA: That's a challenge. I think it's going to take some time … I don't want to be ambiguous about this. We are going to close Guantánamo and we are going to make sure that the procedures we set up are ones that abide by our constitution.

See what I mean? Closing Guantánamo immediately is an easy campaign pledge. Closing it "some time" is the difficult reality of serving.

There is a world of difference.

ACLU Urges Torture
You got 'em now. The ACLU wants to torture Barack Obama. What hypocrites!

Unless it was just a figure of speech.

Galen and Idioms
In one paragraph, Galen says The ACLU called for President Obama to foreswear anything stronger than reduced potty breaks in interrogations, then just three paragraphs later he claims they are advocating torture because they want to hold his "Feet to the Fire."

Oh the irony.

Serving?
I would like to see someone elected to high office who wants to serve. Obama most certainly is not that someone; he is on record as saying he would be "ready to rule on day one." Ruling and serving aren't quite the same.

I think it was during Clinton's first presidential run that someone wrote something along the lines of "we've reached a point in our politics that the skills needed to be elected are the opposite of those needed to govern'. I think that is correct and I'm afraid that Obama will be the best example of that problem yet.

I SO hope I'm wrong!

ACLU Good liberals
The ACLU is like all good liberals..."Do as I say not as I do". "......Feet to the fire" is obviously a figure of speech but its not an idle threat when it comes to the the lengths the ACLU will be willing to go to get what they want. I am no Obamamaniac but they will dog him and dog him. Obama is obviously learning things about the job he never could have imagined when he was a candidate, I just hope he doesnt falter.

Could it be possible?
Could it be possible that we are now seeing a more "humbled" version of the Obamessiah now that he actually is on on all of the intelligence briefings?

Could it be possible that President Bush knows exactly what he is doing in this war on terror and has from day one?

Could it be possible for Obama to change his leopard spots after all?

For the sake of our troops and our country, let's hope so.

Danger!
As noted above, "Obama most certainly is not that someone; he is on record as saying he would be "ready to rule on day one." There is that word again, "rule!" The President is not our "ruler," but that is precisely what Barry wants to be. This is dangerous, because he, like every office holder, is supposed to be an employee of the people.

Boy Wonder
Although "feet to the fire" is a figure of speech, the ACLU is one of this nation's greatest enemies.

The "messiah" wanted this job SO much. Now he's going to experience for the first time in his life what it means to actually GOVERN.

Because protecting our constitutional rights is so un-American.

camanintx 1:54pm
"Because protecting our constitutional rights is so un-American."

But the ACLU IS NOT PROTECTING OUR CONSTUTIONAL RIGHTS. Their actions, in many cases, are the exact opposite of "protecting our Constitutional rights".

Therefore the ACLU IS one of this nation's greatest enemies.

Actions versus words
The old saying "actions speak louder than words" applies here. Unfortunately, with Obama's thin record all we had was "words". The American public bought it, though. Now he calls his promises "campaign rhetoric" which is a euphemism for "lie".

The plan ...
Barry Obama said whatever was necessary to win the election -- that's what Saul
Alinsky teaches in "Rules for Radicals". Obama will now do whatever is necessary to get re-elected; he will implement his less palatable beliefs quietly. If he is elected to a second term, he will become more aggressive, and I would not be shocked to see him pass an amendment so he can run for more than two terms.

Possibilities
"and I would not be shocked to see him pass an amendment so he can run for more than two terms." Does it not occur to you that he might not even bother to "pass an amendment?"

Playing President
B.Hussein has been playing president for two years. The rubber is about to meet the road now and the play acting will be history.

If he runs into a roadblock or two,he can fall back on the Clinton's who are his back-up team. They will lead him like the child he is.

Gray Ghost
The ACLU has done more damage to our society than any other organization,in my opinion. They are left wing and only accepts an occasional moderate or conservative case to look unbiased.

Gray Ghost says:

--------------------------------------------------
Would you care to back that up with an example?

when it gets real
As a kid, I remebered the old battlecry "I can't wait til I'm 18 so I can get the heck out of here". As an adult, I think I have a faint memory of someone saying, "We can't wait til you are 18 so you will get the heck out of here". -- Funny thing about life...

wbheff says:

-----------------------------------------------
There were some on the left who were certain Bush/Cheney would do anything to stay in office. I am certain your concerns are equally unfounded.

Geneva Conventions

We see proof here that the ACLU does not know what the GC's say, or else they are relying on their supporters not having a clue.

PEOB WILL close Gitmo!!
Closing GITMO, altho not the best course of action, is the one Mr will take because it's most EXPEDIENT!!
His real problem will be PLACEMENT of these "Lost Souls"!! Many, if not MOST, of the host countries want no part of these hoodlums, nor should they.. Maybe in General Population
with the Mexican Mafia is good for starters,What Say ??

Closing Gitmo
B.Hussein is taking in his in-laws,maybe he can take-in some of these detainees. If it goes bad,he may get a chance to see waterboarding up close and personal.

Waterboard a liberal.

Rowly-Gitmo/Inlaws
Just heard about the 8Nephew*..Is that for real?? Where did he come frm?
Actually, the more I hear about this situation, the more surreal it becomes..Wait and see I reckon!!

Roy
You've cited a fact about Gitmo that a lot of people - especially liberals - don't know about. Which is that a fair percentage of the detainees there at present are actually eligible for release. The reason they haven't been is that, as you pointed out, either their countries of origin, and other countries as well, don't want them back - or won't give the U.S. government sufficient reassurance that it won't abuse those detainees if they're repatriated back to their homelands. So by keeping them in Gitmo, the Bush Administration has actually saved some of them from what would probably have already been an early grave.

Of course, Obama could always release them into THIS country - and announce they're being given asylum here as political refugees. And the first Gitmo detainee that engages in an act of violence against Americans on our own soil after that will practically guarantee Obama of being a one-term president.

Roy
Not sure. I heard part of it on the radio today. Can't you picture the White House when all the family get there. Must be like 'Old Home Week'.

I don't think he has brought in his uncle from Kenya who lives in a hut and makes $12.00 a year. Nor his aunt-ee who lives in the slums. But heck,he hasn't even moved in yet.

Choose your adjective. . .
naieve, unqualified, unprepared etc., they all fit Obama to a "T".

I agree with whichever columnist said a few weeks ago that he'd gamble that BHO wakes up every night wondering why on earth he ever wanted the job he's about to undertake. Okay Mr. President, time to heal the world of all its ills.

rehabilitation
Have No Fear! Surely after 100 days under O's administration, those Gitmo detainees will be truely rehabilitated!

One of your best Mr. Galen!
Your noting of the A.C.L.U.'s choice of "feet to the fire", threatening torture, in an ad purporting to be appalled by that very thing was hilarious!

It is ironic that this bullying organization has inflicted mental torture on many small towns with shoestring budgets. They sweep in and threaten lawsuits over "heinous crimes" like displaying a creche in the public square at Christmas time. They know these towns can ill afford the cost of defense. the towns cave. the bully wins. It is odious.

Sounds like the ACLU
actually endorses torture, depending on the torturee.

"Abide by our constitution"?
"We are going to close Guantánamo and we are going to make sure that the procedures we set up are ones that abide by our constitution."

"Our" constitution governs Americans, not the entire world's population. Under that constitution, Americans have not only rights, but obligations. If the rights guaranteed (but largely ignored for Americans) are to be extended to the world community, isn't it implicitly, objectively, essential that the obligations also be extended?

That being the case, would that not necessitate world government to impose the obligations on those who have been granted guarantees? But, wait. Obama announced to the world, in Germany, that he was a "citizen of the world". Perhaps he is planning on being their emperor as well. why not? With policies as nebulous as hope and change, "Yes, we can"!

The New
definition of Weapons of Mass Destruction: Liberals in the government.

BHO says
he will close Gitmo. Exactly what does he mean by that? We want details. Is he going to close the prisoner quarters, or is he going to close the whole navy base and return it with the power plant, water treatment plant, etc to the Fidelistas? You really can't tell with him.
