Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Editors' Note: This piece is co-authored by Willie Soon

Sub-Saharan Africa remains one of Earth’s most impoverished regions. Over 90% of its people still lack electricity, running water, proper sanitation and decent housing. Malaria, malnutrition, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and intestinal diseases kill millions every year. Life expectancy is appalling, and falling.

And yet UN officials, European politicians, environmentalist groups and even African authorities insist that global warming is the gravest threat facing the continent. They claim there is no longer any debate over human-caused global warming – but ignore thousands of scientists who say human CO2 emissions are not the primary cause of climate changes, there is no evidence that future warming will be catastrophic, and computer models do not provide valid projections or “scenarios” for the future.

Warming alarmists use the “specter of climate change” to justify inhumane policies and shift the blame for problems that could be solved with the very technologies they oppose.

Past colonialism sought to develop mining, forestry and agriculture, and bring better government and healthcare practices to Africa. Eco-colonialism keeps Africans “traditional” and “indigenous,” by insisting that modern technologies are harmful and not “sustainable” in Africa.

Abundant, reliable, affordable electricity could power homes, offices, factories, schools and hospitals, create jobs, bring clean running water, and generate health and prosperity. But Rainforest Action Network and other pressure groups oppose coal and natural gas electricity generation on the grounds of climate change, and hydroelectric and nuclear power for other ideological reasons. They promote wind turbines and solar panels that provide electricity unreliably and in amounts too small to meet any but the most rudimentary needs.

Biotechnology could produce bumper crops that overcome droughts, floods, insects, viruses, and even global warming and cooling. But Greenpeace and Sierra Club oppose this precision hybrid-making technology, and instead promote land and labor-intensive subsistence farming.

DDT and insecticides could slash malaria rates that al Gore and other climate alarmists falsely claim are rising because of global warming. But Pesticide Action Network and other activists stridently oppose their use, and the European Parliament recently imposed new pesticide restrictions that will further restrict African access to life-saving chemicals.

Recent incidents dramatize how depraved and deadly global warming politics have become.

In Gambia, a UN-subsidized “national ministerial dialogue” promoted extremist views on “catastrophic climate change” and “sustainable development.” A Forestry and Environment department representative asserted that it would be “nearly impossible to adapt to … impacts such as the loss of the West Antarctic ice sheet … and [resultant] 5-15 meter sea level rise.”

There was no mention of the near-zero probability of such an event happening. Average annual temperatures in Antarctica hover around minus 50 Centigrade (-58 F), while average temperatures for the two-month summer in its Western Peninsula are four degrees above freezing.

Scary tales of runaway temperature spikes melting 200,000 cubic miles of peninsular ice might be expected from Al Gore and James Hansen. But when Gambian ministers engage in such unscrupulous propaganda, they further degrade the health and welfare of their people.

Cameroon hosted a “fact-finding” visit from seven senior British Members of Parliament, who declaimed that climate change is “a jinx that threatens humanity more than HIV/AIDS.” They were joined by Cameroon’s Minister of Forestry and Wildlife in urging that forests be managed to increase absorption of planetary carbon dioxide and “reduce global warming.”

Few climate actions, however, come close to the travesty being played out in nearby Chad. There the government has banned the manufacture, importation and use of charcoal – the sole source of fuel for 99% of Chadians.

“Cooking is a fundamental necessity for every household,” its Environment Minister pronounced. But “with climate change every citizen must protect his environment.”

The edict has sent women and children scavenging for dead branches, cow dung, grass and anything else that burns. “People cannot cook,” said human rights activist Merlin Totinon Nguebetan. “Women giving birth cannot even find a bit of charcoal to heat water for washing,” said another.

The government admitted it had failed to prepare the public for its sudden decree, but announced no change in plans – saying only that scarce propane might be an alternative for some. When citizens protested, they were violently dispersed by police.

“We will not give up,” a women’s group leader said. “Better to die swiftly than continue dying slowly.”

So this is where radical climate change alarmism has taken us. When the health of Planet Earth is at stake, human life means little – even if the “disasters” are nothing more than worst-case scenarios conjured up by computer models, headline writers, Hollywood, and professional doomsayers like Gore, Hansen and NOAA alarmist-in-chief Susan Solomon.

“Every time someone dies as a result of floods in Bangladesh, an airline executive should be dragged out of his office and drowned,” British arch-environmentalist George Monbiot lectured readers of The Guardian, in a typically hysteria-laced column.

One has to wonder if he would apply the same standard to eco-colonialist executives who continue to perpetuate poverty, disease, malnutrition and death in the name of preventing “global warming disasters” that fewer and fewer respectable scientists still believe are caused by human greenhouse gas emissions.

It’s time to address Africa’s real problems and replace lethal eco-colonialism with fact-based science and humane public policies.

Better idea:
The next time someone freezes to death or dies in an ice storm Al Gore should be dragged out of his limo and drowned.

Liberals are deranged lunatics...

Killing African children is a pastime for these creeps.

Let's exchange our Liberal fruitcakes with the people of Chad.

ah, the vaunted computer models...
one of the many dirty little secrets of the enviro-nazis is that if you plug known data from years past into their precious programs, they utterly fail to accurately predict what is happening now.

Eco-Colonialism Degrades Africa
I have as much concern for Africa as the President has for his half brother. I know that does not sound very Christian however I do believe that right now the USA has more issues to deal with concerning itself.

The temperature of the planet is regulated by that big ball of hot gasses called the sun as well as volcanic actions taking place at this very moment. As for pollution control I believe we should do our best to not destroy the land, rivers and fields, which will help the legacy being left for those that follow us. However these extreme laws and regulations being placed on companies, and individuals are nothing about saving the planet they are about personal power, money and control. Something the American public seems to be willing to give away - as expressed by this last election putting Obama in the captians chair for the next 1460 days....mark my words he will prove to be one of the most damaging leaders this country has ever had.

Since the end of WWII this country has been subsidizing and spending taxpayer monies so we can get the so called oppressed people of the world on our so called side. What have we learned, nothing! These folks we help still hate us , so I say let the Russains, Arabs, Chinese help them and they will find out eventyually they will be hated as well.

I am tired of the legislators in this country spending money (taxpayers) on un-appreciative folks, as well as setting themselves up at the expense of the average American citizen, let them have their will and accept the consiquenses of their choices.

Lets also quit fooling ourselves - there is no such thing as a Liberal - they are Marxists and want to destroy what many have died for trying to keep from happening here in this country.

The Gaia Executioners
It's time not to mince words any more. These "environmentalists" are just killers. There is no difference between them and the Aztecs who sacrificed thousands to assuage the Sun God. Modern Global Warming fanatics want to withhold technology from the struggling Africans out of some insane, illogical worship of Gaia. The result is the same: Suffering and death for millions. Surely there must be a special place in H@ll for these monsters.

This is the soft racism
of environmental elitism.

Africa's doom by Paul D...
Thanks for this great article, describing what has not happened to Africa since kicking out the Imperialists of Europe, by describing what has happened since the 1960's. Perhaps now, Europeans can be ashamed of both...amazing!! Socialism and communism at work while so-called capitalists stand by and observe; liberals at work saving the poor souls...to die that is...sad!! Perhaps, now one of their color will do something to give "change and Hope" to Africa as well.

The terrorism of the Left
If there's one lesson we've failed to learn it's that incalculable damage is often done by people who have the best of intentions. If only we could agree to judge people by their results...and not give them a pass because "their hearts were in the right place".

I read an article recently that said the banning of DDT resulted in literally millions of deaths world-wide. The article concluded that the dangers of DDT were far exaggerated and if used properly, DDT is a highly effective tool to fight malaria carrying mosquitos.

Perhaps the DDT ban was the first example of
eco-extremists using fear-mongering. And I'm convinced that for many of these eco-nuts the issue of the day is secondary to their blind ambition and huge egos.

My Thoughts
Im thinking it is possible that there could be a thing called Global Warming. Some of it caused by natural means and some of it caused by mankind. I do believe we have a reponsibility to care for all aspects of life even the enviroment. There is a line that has to be drawn between sound scientific ways to save the enviroment as opposed to hair-brained ideas to do the same. Ya kinda wonder how many of these enviromental types would be willing to live the same way that they propose that others should be living.

ECO-TERRORISM

.....Can be divided into two groups:

...1. The cultist Earth worshippers (Sierra Club - Green Peace etc) who see mankind as the defiler of their precious Earth and impede all scientific progress to improve man's standard of living ...

...2. The scam artists (Al Gore - U.N.) who see a way to extract money from wealthy nations and big business to enrich and empower themselves ...

.....Both are harmful to mankind and should be resisted and opposed ...go UNGREEN ...shoot an eco-nut .....COLOSSUS

Even if
Global Warming predictions are accurate, it doesn't make the top 10 list of Africa's pressing problems. It isn't Africa's subsistence farming that has generated the bulk of the man-made CO2 in the atmosphere and trying to address it by holding Africa in poverty is profoundly hypocritical. Anyone who truly believes the solution to global warming is living without electricity or efficient transportation should lead by example.

Foriegn Aid
Is justifiable on security grounds. If Somalia hadn't broken into a dozen pieces it wouldn't be a haven for terrorists and pirates now. The problem with our foriegn aid in the past is that it hasn't been aimed at securing prosperity and stability for the recipients, but as bribes to get their governments to do what we want, or a way to dump our excess farm production (which undercuts the local farmers we're supposedly trying to help). It's no wonder they don't appreciate our help, it has always come with strings attached and often only succeeded in enriching kleptocratic political figures. We can do better than that...lately we have been doing a little better, and there are regions in Africa where people are naming their sons George after our last president. If the aid is effective, reaches the ground, and helps them make economic progress so they will be able to lift themselves up, it will be appreciated.

It might be nice if their farmers didn't have to compete with the subsidized low prices of American and European crops, too.

Eco-Colonialism Degrades Africa
Being an ex-colonial in my childhood I can say that it's futile to try to help people who do not really want to be helped in the aggregate. In my opinion, it is wrongheaded to impose our standards on populations unwilling to modify their behaviors in order to make the changes proposed to be implemented and, most importantly, sustained. Unfortunately, it's a waste of time and resources. Our own Nation is in dire straights right now due to wrong thinking and unsavory behaviors by some so now is definitely not the time to bleed even more resources to a lost cause. When Africa is truly ready they'll have to do their own heavy lifting and we in the West can give them a helping hand but not welfare.

Black Problems Always Caused by Whites
Are African (and Haitian) problems always caused by whites? It is a strange form of narcissistic "racism" that so many liberals and neocons assume that if whites "allow" god-awful problems to exist in the Third World, any such problems are the fault of whites--as if we white people are so wonderful and God-like that we can and should fix every problem around the world--and conversely that Third World peoples are like hapless dimwitted children. We hear this logic all the time from apologists on flood-level legal and illegal migration into the United States. Apparently people in other nations are utterly incapable of staying inside their own nations and fixing their own problems. They must come and be touched by the shimmering magic of our glowing greatness! (Meantime we get cheap labor, overflowing classrooms and emergency rooms and lots and lots of PC credits.)

Border Enforcement + Immigration Moratorium = Job & Eco Sanity

Is this Darwinism in action?
Is this the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life?

overpopulation is the problem

As set forth, sub-Saharan Africa is a very sad place, and the farther the US stays away, the better. When the world's population was three billion, that was, quite rightly, considered an imminent crisis. With population past six million, and little being done about it (and, as this piece speels out, blame being affixed in all the wrong directions), the US should just let nature take its course.

overpopulation is the big problem

As set forth, sub-Saharan Africa is a very sad place, and the farther the US stays away, the better. When the world's population was three billion, that was, quite rightly, considered an imminent crisis. With population past six million, and little being done about it (and, as this piece speels out, blame being affixed in all the wrong directions), the US should just let nature take its course.

EnvironMENTALists . . .
are complicit in the deaths of millions of Africans by their prohibition on the use of DDT. It's funny how these "bunny hugging algore type wackos" have so much influence on government policy.
I propose a hunting season and no bag limit on environMENTALists and their "fellow travelers", birkenstock wearing trolls, et. al." (communists, liberals socialists--same thing--right) The aim is not to eliminate them, but to move them to Africa so they can see what a DDT or charcoal ban looks like.

Time to Get out of the USSA?
Maybe if all of the freedom loving people in the United States just up and emigrated to Africa, taking all of their money with them, and leaving behind all of the slothful, crooked demagogue loving idiots we could turn that continent around. Let the Gorites die off and then return here after finishing the job of making African nations at the very least self-sufficient.

Henry
"Is this Darwinism in action?
Is this the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life? "
Well of course, henry. You DID notice that the Favoured Races are not breeding as much as they should and therefore would become a small minority if Al Gore et al didn't see it coming and took action to prevent "overpopulation" by the ...ahem..non-favoured races.

money talks...
The eco-colonialists have learned what it takes to operate in the third world: bribery. African authorities, most of whom are kleptocrats to the core, respond well to bribery. As long as those bulging, unmarked envelopes keep crossing their desks, every favor is possible, from expedited drivers licenses to pronouncements on global warming.

What the charcoal people in Chad (the producers, sellers and consumers) need to do is organize. Get a representative to wine and dine the Environment Minister, slip him some serious dough, and see how fast he changes his tune. Of course, the other government ministers will want their share too, so it's gonna take a steady stream of dash-- hopefully more than the financiers of eco-colonialism can come up with.

Unless the financiers are the Rainforest Action Network, Greenpeace, and the Sierra Club. Oops, never mind.

An aside
While helping a student with economics in an inner city high school this past week, I came across an interesting question. The lesson was on marginal costs versus marginal benefits and even though the student grasped the difference in previous questions, when this question was considered, old attitudes surfaced.

The question asked if there should be a limit on how much should be invested in pollution control and cleanup. Of course the student believed that cleanup should be complete.

I talked about the use of DDT versus the tragedy of Malaria in Africa with the student but this article would be great as well. School is off for a week now or I would be printing it and forwarding it to the teacher.

Narsissism
These no nothing, do nothing self absorbed enviro wackos and others of their ilk should be put on trial and executed for the death of millions because their respective idiocy.

For MMaddox
How about instead of DROWNING Boreacle, we coat him with melted Tenderflake and use HIM to give heat "philantrophically" to others (of course, by igniting him for the purpose)?

Real deaths don't bother greenies
It's amazing to watch eco-nuts studiously ignore real bodies of millions dying in the present thanks to poisonous green policies, while they express great concern for theoretic harm to theoretic people in the future based on theoretic models.

Earth to greenies. People are dying and otherwise suffering NOW in the millions, thanks to your asinine misapplied policies.

Why do REAL deaths lack the power to move you while you obsess about imaginary future deaths?

The only possible answer is that you don't care about deaths unless they can advance your agenda of taking power and control. The hypothetical deaths are useful in this regard. Stopping the real deaths you are causing would require reversing your personal gains in power, money and control.

Radical environmentalists are the new genocidists while posing as humanitarians.

Regarding Global Warming and CO2
I would like to remind those who fear climate change supposedly caused by CO2 to take note of all the CO2 producing snow plows and blowers that their much vaunted "cooling" necessitates in order to clear vast numbers of parking lots and runways, city streets and alleys, rural roads, highways and interstates.

I would also ask them to take note of how much more CO2 their furnace will produce with plunging temperatures that accompany said snow. We are supposed to get down to 12 tonight. That means I have to heat 56 degrees to reach 68.

If CO2 is a problem, they should be praying for global warming.

Global Warming
This article is enlightening, and represents the dangerous and terrifying TRUTH about giving power to zealots and fanatics.

Liberal policies, not eco-terrorism
US governments have freely distributed billions of dollars to dictators in Africa that went into their Swiss bank accounts while their people starved to death and their countries' infrastructures continued to deteriorate. African leaders still tell their people that AIDS doesn't exist and they don't need to worry while the population is dessimated by the disease. If Africans need help, perhaps we should send more billions of financial aid to the African leaders. Where does slavery still exist, Hmmmm? Africa? Don't blame AMERICA when you see the misery of Africans. Blame the fat cat African leaders that sit in the UN and slam America while their own people starve. Al Gore and his global hoax is another problem, not related to people starving while their leaders dine on steak and lobster in their palaces.

Ms R. Carson must be proud??
I do believe in Global Warming, also Global Cooling, and all that in Between.. When I was a Kid in the 40s wadin snow to my butt to get to the school bus and almost burnin alive on the hay stack in August we called that SEASONAL..
Rachel Carson's 'Silent Spring' did in fact spark the DDT bans as far as I know.. Ms Carson was very concerned about Peregrine Falcon
eggs among other things but apparently not with Mosquitoes in SubSahara Africa. My 1st Cousins Churches drilled MANY wells to little avail. CU

Africa is a money pit.
No amount of money sent to Africa will end it's people's suffering. It is insanity to continue to send money and expect a different result than the last time we sent money. Waste, murder, corruption and greed. There has never been an indigenoius government which has actually cared for it's people. Some blacks in South Africa believe they were better of under aparthied.

On top of this, the eco-nuts have placed the burden the faux science of Global Warming. Shame on them.
