No Permanent Majorities in America

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

As we approach the change from a Republican to a Democratic administration, I have been thinking about the differences in the basic character of our two historic parties -- the oldest and third oldest free political parties in the world (number two, at least by my count, is the British Conservative Party).

Democrats are now hoping that their party can achieve something like permanent majority status. They can take heart that their presidential candidate won by a wider margin and their party has larger congressional majorities than the Republicans had when they entertained similar hopes four years ago. But there is reason for caution, and not just because the Republicans fell so far short. And the reason lies in the difference in the basic character of the parties.

The Republican Party throughout our history has been a party whose core constituency has been those who are considered, by themselves and by others, to be typical Americans. In the 19th century, that meant white Northern Protestants. Today, it means white married Christians. Yet such people, however typical, have never made up a majority in our culturally and regionally diverse nation.

The Republican core constituency tends to be cohesive and coherent (though sometimes, like now, quarrelsome). But it has almost never been by itself enough to win. As some Democrats like to remind you, Republicans have lost the popular vote for president in four of the last five elections.

The Democratic Party throughout our history has been the party whose core constituencies have been those who are considered, by themselves and by others, to be something other than typical Americans. In the 19th century, that meant white Southerners and big city Catholics. Today, it means blacks and singles and seculars and those with postgraduate degrees. Such people, while atypical, potentially make up a majority. But they often do not have a lot in common -- and when they have differences over highly visible political issues, they are hard to hold together.

As some Republicans like to remind you, Democrats have lost seven of the 11 presidential elections since their landslide victory in 1964.

Partisan enthusiasts look forward to their side achieving lasting majority status. Others might take counsel from the political scientist David Mayhew, who casts doubt on whether permanent or long-lasting majorities are possible. When you look closely at the supposedly permanent partisan majorities of the past, they fade from view.

Republicans won all but two presidential elections from 1860 to 1892. But Democrats won majorities in the House for most of that period after the Southern states were readmitted to the Union. Republicans won all but two presidential elections from 1896 to 1928. And they held congressional majorities for most of that time, as well. Yet they won almost nowhere in the South, and at the time their dominance was by no means taken for granted.

And what of the New Deal Democratic majority from 1932 to 1968? New Deal Democrats took a hit in the off-year elections of 1938, and polling suggests the Republicans would have won in 1940 if domestic issues had been paramount. Instead, voters re-elected Franklin Roosevelt as a wartime president in 1940 and 1944.

Harry Truman, too, benefited from a foreign issue -- the successful Berlin airlift -- in 1948, and John F. Kennedy campaigned in 1960 as the most determined of Cold Warriors. The Democrats held Congress during almost all this period. But as liberal historians note mournfully, liberal Democrats had effective majorities for only a couple of years from the 1930s to the 1960s.

All of which suggests to me that the more natural state of partisan politics, in this country at least, is something less like party dominance and more like uneasy equilibrium. Equilibrium that swings to one side or another from time to time, as it has swung in varying measure to Democrats in 1992 and 2008 and to Republicans in 1994 and 2004.

Because of their basic character, both parties have difficult tasks in assembling and holding together majorities -- Republicans, because their core constituency is off-putting to those whom it defines as something other than typical Americans; Democrats, because of the difficult of holding together what is usually a very diverse and conflict-prone coalition.

Barack Obama now has that task. He has shown unusual skills and the capacity and willingness to stress what he has in common with those on the other side of the partisan divide. But already rents are appearing in the Democratic fabric -- over Rod Blagojevich, same-sex marriage and the unions' card check bill. My guess is that Obama will hold his majority together for a good long while, but not forever.

It's not permanent,
but it will be 20 years before you see a republican in the white house.

http://zfacts.com/p/318.html

It's at least 12 years.....
BHO - uses Biden to beat mcCain in 2008, He uses Hillary to beat whoever will run in 2012. Hillary uses the 'republicans can't be trusted again' card and gender card to win in 2016. She runs again but loses. Why? It takes 12 years for single digit voters (mainly democrat leaning voters) to figure out the 'change they can believe in' has left them poorer and needy and without any hope for the next 12 generations. And that welfare, even when disguised as 'universal healthcare' means lower quality of care and that nobody can be held responsible for the failed health practises conducted by government hospitals/doctors.

Thanks for the very interesting article.
I appreciate the insightful analysis. Your ability to probe behind the headlines is very refreshing and much needed. Thanks.

Historians...
... are full of theories as to why & how the two-party system functions so well here. It won't disappear any time soon -- certainly not in the next four years.
My guess is that Obama's majority, as Barone phrases it, is already slipping away, and that he'll spend the next four year's trying to put Humpty-Dumpty back together again. I don't think he has a clue as to how he got so lucky, and once the country takes a measure of him, he'll be a running fool.

Federalists and Whigs
Barone's article fails to cite important historical points (as well as demographic realities). First, post civil war due to restrictions Democrats were a minority party during reconstruction -- but for the same reason they became very unpopular in most of the previous Confederacy.

Beginning in the mid-1960s (in terms of Presidential candidates) Republicans began to appeal to many white Southerners.

Today, for at least 10 years, the Republicans are done. Republicans are only able to obtain about 30 percent of "minority" groups like "Hispanics" and "Asians" coupled with getting 10% of the black vote means that it will be nearly impossible for a Republican to win California, New York -- and soon to be Florida and even Texas. You simply cannot be elected President if you lose all of these states.

It will not change anytime soon -- it may cause the Republican party to go the way of the Federalists, Whigs or perhaps the Liberals in the UK (still a "third party" with a handful of seats).

PREDICTION; LIBERAL'S LAST HURRAH
THE LIBERAL'S HAVE SPENT ALL THEIR TIME AND ENERGY TRYING TO DISTROY BUSH, FOR THE LAST EIGHT YEARS. THEIR CLOSEST ALLIES THE MEDIA ARE DONE. EVEN NOW THEIR FINAL CHAPTER IS BEING WRITTEN. THE ONLY THING THAT CAN PROLONG THEIR EXISTENCE IS THE UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM. READ MORE AT, http://stopthepresses2.blogspot.com/2008/12/stopthepresses -makes-first-prediction.html

Ignorance
Ignorance is the key to the dem strategy.

The results are amazing when you strip the "D" and "R" from political surveys. An extremely large majority of Americans almost always agree with the conservative position, but decide their vote on some type of "American Idol" decision process.

Many Americans are lazy...Repubs need to do much better at stressing and highlighting their differences.

You cannot talk me into accepting....
the new prez for a long time.....and don't even try. And quit talking about conservatives being off-putting. You, yourself, are off-putting, Mr. Barone.

We have to remember that 58.3 million
voted for a Republican last year. That's 46 % in favor of the McCain/Palin ticket despite an unpopular war, the economic meltdown and 8 years of questionable Bush/Cheney leadership. If not for a few strategy errors (like maybe having one) and the very untimely mortgage crisis, the Republicans could have won it!

Pamela, chill out a little
"....[Republicans are] off-putting to those whom it defines as something other than typical Americans;..."

When more of the quote is presented, I think it is a reasonable assertion. I have a number of "old school" Democrat friends, and I think Mr. Barone is simply offering s characterization that would fit them pretty well.

What problem do you have with the statement? Or do you just not like Michael Barone?

46 % boted GOP
Great point. Characteristically Baron was so busy attempting to dazzle with needless detail that he missed the obvious.

46 % in favor
Sorry about the typo

Reality Check
Obama 69,456,897 [52.9%] Electoral vote 365
McCain 59,934,786 [45.7%] 173

Obama carried 28/22 States & D.C. with a combined Electoral impact which is self evident, it wasn't even close.

Study the demographics of the States which, by themselves assure an Electoral College Victory and you will see their "minority" growth assuring a Democratic vote into perpetuity as the entirety of the USA continues to become a Nation comprised of typical Democrat voters.

That's reality, like it or not, all the bleating and blathering we do here won't change it, welcome to the new USA..........

Krugman's Article Yesterday...

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/02/opinion/02krugman.html

...lays out the facts Barone is trying to get at without the partisan sugar-coating Barone offers here. One of Krugman's readers (in the reader responses to his column) gets to the heart of the matter also.

"As Lincoln boldly proclaimed in his Gettysburg Address, "government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." Today's Republican party has failed to understand this simple truth. In a country with a government of the people, believing that government is the problem is the same thing as believing that democracy is the problem. It is the same thing as believing that "We the People" are the problem."

Please Repubs, work with us to find real solutions now that the ones you tried the last 8 years have failed. We need a viable, relevant opposition party so we can have a 2 party system.

46% Voted GOP...

...because the Religious Fundies had no 3rd party to turn to that better represented their interests. If evangelicals and wingnuts had a strong candidate, they would have voted for him/her in droves, even knowing that the split vote would ensure Dem victory. McCain's weak support affirms this.

Dems, on the other hand, were strongly united behind Obama once faced with the alternative, the "fatally flawed" (harsh but true) Hillary.

It's not too hard to predict that happening one or two cycles down the line - hard core conservatives and evangelicals abandoning the Repub Party for their own party and candidate. They for sure aren't going to get anywhere in the foreseeable future with the Party the way it is now, especially if the Repubs lose a few more seats in the Senate in 2 years.

jo
Thinking that "the government will be able to take care of me" is what got us into the current mess we're in.
I see no real difference in the two major parties.
When government advocates personal responsibility (and allows us to make our own decisions) we will be better off, as humans.

Support the Fair Tax

The Two Parties Have Merged
Due to the neocon takeover of the former Republican Party under McCain as standard bearer, the two parties actually have merged into one. The platforms may look different but the end result is the same. It is the Council on Foreign Relations that determines domestic and foreign policy in this country, which is funded by the international bankers. The Fed runs our economic policy and manipulates our economy for their profit. McCain, Obama, Biden, Clinton, Bush, Cheney, Richardson, Geither, Napolitano....they are all members, and are behind the global agenda....and Western Hemisphere initiatives. You really thought there were two parties anymore?

There are. The two new parties are the Global Socialist Party (current Republican and Democratic Parties) and the Sovereign America Party (Constitutionalists and Conservatives).

Get with the program.

#6
BUSH himself is a liberal. A liberal is anyone who interprets the Constitution "liberally," rather than according to the founder's intent and clear language contained within it. If any president was a liberal, it was Bush. He may have "talked the talk" of a Conservative on one or two issues (such as abortion and stem cell research), but his foreign and domestic policies were liberal all the way. Pre-emptive wars are recent GOP beliefs, not the old standard. The Patriot Act was as unpatriotic as you could get in the removal of free speech and Constitutional protections. He was so liberal, he called the Constitution a "damn piece of paper."
Some of these definitions of "conservatism" and "liberalism" truly are amazing, and you really need to pull out your dictionary before using the word conservative in the same sentence as Bush (or McCain for that matter).

46% - 54% is meaningless

46% - 54% is meaningless with all the voter fraud that took place.

Then factor in Media bias.

Then factor in how un-informed the voting population was and you can not interpret the elections with any sort of mandate or rejection.

The result will be more endless Government with no direction leading to no solutions.

Every problem we face today, we will still be facing in 4 years or 8 years.

Remember you heard it here first.

I Beg to Differ
There most definitely is a permanent majority in the USA and it is the "Ignorants". I can only see the "Ignorants" party growing when you consider what we've done to our education system.

America's focus will be here, not abroad
Pretty much agree with Barone on his general point about there not being permanent majorities coalescing around political parties.

I do think a "permanent" majority for the foreseeable future is beginning to emerge as a reaction to the neocon messianic interventionism that characterized the early Bush 43 years.

This new majority is disposed against expending(or squandering)U.S. lives and the U.S. Treasury on campaigns to bring about political changes in either the Muslim or larger world communities.

Many Americans will look at the sorry state of our own infrastructure, our increasingly unaffordable health care system, and demand that IF their tax monies are to be spent at all, such monies be spent here on our own, and not for the benefit of others.

This is not to say Americans won't support our government's, or other institution's, efforts in providing episodic humanitarian relief in the wake of disasters around the world, or help provide food for the starving, but I think we will see an America more focused on matters here at home.

Nor is it to say campaigns already underway(Afghanistan)will be terminated.

But I don't think there is any appetite for future Iraqs, or even for future Afghanistans.

Rather than allegiance to any political party as such, Americans will expect that we spend our resources here at home, on our own needs.

I think a majority may be emerging around that issue.

Party Titles
don't reflect constant value over time. The Democrats of the south were conservative in reflecting smaller gov't, strong defense, personal independence and responsibility and often voted with Republicans on related issues. Republicans have often been liberal by the above mentioned standards in presidents like Nixon and Bush (both). Jack Kennedy was more conservative that either of these Republicans. Lincoln was the original Republican and the first to strip the Constitution of it's meaning. So party values change over time except for one. As poster, ThomasPain, noted above, the fastest growing party and majority in this country is the "Ignorant Party" and they just elected their greatest president.

Our Political Systen Is Illegitimate
America's government is illegitimate and its political system is illegitimate. Instead of political party statistics, why not talk about who runs the political system? The elitists, the lawyers, the judges, the Wall Street finance houses, the liberal fascist billionaires, the corporate-media propagandists? "The people" do nothing but provide a facade of legitimacy. Voting is a sham. You can vote for The Magic Negro or his twin brother - both are totalitarian marxists. America has a permanent majority alright - numbskulls who listen to propaganda, are too stupid to realize they are being sold into slavery by the elitists, and are willing to trade their freedom for short-term comfort. European-American Homeland on the North American Continent.

Jerebaub, TomasPain
Jerebaub
You have to be right about the focus moving to internal politics. Obama voters are more insular and locally focused than McCain voters, and there are obviously more of them. Local focus will increase, except for the simplistic desire to terminate participation in expensive foreign wars and fighting, which is a form of local focus. Moreover, the economic crunch has brought the attention of ALL of us to financial prospects.
TomasPain
I hope you are wrong, although available and current evidence is on your side. Perhaps the Obama school of hard knocks will educate enough folks to produce a new majority.

Krugman - Commie Pathological Liar
The only thing you need to know about Krugman is that every word he speaks or writes is a lie. This government is illegitimate. Opposing it is the most patriotic thing anyone can do. Throwing Krugman's garbage in the dump where it belongs with all the other pro-government propaganda is patriotic.

VOTERS NEEDS WILL CHANGE
The majority of voters decisions are based on their personal needs, not the country's needs.
Therefore, predicting the minds of voters in the future is a futile exercise. A major event, such as a catastrophe occurrence in this country will affect everyone's decision on how they will vote, as it did with the arranged financial collapse one month before the 2008 election. The world is a tinderbox which could explode at any time. When it does all political parties' ideology will change.

jo
You post a pleasant positive post. Always nice to see more light than heat from the left. One thing you have to remember is that this is a conservative, not a Republican site. Conservatives revere the "people" phrases of the Gettysburg Address. The GOP of the Bushes abandoned conservative principles and tried to be Democrat Lite. For example, conservatives are against ALL bailouts. That means Freddie and Fannie and Wall Street and GM. That is because govt for the people does not confiscate the money of successful workers to reward and perpetuate failure and incompetence. Obama represents a continuation and increase in the very policies that have got us into this mess. Kicking the can down the road one more time will just make things worse. Stimulation packages and bailouts are just euphemisms for trying to get out of debt by spending more money on the same things that got you there. You are doubtless quite young and see Obama as a fresh new change. You will be disillusioned almost certainly. Oh well, time will tell. ITM, your positive regard is appreciated here, and i hope you realize i wish you, and all of us, the best of Happy Prosperous New Years.

Two party
There is no two party system. Right now there is socialist and socialist lite. A lot of Republicans use to be Demorats. They change their stripes to get elected.

Americans today have no...
concept of what hardship is. We now have several generations that have been taught that peace and comfort is a right and they do know how to demand their rights.

When we go to bed at night we don't worry about a bomb falling on our house or warring rebels breaking in to kill us for no other reason than to see us dead.

Approximately half the population wants what the other half has and they are willing to empower our leaders to make sure they get it. There will be a redistribution of wealth but it won't be taken from the working rich and given to the working or non-working poor.

It will be taken from the working rich and given to the non-working wealthy making all productive people poorer and totally at the mercy of an all too powerful central government controlled by a few extremely wealthy individuals whose ideology has nothing to do with preserving liberty for the masses.

Indeed people like Peggy the Moocher will soon find out that indeed she will not have to worry about paying her mortgage, her car payment or how much minimum wage is because she will no longer have a home or car to pay for and no job to go to.

Class warfare and minority tyranny are being used to bring Americans to their knees literally, bowing to politicians who have no desire to preserve the liberty of the great unwashed.

Icedog - info, please
Icedog: How about some examples of those positions you refer to here?: "The results are amazing when you strip the "D" and "R" from political surveys. An extremely large majority of Americans almost always agree with the conservative position". Also, what are the typcial, in your view, non-conservative (moderate or liberal/progressive) positions on top issues?

doctorfixit:
Why post such inane wastes of words as these "Subject: Krugman - Commie Pathological Liar The only thing you need to know about Krugman is that every word he speaks or writes is a lie. ". Even Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity hit a truth once in a while. What's your issue with Krugman's article?

The two Party system...BYE BYE
I can't speak for others (but I sure wish I could vote for them) But, I have changed my party affiliation to Independent.

The GOP candidates have become Kennedy-esque democrats
The Democrats have become CPUSA..."socialists in a Hurry"
All in the span of my 48 years.

President Reagan gave us an 8 year break from the relentless downward spiral into socialism.

The Taft-Harley Act of 1947 placed holds on unions, and, it also required that union officers affirm under oath that they weren't communists, and CPUSA's stranglehold on Hollyweird should have ended but it is rearing it's ugly head again.Communist Otto Katz was quoted as saying "Columbus discovered America, but I have discovered Hollywood" it was Herb Sorrell vs. Ronald Reagan in the bunkers then.

Now it's PEBO, who's affiliations with F.M.Davies, Saul Alinski, Odinga, et.al

It's left me searching for a 3rd party that will defend the Constitution as written...(sorry folks documents aren't living)and will to a great measure Stand Up, Close The Borders,Get the UN off our shores,Repeal many of the bogus unconstitutional laws on the books and live up to the Oaths they "pledge" when they take office in the same way the 56 men who signed the Declaration Of Independence did.
"With a firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor."
Too much to hope for..no..after the incoming administration is through disecting the Constitution...I don't think so.

No Longer Proud Of My Country
How does any intelligent person take pride in a country that is controlled by a poliical news media that only tells half truths?

If i came from a communist country looking for freedom in today's America I might as well go home.

The American news media is divided on what is truth..which can only mean that they decide what is truth depending on their political leanings.

It sickens me to realize that the majority of Americans would put a person in office that owes his career to a biased media.

Dem Party a witches brew
Yes, the Dems are a coalition party made up of small groups that don't always like each other: big labor, blacks, gays, femminists, environmentalists, etc. And the glue that holds this mess together is Identity Politics which encourages each "group" to see themselves as victims. And of course, a victim must have an oppressor...and that's the white male. Once they've eventually marginalized white males, then the aforementioned groups will start destroying each other as they fight for a larger piece of the pie.

This is the balkanization of america and I can't see any positive outcome.

Exception

My county is 160 years old. In all that time, no democrat has ever held local office. Maybe that's because no democrat ever ran for local office. In the 11/4/08 election, the countys' precincts went for McCain/Palin anywhere from 65 to 90 percent.

If you got any excess democrats anywhere, send 'em down and we'll neutralize 'em. (Just kidding, of course)

The World Will Change
Thinking the Dems will hold on is funny. If we were starting from scratch it might be a good bet but we are on the verge of a budget fiasco. What will happen with our money will ruin a lot of lives and make the Dems look like idiots. It won't take a lot of time either which does not bode well for them in 2010.

As to Obama and a second term with the misery created by the mismanagement of our finances he will not be popular in 2012. The Republicans can be counted on to run a genius like McCain which will drag down their chances but Obama will have an ace in the hole. He knows the nation hates to make a change during war (as Barone pointed out concerning FDR) so he will make sure we are in a conflict somewhere.

FDR set us up for entry into WWII by putting the fleet in Pearl and painting bullseyes on a bunch of battlewagons. Do you think Obama is above doing the same?

Then again Mr. O could just suspend the Constitution. A whole lot of people would support him in that. Then it would get REALLY interesting.

response to jo
Jo you called on repubs to work with you on solutions, we will be glad to work with you om solutions to restoring a legitimate constitutional government. Please read the Constitution and show me where in there what your party fights for is authorized. The plain, simple truth is that the Democrat party is responsible for deceiving the American people as to what the government is lawfully allowed to do. As for you Mr. Barone, what is the point of this article? That we should just accept things as they are? I offer to you also the challenge of showing me in the Constitution where what the majority of office holders and office seekers(I include many Republicans), run on and vote for. Please read carefully Article 1, Section 8.

Michael - If there are "No permanent
majorities in America". It is strictly by design! Only fools don't see that Democrats and Republicans are merely two wings of the same bird - flying in the wrong direction. Sorry to borrow the pun...but it fits!

We the dumbed down, spoiled, naive electorate have allowed ourselves to be balkanized, marginalized and categorized into differing groups that are whipped into frenzy every couple of years perpetuating the illusion of democracy. No one in either party gets elected..they get permission from their puppetmasters. Research vote-fraud!

Real bipartismanship will have occurred when the glasses are removed and millions of taxpayers stop filing an income tax form and demand the end to the Federal Reserve, which is robbing us of everything we have worked for during our entire lives.

Politicians defy their pledges daily. Perhaps a voter pledge to do what I just described will bring sanity, and unity back to the electorate.

Farmers Wife
You often speak for me and your 7:53 post did again. It was the young, naive, poor and those with no memory or sense of history that elected Obama. Few have any experience of hardship, or the futility of trying to spend yourself rich. Its sad, but not totally unjust that these are the people that will suffer most if Obama continues our slide into socialism. There are no raises, or promotions or social upward mobility connected to welfare payments. It its impossible to punish the rich--they just leave and take their bucks with them. The educated worker bee middle class will break even. The unskilled folks living hand to mouth, their jobs threatened by illegal immigrants who will work for less than minimum wage, the poor who can not manuever to deal with inflation--these are the folks who will take the brunt of Obamaism.

I see it like JohnR22.
The strange fractions that the Democratic party is comprised of will not long hold, once the white man can no longer be blamed for all that ails. After hope and change does its damage the country will be ready to change back, but alas Pandora's Box cannot be closed. The Democrats would probably like to establish totalitarian rule, but anarchy is the more likely resuslt.

"We The People" are the problem!!

"We The People" are Congress' Oversight Committee, and we've NOT done our job!

First of all, it's supposed to be "Public Service" NOT "Public Career."

But what does Congress' Oversight Committee do? We keep voting the same scumbags into office, time after time after time. The Republicans seem partial to wimps, and the dems are partial to criminals and sexual deviants.

Every time I hear "So and so has dedicated 30+ years to public service..." I want to spit!!!

That's NOT about "public service," it's about "control" and living quite nicely on OUR EARNED tax dollars.

(Such as Pelosi's jet that costs $22,000 a freakin' HOUR to operate, and Congress voting THEMELVES raises when more people are unemployed than in the past 30+ years!)

And oh yeah, about those Obama election numbers? Those Obama voter who...

Agreed with Obama's idea on restricting stem cell research.

Agreed with Obama about staying in Iraq until the job is done.

Agreed with Obama being in FAVOR of pro-life.

And, my own personal favorite, had no problem with Palin being Obama's VP.

Congress had the LOWEST approval rating in history, lower than Pres. Bush, and what do we do? WE not only vote them BACK into office, we MORE of them into office.

And the very same people who, for the past 8yrs. have screeched about the money Pres. Bush has spent (and btw, aren't educated enough to know that Bush can't spend a dime WITHOUT Congress' APPROVAL) seem to have no problem with the SPENDING Obama has promised he'll do... And spending that, by comparison, will make Bush look like the biggest tight-wad, penny-pinching pres. in history.

I guess the question is, are "We The People" THAT stupid, or..... ??????

Oh, so many to thank
Thank you Betsy Ross.
Thank you drfixit.
Thank you tomaspain.

What we have, between these two parties any more, is the choice between socialist heavy and socialist light. Conservatives no longer have much of a voice. Neither party seems to grasp (or worse care) that the federal government no longer uses the constitution, the foundation law as a guideline in the laws they pass, as can plainly be seen by the number of blatantly unconstitutional programs in place.

The people don't or won't grasp this due to the warped education they've received at the hands of the N.E.A. who's stated purpose is to create an endless stream of mindless drones.

I always shudder when I hear the term 'interpretation' because I know I'm about to hear pure conjecture vaguely based on facts warped to reach a predetermined conclusion.

Re: No Majorities??
Look, there is a rising majority in this country and that is the person who is not very educated on the facts and issues in the country!
And the real permanent almost extint majority is the guy who pays his taxes and has a job and goes to work and follows the law!! This the almost extint permanent majority in this country!!!!

The Dems have a diabolical plan
to "merge" everyone's IRA with the pathetic Social Security system. In other words, they plan to simply TAKE 8 trillion dollars of hard earned money from Americans, in order to fund their bailouts and infrastructure projects. This will not sit well with those whose money has been stolen. If they go through with this insane plan, I see a return of the Republican Party to power. [As usual, the Republicans are called in to clean up the Democratic mess.] By the way, I've already closed my IRA and moved my money elsewhere.

George Corley Wallace,
the late governor of the state of Alabama said it best. "There isn't a dime's worth of difference between the Democrats and Republicans." I believe he said that in either 1966 or 68.

LMAO
Core differences, what a laugh, both parties are Socialist. The only differences are those of minor degrees. The Democrats to their dubious credit, are openly socialistic posing as "progressives", the Republicans are rationalistic deceivers who's true colors were shown in October 2008 with the grand bail out of their Wall Street masters. You say, it is the "will of the people", first of all this nation was founded as a REPUBLIC not a "democracy". Then adding insult to injury the vast majority who contacted congress resoundingly said NO making a lie out of the claim of such a "democracy" when they went ahead and passed the bailout anyway.

A plague on both of you.

Nobody thought this was 4ever either
Oct 24,1929...Crash..the beginning

The crash that caused this nation to flounder like a salmon on land also began the sorry state of affairs we have now. Pretty broad statement, I know however....
A short time before the crash Hoover was telling everyone the economy was fundamentally sound (Remember Frank and Dodd saying the same thing)
Unemployment skyrocketed, banks failed, automakers shut down because no one could afford new cars.
Unemployed started jumping trains to look for work elsewhere Shantytowns were named "Hoovervilles" and we got Smoot-Hawley, raising tarrifs..Hoovers worst mistake.

FDR wins and pledged to the country a NEW DEAL (raw deal, are better
words)substitute.Hope/change)

FDR called Hoover a big spender (laughable charges in reflection)

FDR in his first 100 days passed a cornucopia of Laws. 15 to be exact, so fast congress hadn't completely read them but signed them anyway (some were later reversed as unconstitutional)
The Emergency Banking Act,The National Industrial Recovery Act,The Civilian Conservation Corp, Emergency Relief,Agricultural Adjustment Act, Emergency Farm Mortgage,Tennessee Valley Authority, Truth In Securities,Homeowners Loan Corp,Glass-Stegall Banking Act and Farm Credit Act. UH HUH...look at what's going on today...didn't work then huh

He gave us his "brain trust" He took us off the gold standard. He had asked for and received broad executive power,
Thus began his alphabet soup (hobo stew) of agencies. (Which we're paying for today.)
The SEC...uh-huh
The FCC...um-huh
the WPA ...
The PWA...public works..un-huh

Then the minority congress (GOP) couldn't do squat to prevent it...

Well folks..here we go again..Pie in the sky promises but a deep plunge as the new majority grows government as the socialist elect has promised.

No Democrat Party
The Republican party could well be called the Democrat Party and the Democrat Party named the Ant American Party thus eleiminating the Democrat Party as it used to be as well as the conservative party.

The role of money
Obama did it the old fashion way....with massive amounts of money he obtained through foreign (illegal) donations along with other domestic donations from voters who exceeded the donar amount allowed under the law. This wil never be investigated but it is very clear from his committees limited reporting of donations which their on-line system allowed and their failure to weed out curious donations to Mckey Mouse etc with curious amounts reflecting the translation of foreign funds into US funds were all clear even to a casual observer.

Given that the average voter is uninformed, TV soundbites and 1/2 hour infomercials do the job when delivered en masse.

Pistol...
You often say what I am thinking too!

Evidently there are enough people with the attitude, "as long as I get mine" that believe any politician really cares about what "they" want.

Politicians wholeheartedly embrace the newest most popular group at any given moment and casually throw the group that was in favor yesterday under the proverbial bus.

There is an advocacy group for every "special interest" there is, except the taxpayer, which by the way will soon become the fastest disappearing group in America.

The only message that could possibly get the undivided attention of politicians would be hitting them in the head with a proverbial 2x4 in the form of a taxpayer revolt. Stop showing them the money!

Ropati is correct. Politicians see the Trillions of dollars in IRAs and 401Ks and they are literally drooling at the mouth to get their hands on it!

Permanent Majorities
The Democratic and the Republican Parties are equally reprobate . . . God-haters. Thus, the two together comprise the permanent majority. Neither party, today, is what the Founding Fathers had in mind as the epitome of government leadership.

Thankfully, I found the Constitution Party, http://www.constitutionparty.com. I pray that our nation can survive liberal government, and am delighted to see more and more members of the Constitution Party elected to an office in each election cycle.

I am not a Republican
I am a conservative.
I am not off put by people that are different.
I am off put by people that are incorrect and therefore harmful to liberty.

Most of the Democrats voting now are looking for a handout from the Federal government. That is how you should group them. They are a majority that believe stealing is righteous when it it performed by a majority.

They are incorrect.

People that recieve handouts from the government should at that time forfeit the right to vote. It is the only ethical thing to do. Our forefathers did not forsee leaches in our country.

the American Dream...
we all have our own personal American Dream. For the most part we all want a home and enough money to provide for our needs and at least some of our wants.

The problem is that half of us believe that government can and will insure the fruition of the dream and the other half knows better.

We are giving government the rope to hang us with AND it isn't even a new rope, insuring that the demise of liberty be slow enough to be very painful.

The only difference in Republican and Democrat politicians is their alphabetical preference, R or D, after their name.

Re: kick the can down the road..is another way of describing insanity isn't it?
Everyone gives Bush credit for keeping us safe from attack since 9-11, but can we really say that when he refused to do anything about the illegal invaders and our borders, especially the southern one where anarchy seems to rule.
It's pretty bad when the man sworn to defend us refuses to do so and puts our fellow Americans living amid that chaos in danger. And then refuses to pardon two innocent men for doing their duty. I voted twice for him and like
McCain he was never mine or my husbands first choice but like most of us we thought he would do what was best for the country rather than algore or lurch. He showed us his true colors after 2004 and now our grandchildren will be paying, paying paying.

good column
Barone has the dynamic correct. The problem for the Republicans is that they define themselves in a way that excludes most of the country. The problem for the dems is that their coalition is not cohesive as the blacks vs gays on gay marriage reflects. With the Republicans in power for 8 years the problem for the Republicans became the dominant dynamic. But with the dems in power it becomes a problem for them to keep their various groups supportive. Fortunately it appears they can count on Republicans to help them. Working class Michigan and Ohio voters might have been a problem, but the Republicans have made that not so difficult a task, as one example.

Response to E.D.
E.D. for myself I am giving the GOP til 2010 to offer candidates who will legitimately abide by the Constitution, or I will be joining you, and I would recommend, no highly encourage all those who are faith oriented to do the same. For others who are not spiritually oriented I say join the Libertarian Party. I think that if this happens en masse we will have two legitimate forces that can push back the tide power hungry politicians who either don't care what the Constitution says or just have not honestly, carefully read it. To those who read this, please don't think that the Republican party as it now stands, will give us what we want, be ready to dynamically shift the balance by leaving it behind to die, again, if they choose to stay in the mode they are. We must not be tied to them, we get them in, and they swear to uphold the Constitution, but instead violate it.

No Permanent Majority?
The democrats are itching to give amnesty to all the riff-raff, scofflaw, illegal aliens in the country knowing that they will be a source of votes for generations to come. And with that demographics bent on a minimum of four kids per family, it will become a majority quickly, a majority that have a strong socialistic mindset, a propensity for the handout, and a desire not to integrate or embrace the ways of the adopted nation but to foist their culture and third world mentality on others.

There does seem to be a permanent
majority - the idiots we hire as school teachers who continue to dumb down the students so that they have now knowledge of history and economics. Until we get rid of the liberals in the so-called "education" camps, er, schools, we will have and endless succession of brainwashing.

First, repeal the "progressive" 17th Amendment and go back to state selection of senators.

Put term limits on both houses of the Congress - eight years max. Don't tell me we can't find more qualified people.

Reduce the campaign time for both primaries and general elections, and campaign spending severely.

Put term limits on judges - 10 years and then go back to work.

Kill all of the unconstitutional alphabet agencies.

=============

On the other hand, we could just limit the vote to property owners.

To the issue
The fact that there are no permanent majorities is a blessing. Republicans held control and rapdly demonstrated they were inept. Democrats are already making a similar demonstration but have not yet ascended to the throne of supremacy. Would anyone want one party to rule for many many years? Dissension between parties seems to be the only mechanism to arrive at some will of the people.

Economic illiteracy
"Laissez-faire Capitalism leads to recession/depressions"

Anybody who thinks that we ever have/had this hasn't tried to run a business! What a joke.

to rdk
Will of the people? So if the "will" of the people is to violate my rights, that's okay? If the will of the people is Communism, that's okay? If the "will" of the people is oppressive Islamic faith, that's okay? No, as the Declaration of Independence states I have and we all have Unalienable, God given rights and the Constitution gives the form of the Government that is to protect them. So even a majority of the people wnating to take my money for their agenda is WRONG, and no politician has the right ignore the Constitution in subverting or subsuming this government to do that. Have you actually ever read the Constitution? If so, show me in there where what we have today is legal. If it is not legal then it is only done through might, and if that's the case then whoever has the might gets to do WHATEVER they want. Think about it.

Republicans are doomed
Blacks & Hispanics made up almost a 1/3 of the electorate in 08. They gave the dems 80% of that vote. If this holds, dems will only need to get around 20% of the remainder of voters in future elections to win.

As the Hispanic population increases through births and immigration, and whites continue to have fewer children, this number will only get bigger. The dems will introduce these emerging voters to the "joys of the welfare state", helping to create a permanent underclass much like the blacks, this will serve to solidify their allegiance to the democratic party. Facts are facts. As the hispanic illegitimacy rates continue to soar (over 50% and growing), these folks will naturally vote democratic simply because they will get more from the system than they pay in.

This will happen slowly but surely. As the wise man once said, civilization will not end in a bang but a wimper. I, for one am glad i will not be around to witness it.

the dims strategy paid off
by waging as class and race campaign the dims/libs/leftists finally got the president they have been drooling for these many years while they have grown their entitlement plantation.

With his $4.5 billion in new promised spending for every group that sees itself as either a victi, or entitled to take tax dollars for their cause, the messiah is the dim equivilent of a hopeful 8 year orgasm of handouts.

But just as the repubs under bush over reached with their spending, the dims under the mentally challenged pelousy and land deal reid will do the same thing.

The dims cried about deficits but grew it by $2.5 trillion during the last 2 years they controlled congress. Economists are forecating annual deficits exceeding $1 trillion per year every year the messiah is in office.

Prior to the last election the average dim while holding congress to a very low approval rating still believed the repubs controlled both the house and senate.

Buty pelousy and reid failed to show any leadership and must be held accountable for their continued failure for the next voting cycles.

Deficits are only a problem when a repub is in the white house is the dim mantra. That both the dims in congress and the new messiah are clueless about the economy and the capitalism that drives the economy will be seen over the next 2-4 years

Governor Blagojevich evidently...
made the mistake of believing that because he was a "good" Illinois Democrat that he could exploit Obama's Senate seat without repercussions.

He must be reeling from the realization that his own party is throwing him under the bus. After all he hasn't done anything that any other Chicago political machine Democrat (including Obama) hasn't or wouldn't have done under the same circumstances.

Of course we need to remember that the previous two (one Dem and one Rep) governors of Illinois are "jail birds".

It's What's On The Inside That Counts
Republicans shunned minorities for the majority of years and didn't welcome them into the party which is a fact, so they remained for the most part democratic which is okay, but what isn't fine, is that they don't understand the difference between the democrats and the now far left socialists who are taking over Washington D.C. and who don't have anyone's best interest in mind except their own personal agendas and redistributing the wealth to their wealthy friends, gays who supported those at the top get elected who will get privileges and bailout money; Planned Parenthood who made $114,000,000 in profits by using taxpayers money and asking for millions more in bailout money and support the liberals; and so forth....It's like musicial chairs as they move to different offices with different titles and pass the crown and our money around! Perhaps, the Republicans will close the borders and welcome all Americans aboard so we can save our country in 2012.

Morality
The Republican Party was once dominated by the;Moral Majority. The Democrat Party has been, but now more than ever are dominated,by the;Immoral Majority.Examples;Any kind of obortions, paid for with tax payers money.Same sex marriages, whitch may include a woman marrying a broom,or a cowboy marring his horse,in fact any kind of a releship wil be considered to be marriage. The probition of any prayers or reading of God's Word in public and for that matter even in private, except for photo-ops.Taking over all public schools, colleges and universities to teach all kinds of perversions and sexual diviations.Tolerant of all religeons except Christianity. This is just the short list of the examples the immoral majority are, and will be promoting now that they are in power.

What's funny is PEBO is gonna:
He's using President Lincoln's Bible
He's said he's been reading up on Lincoln

If he actually read Lincolns writing he'd find they're polar opposites. How can the MSM/liberals compare this:

During this political season let's be reminded of these wise words. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves."

"Our forefathers did not forsee leaches in our country."

Quite the contrary, our Fore Fathers did forsee leaches in our country. They gave us a representative republic to disallow a "majority/mob rule", and knowing at some point even that would become overcome, they gave us the 2nd amendment.

Rose, I must disagree that...
Republicans shunned minorities. They weren't shunned, they just weren't catered to. The Dems didn't mind appearing to cater to them because they don't mind enslaving people to just enough "teet" to insure their loyal vote.

Republicans, thinking that common sense would prevail, mistakenly didn't promote the message of self empowerment through liberty.

Common sense didn't prevail and minorities swallowed the Dem message hook, line and sinker and now mistakenly believe that their continued problems and poverty is the fault of Republicans.

EdnaEagle, I was just thinking...
about Obama's newly found resemblance to Lincoln when I read your post. There is about as much resemblance as there is of daylight to dark.

Is it coming to this?
From the Declaration of Independence.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Shunned minorities?
I'm not sure how Republicans shunned minorities.
I'm not a Republican, I am a Conservative, but the only way you could surmise Republicans or Conservatives of shunning any minorities is that in order to become a Conservative, you must first practice self responsibility. You must follows the "Rule of the Land". So, by asking someone to practice self reliance and being lawful is shunning, I guess you're right.

Personally, I go out of my way to help someone that is trying to help themselves. I walk big circles around someone that feels entitled to something from me.

Re-birthing the majority
In truth, I'd be loathe to support a permanent majority in my own party of that of any opposing group.

We never learn from history
The following quotes from Thomas Jefferson
are quite interesting. Until Dems/Repubs learn these lessons, we will continue to repeat the mistakes.

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those
who are willing to work and give to those who would not.
Thomas Jefferson

It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes.
A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.
Thomas Jefferson

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the
government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense
of taking care of them.
Thomas Jefferson

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results
from too much government.
Thomas Jefferson

No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.
Thomas Jefferson

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear
arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
Thomas Jefferson

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of
patriots and tyrants.
Thomas Jefferson

To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which
he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.
Thomas Jefferson

Very Interesting Quote

In light of the present financial crisis, it's interesting to read what Thomas
Jefferson said in 1802:

'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than
standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control
the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and
corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all
property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers
conquered

Rich D.....
....has a great but never-gonna-happen Jeffersonian suggestion: Limit voting only to property owners. That would end the social- parasite vote for good, and create a voting block that has something big to lose if they don't do their homework on election days.

The reality is that the Dems are on a major roll that will last many years until the country goes completely third world. Then they will still be in power because, after all, they will be making new laws and will continue to wipe their backsides with copies of our constitution.

Democratic politicians, being THE government handout kinds and queens, have millions of of shameless sheeple willing to take from the productive and prosperous while making babies they can't possibly provide for. This guarantees a Dem majority until either a revolution or at least, mass rioting.

Then again, the government has shown that it will turn their guns on its citizens. (Ruby Ridge and Waco, to name a couple).

Now to buy me some bling, move my couch out on my front porch, and then paint my house pink or purple. Got to get in practice for the new society.

Btw: Where do I go to sign up for the government freebies? And what corner do I have to go to in order to buy an illegal handgun? These things will take some research.

Majority Problems???
The problem with majority, it is a socialist concept. What is good for the masses or how we should direct the masses or collect the masses collectively.

When Townhall understands liberty, individual liberty in particular-conservatism. Maybe they will then understand the masses is not part of the equation but masses would follow the principle.

So the question is, do Republicans or Democrats understand freedom, liberty or individual liberty in particular? Or shall we keep writing about the masses as if the masses make our choice, instead of principles that should drive our decisions.

Re-birthing the Majority.
In truth, I'd be loathe to support a permanent majority in my own party or that of any opposing group.

CapitalistPig - right on!
Ask the average person who pays the salary of the Treasury Sec'y and what the relationship of the Federal Reserve is to the government.

Rich D try this Quote instead:
The last hope of human liberty in this world rests on us. We ought, for so dear a state,to sacrifice every attachment and every enmity. ...If we move in mass,be it ever so ciruitously, we shall attain our object but if we break into squads, everyone pursuing the path he thinks is most direct, we become an easy conquest to those who can now barley hold us in check. I repeat again. that we ought not schismatize on either men or measures. Principals alone can justify that. If we find our government rushing headlong, like our predecessors into the arms of monarchy..... If we find them violating our dearest rights, the trial by jury, the freedom of the press, the freedom of opinion, civil or religious, or opening on our peace of mind or personal safety the sluices of terrorism, if we see them with standing armies, when the absence of all other danger points to these as sole objects on which they are to be employed then indeed let us withdraw and call the nation to it's tents...But all will be alright in the end, though not perhaps by the shortest means. The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those
who are willing to work and give to those who would not.
Thomas Jefferson (From His Autobiography)

if only Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams,
Michael Steele or J. C. Watts could have been the Republican candidate instead of McCain the 2008 election would have truly been a referendum of ideas over race.

The outcome of would have been a more accurate measure of which ideology, Liberal or Conservative, is more racist.

Would the majority of Blacks, if given the choice between a Black candidate that believes in the empowerment of individuals through Liberty, that marriage is between one man and one woman, that abortion is murder, that theft by government is wrong and the Black (at least partially) Obama have still voted Democrat?

I don't know the answer, but I think the outcome would have been interesting and informative as to which ideology is shared by the majority of Americans both Black and White.

Send 'em ALL back to th' Hellhole

Obama's national defense force?

Better buy your own guns now.

What’s the Constitution got to do with?
Both L.B.J. and G.W.B. gave us a war abroad and social engineering at home. The people argued over the war and the social engineering. The people were divided.

Abraham Lincoln placed union soldiers in the states he needed to win reelection. The south was robbed after the war to pay for the cost of the war.

Actually the British were the first to do this stuff to America.
See: The Declaration of Independence and you’ll see how the U.S.A. works.
Just up date and rename the characters and the tactics. (The same strategy).

L.B.J. paid the north back by moving the standing Army into the large industrial cities and then the Protestants drove the Catholics out and the Democratic Party has controlled the large commercial centers because that’s where the money was after WW2.

Abraham Lincoln stopped any Constitutional debate because of the declaration of war.

L.B.J. declared a war in Asia and on poverty and ignorance so no one could challenge him but when you pay people not to work, idle hands become the devils workshop so we needed a war on drugs and then you give them food stamps and no work the next war that needs to be fought is on Obesity. See: (Jerry Springer show).

Sub prime loans. (Housing the standing army act).

G.W.B. was more of the same War and Social engineering. Move the standing army in from the south while the people fight over the war and social engineering issues.

If Al Gore is right about Global warming then Global warming was started by Rosa Parks and L.B.J.

Because when she refused to get in the back of the bus everyone had to have one car.

The civil rights movement and the riots drove out the whites and forced everyone to own two cars and drive farther to work. Good for oil and autos. Lol

The South is winning Civil War2 Started by L.B.J.

...lays out the facts Barone is trying to get at without the partisan sugar-coating Barone offers here.

We need a viable, relevant opposition party so we can have a 2 party system."

This is about as ignorant as it gets. Government by the People? Not hardly as the mob takes over...see Prop 8! For the People...not hardly as state and Feds are bankrupting the people. Of the People? Really? As the people, all the people, reach into their neighbor's pocket for self enrichment.

Democrats want Republicans to reach across the aisle and compromise on how many of our freedoms get systematically removed via our wallets. By compromise, they really mean just give in and keep trying the same old tired socialist redistribution policies that have failed since time began. By compromise they mean cave in on morally repugnant thinking and give in to immorality that didn't build civilizations, but most assuredly brought them down.

This conservative refuses to cave in and repeat history. When the history books are written it won't be called the information age, but the lack of imagination age.

You are an IDIOT

This morning....
...on Fox news there was a gaggle of people arguing about the up-and-coming new tax on gasoline along with other paycheck confiscations.

Two of the talking heads argued (correctly) that the gas tax would be terribly burdensome on the average person, and that fuel costs for our still-remaining businesses will drive up prices all over. They also said that the market should determine research for alternative fuels, and drilling here and now would help free us from foreign, American-hating suppliers.

The other two, kids in adult form they were, argued that alternative fuels would be financed by the new Democrat gas tax, and they agreed that no drilling would be forthcoming.
One of these two was a white man who indignantly added that the opposition's use of the words; "you guys", was inflammatory, to paraphrase. He was one serous kool-aid drinker.

His partner in stupidity was a black woman that kept grinning like a Cheshire cat while spouting her support for more taxes on the public. She also smiled broadly and remained silent when the opposition said that 4 and 5 bucks a gallon of gas was again in the making if she supported the new taxes. She was absolutely creepy.

It was common-sense vs. insanity, but the insane is now in power due to a majority of voter's blind fantasies for a human savior.

God help us.

This is what is so laughable about the left. Since when is our taxes ever spent for what they are intended for? Never. This will especially be the case with this tax since there isn't enough alternative energy to fill the void in this country.

RINOS dropped the ball
RINOS like Presidente Jorge and Amnesty John McCain largely alienated too many in the middle by embracing a neoCON war (surreptitiously engineered to get permanent bases in Iraq for Israel's security), ILLEGAL aliens, and irresponsible government growth. Dubya had the temerity to say recently that his biggest regret was that he did not have better intelligence about Iraq, which implied that the whole fiasco was a mistake! He had been snookered by Wolfy, Libby, Perle, Wurmser, etc., who then slunk away, their PNAC agenda having been perpetrated.

As for ILLEGALS, most among Middle Americans are sanguine about orderly, LEGAL immigration of the educated and skilled who can make true net contributions, BUT are LIVID about the unbridled, ILLEGAL invasion of the Hispanic welfare class.

Unfortunately, the tacit Conspiracy of Evil embraced the ILLEGAL invaders (including visa violators like the 9/11 perps) for various self-aggrandizing motives-- to use them for cheap labor (which is exorbitantly expensive all-in to us socio-economically) or, eventually, for votes and power.

Note to Lenard
Dissension between parties seems to be the only mechanism to arrive at some will of the people. "Some will", as expressed by the laws passed by Congress and signed by the President, obviously has to be in agreement with the Constitution. The USA is a constitutional republic; as such we elect representatives. If the representatives act in disagreement with our will, we vote them out of office. I am curious if you ever voted.

We can only hope that the Democrat Party hold will not be permanent, or at least that the current composition of the party will be very short-lived. As it currently stands, the core constituencies of the party bosses are those who are isolationist and statist in economic policy, extremely Anti-Semitic in foreign policy and all too willing to sacrifice their children, parents and neighbors in order to get what they want, as much as they want, immediately and without much effort. Honor and integrity are practically illegal to most of the adherents and office holders from this party, while power is all that matters.

David
LOL...Integrtity? Have you forgotten that these are politicians we're talking. All any of them care about is power, and those on both sides of the aisle will do whatever they can to achieve and retain that power.

Politicians are w***res by nature, and the best we voters can do is vote for the w***e most likely to promote our chosen agenda.

There are no final victories in politics
http://www.coxwashington.com/hp/content/reporters/stories/2 008/22/2008/11/24/GOP_FUTURE231STLEDE.html

The above article was from 11/24/08. Pretty much a re-hash with same good points - Power isn't permanent and all that.

What I find funny is how these pundits make Barack Obama out to be some sort of political genius. He's a puppet, thats it. He's just made out of better material than the last two puppets (Gore and Kerry). The Demcrats success was in getting the Republicans to fight the same way Israel does with the arabs. Now the real smart people can pull the new puppets strings.

No Majority
Very informative analysis. The fact is that the core of the Republican party is not represented. The silence of the Reepublican ledership when Bush, Palin and other who are are crucified by the media. These are the NE ower-brokers who would rather have a democrat than an Evangelical Christian win. Unless the prejudice of the leadership is changed, I hope to see a new party formed that will represent the majority.

Democrats are very easy.....
...to understand because of their textbook projection.

When they went hysterical claiming the Bush "stole" the last election, they gave away a common practice of theirs, to wit: stealing elections.

Having worked in the criminal justice system for decades, I've witnessed career criminals (see also incurable personality disorders) go absolutely out of their gourds if they aren't treated with the most ethical of standards and rules by the system.

For the liberals reading the above paragraph, this means personality disorders demand double standards with their enemies being held to a very high level, and themselves, to little if any.

The Dems are in power. Leftist organizations such as Acorn and the bottom-feeders who are fixing Stuart Smiley's (Al Franken) vote count are not called to task by the courts.

The Dems are committed to handing illegals everything including the kitchen sink which will insure their future votes - real or invented.

Face it, folks. Mr. Barone's article is dead wrong. All systems are in place to perpetuate liberal dominance for many years.

First, yes I have voted in every election I have been of age to do so. Now to the will of the people; You clearly don't get it, the form of this government is given to us already in the Constitution, what is there about the will of the people? We elect those whom we see as best able to wisely carry out the Constitutional responsibility of particular offices, if the people want something other than what the Constitution says then they can push for Amendments, but will of the people? NO, you don't get to arbitrarily decide to circumvent the Constitution. The only laws that get to be passed are those necessary for bringing sbout Article 1, Section 8. Again please try reading the Constitution; find me The Dept. of Ed., not there, Medicaid, NOT THERE, Job creation, NOT THERE. Now what will you do upon seeing what the Constitution actually says? It will be a test of the kind of person you are.

Farmer's wife
Your experiment happened when Keyes ran against Obama -- it was not even close. Perhaps it would be too bad, but I doubt it would have worked (unless people really thought long and hard about the judgment issue with Rev. Right).

I think I've heard this somewhere before
"Rather than allegiance to any political party as such, Americans will expect that we spend our resources here at home, on our own needs.

I think a majority may be emerging around that issue."

Sounds like words which could have also been written on 9/10/01. God forbid that this would happen, but another terrorist attack on U.S. soil might well change the game again.

RIchD and term limits
RichD (#59), I agree with a lot of what you wrote:

"Put term limits on both houses of the Congress - eight years max. Don't tell me we can't find more qualified people.

Reduce the campaign time for both primaries and general elections, and campaign spending severely.

Put term limits on judges - 10 years and then go back to work."

I would add one more: Term limits for bureaucrats. *Nobody* should work for the government for more than a decade (with possible exception for quasi-governmental agencies like the Post Office).

And ideally, nobody should work in government as a first job, either. Spend some time in the productive class, share your talents with the government for a *short* time, and go back to the productive class again. I don't think the Founders meant for anyone to suckle at the government teat for a lifetime.

..the things that pass for "analysis" in this country is hilarious. This clown is basically saying there is no such thing as a typical American, although the Reeps have a plurality of folks who might be considered typical Americans. Not a majority, though.

What a clown. The reason why a majority of Americans voted out you bums in the last two cycles is because we did not like what you were doing with our country. Our country. Not your country. Our country. Now, good luck trying to cobble together a majority--typical Americans do not like stupid economics, malevolent strategic policy, and double-dealing moralism. So unless you Reeps change your game, you are gonna be sitting in the minority seat for quite awhile. And, for the sake of our national reputation, the new majority is going to start defining what it means to be a "typical American." You punks have made a muck of it..

I say to you what I say all, where in the Constitution is there any authority given for what the Democrat party puts forth as issues? Health Care not in there, Department of Education, not there. Do you want me to keep going? C'mon show me IN THE CONSTITUTION where what you liberals fight for is there? If not then we have a bunch of people who willingly ignore the LAW of this country in pursuit of their agenda.

Presidential Elections 1952-2008
In 1952 Dwight Eisenhower, a republican was elected president. But after 8 years of peace and prosperity a John Kennedy, a Democrat beat Republican Dick Nixon in 1960.

But 8 years later in 1968 Nixon beat Hubert H. Humphreys to put the Republicans back in power.

But 1976 was the Democrat year and Democrat Carter won. But in 1980 it took Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan to make the one exception Republican Reagan won in 1980.

But in 1984 a Republican peak year Reagan won agan and in 1988 a Republican minor year Bush won.

But in 1992 we were back on the 8 year cycle and Democrat Clinton held sway. But 2000 was the 8 year Republican peak year and Bush won.

However 2008 was the 8 year Demoratic peak year and Obama won.

Since 1952 no party has lost the presidency in its peak year and only once in its minor year.

It seems that swing voters tend to change parties every 8 years. It has been happening for 56 years. If Obama is not a carter and the Repubican nominee is not a Reagan then Obama will win in 2012 and a Republican will win in 2-2012 .. the next Republican peak year.

Lenard asks:
"I say to you what I say all, where in the Constitution is there any authority given for what the Democrat party puts forth as issues? Health Care not in there, Department of Education, not there. Do you want me to keep going? C'mon show me IN THE CONSTITUTION where what you liberals fight for is there? ------------------------------------------
How is this any different for the Republican party? They also have education and health care on their agenda. I don't see No Child Left Behind or personal retirement accounts mentioned in the Constitution either.

BTW - It's the Democratic party, not the Democrat party.

Lenard
The Founders would laugh their backside off at what you are attempting to do--acting as though the Constitution comprises some kind of alpha and omega of human wisdom. Hey, chump, times change. If an agricultural late 18th century society does not need national health care, but an urbanized early 21st century society does, then that is how the cookie crumbles. Where does the constitution say that national health care, say, is expressly prohibited? It doesn't. And so we are left with clowns like you, with a kind of idolatrous fetish, incapable of recognizing what the constitution is--a framework for government.

Men are supposed to draw both old and new from their store. The problem with conservatives today is that they do not even know anything about the civic and moral heritage they are supposedly defending.

stupiKev - sell the post office! We have
UPS, FedEx, etc., and everybody's going paperless - bills, banking...

Kev: "I would add one more: Term limits for bureaucrats. *Nobody* should work for the government for more than a decade (with possible exception for quasi-governmental agencies like the Post Office)."

To Patriotic Liberal;
I was going to respond in kind -- that is, with bile, and smug vanity.

But then I noticed that -- at least in part -- we agree. Namely, "typical Americans do not like stupid economics, malevolent strategic policy, and double-dealing moralism."

It's just that we hold almost diametrically opposed views about what these might be.

I am convinced that the Obama Administration, if it holds true to the policy allegiances presented during the campaign, will drive our country into a Depression more severe than that of the 1930's. And will invite World War III.

In WW II, we had two large oceans to protect us and several years to get ready. With modern inter-continental rockets and atomic warheads, we will get 45 minutes warning. And then death.

You should have been a little more cautious.

P.S. "Our" includes "your". And "We" includes "you."

SInce 1989 the UN has been governing US
In the last 20 years the United Nations have been sneeking in it's AGENDA 21
Both parties have fallen for it... hook, line and sinker...
If you've hated the way this country has turned you should have a look here on the UN's website and read the proposal.

I have been dismayed about the turn this country has taken to say the least now,
I understand.
We need to pull out of the UN and until we do that we'll be headed on a one way street to "sustainable development" (aka Marxism) as the UN puts it.

UN's agenda 21

http://www.un.org/esa/sustdev/documents/agenda21/english/ag enda21toc.htm

Agenda 21 on education
A. Reorienting education towards sustainable development

Basis for action

36.3. Education, including formal education, public awareness and training should be recognized as a process by which human beings and societies can reach their fullest potential. Education is critical for promoting sustainable development and improving the capacity of the people to address environment and development issues. While basic education provides the underpinning for any environmental and development education, the latter needs to be incorporated as an essential part of learning. Both formal and non-formal education are indispensable to changing people's attitudes so that they have the capacity to assess and address their sustainable development concerns. It is also critical for achieving environmental and ethical awareness, values and attitudes, skills and behaviour consistent with sustainable development and for effective public participation in decision-making. To be effective, environment and development education should deal with the dynamics of both the physical/biological and socio-economic environment and human (which may include spiritual) development, should be integrated in all disciplines, and should employ formal and non-formal methods and effective means of communication.

Trinity church
I'm honestly not sure how President Obama showed he has much in-common with people on the other side of the partisan divide - when his church in Chicago preached God d___ America.

This must have been the weirdest election ever.

Maybe this was the first time Americans were ever told my the media who to vote for - so it worked? Only way to explain it.

my last post
By the way - my Reply 124, was in response to this point by Michael Barone:

"Barack Obama now has that task. He has shown unusual skills and the capacity and willingness to stress what he has in common with those on the other side of the partisan divide."

Usually it seems to me that white married Christians, or other traditional Americans for that matter, would reject the call for God to d____ America - no matter how much President Obama prays to Jesus or explains away his former Pastor.

to patriotic liberal
You are merely showing how ignorant and foolish you are. Your statement concerning the Founding Fathers has no basis in fact. James Madison and Thomas Jefferson both (among others)opposed any attempt by others of their time to innovate, for an example see what they said concerning a National Bank. There is a way to make changes in this government, and its called Amendment, otherwise all are bound by this legal document called the Constitution, because if one part of it does not hold true, then no part of it holds true. No one has any right to violate my rights "because" the times have changed. You probably won't get this, but try thinking long and hard about unalienable rights.

republicans will again rise
once they get past the notion that they have to be democrat lites.

to camanintx
I was not responding to a Republican, otherwise, yes, No Child Left Behind, Social Security, and Corporate Welfare could have been easily included. Bush clearly broke the law in giving money to the D3. If you had read some of my earlier comments you would see this. Congress is only authorized to do what Article 1, Section 8 says, and by virtue of that also the President, who carries these things out in his Executive capacity, otherwise it's a state or personal right.

John, and the rise of Republicans
It is conservative principle which has a chance (not a certainty) of rising here in the good ol' USA. It may be labeled and implemented as Republican or maybe not. A combination of human nature and Darwinian survival principles dictates what will occur and what works. The history of Mankind shows ever increasing complexity, division and specialization of labor, including mental labor. Insofar as these are successful and a certain level of comfort is achieved, the balance between ambition and sloth becomes important. This balance is importantly affected by culture. Cultures which revere education, work which contributes to the culture, and recognition of contribution have advantages over cultures which place lower value on these things. The bottom line involves 2 basic verities in conflict. First, the human race has some level of inherent drive, which decreases as comfort increases. This drive varies from culture to culture. The second is that comfort and expression of potential increase as this drive moves people to perform effectively, noting this effectiveness is also a functin of govt and culture. So, people work until they are satisfied, then quit. To be cont.

A long Denmocratic rule....
The democrats will be in charge for a long while. Lets not forget that in 2010 it is almost exclusivly republicans up for realection, making it almost impossible for us to lose enough seats to forfeit control. Lets also not forget that in 2010 (before elections) re-districting happens and the party that controls congress controls re-districting. Get used to being a minority party republicans. :)

Lenard
Jefferson was a virtual anti-Federalist--at least until he became President. And Madison was his protege. They are necessary to a constitutional understanding, but not sufficient.

Pistol
I'm a liberal so naturally I hope you are wrong about a rise of conservative principles but I gotta say that was a very interesting post. I've always been curious about how much darwinist humanism effects people's politics. Kudos to you.

Coming Permanent Hispanic Majority ...
... which many people, like George F. Will, have applauded: That is their right, but one can imagine voicing such swooning views, let's say in the face of heavy Scandinavian immigration, on a growing white majority. The media would start measuring you for a Nazi uniform. (The good news is that you might someday be played by Tom Cruise.)

GOP doomed
Considering the actions of the GOP over the last few decades, they've grown so accustomed to being the minor party, they can't seem to get anything done when they do have power. The GOP gained power with a core group, Evangelical Christians, that they'd just as soon forget.
Todays GOP has turned it's back on this group, in favor of the old "Country Club" Republican ideals. They figured that the EC have no where else to go. But there's a big difference between voting Republican, and just opting out of the elections based on principle.

Fred PA 2000 says:
"I am convinced that the Obama Administration, if it holds true to the policy allegiances presented during the campaign, will drive our country into a Depression more severe than that of the 1930's. And will invite World War III."

And I doubt you expected the Bush administration to increase our national debt by $3.5 trillion, oversee one of the worst economic downturns in decades and involve us in two simultaneous wars. Hopefully your forecast for the Obama administration will be just as accurate.

What role did the evangelicals play in the GOP

You surely know the answer to these questions.
And the one swept aside had a success record
that made Huckabee/Mccain look like little leaguers ! Tho ' there was a evangelical

predominately the religionists helped put Obama

"Patriotic Liberal" is a oxymoron
The term patriotic liberal is an oxymorn. There's no such thing.

The most basic function of gov't or a patriot is to defend the community or nation from external threat. Usually this entails the development of armed forces to accomplish that. Nearly without exception a nation's armed forces are led & composed of social & political conservatives.

In the U.S. our armed forces are disproportionately composed of small town & rural Americans and Catholics & Baptists, which tends to align American patriotism with the mores & values of inherently conservative small town & Christian America.

A liberal who refuses to don the nation's uniform is a social parasite who prefers to leave the dirty job of defending the community to others while he battens off the protected society and smirkingly proclaims he's morally superior by virtue of avoiding the tough & dangerous iob of defending the nation.

patritotic liberal
You said to me that the Founding Fathers would laugh at what I had to say, I gave you two examples showing the FALSENESS of your statement, and now you say that's not enough. I could give many more, James Wilson for example in touting the Constitution, spoke of the fact that there was no need for a Bill of Rights as anything not expressly given to the Federal Government was not theirs to take. Again I could quote many more attendees of the Con Con and other prominent men of the time, but you know what it doesn't matter; A PLAIN SIMPLE READING of the Constitution shows this. Were these individuals so idiotic as to include a process for Amendments if we could just pick and choose what aspects we "consider" to be relevant. The question is are you dense or just unwilling to acknowledge the plain simple truth. If the latter, well that speaks to the kind of individual you are.

Yellowstone Rumbles...
Maybe it's nothing to be worried about, but the giant pool of magma under Yellowstone Nat'l Park has been rumbling a lot more than usual lately.

What does that have to do with the subject of this article?

Perhaps nothing, if all Yellowstone does is rumble. On the other hand, an explosion like the one some 600,000 years ago would basically wipe out the grain belts of the US and Canada, kill a very large number of people in both countries either directly (being buried under several feet of ash) or indirectly, (starvation and climate change).

I admit to wondering how Mr. Obama and his government (or even a Republican government) would handle a catastrophe of that magnitude.

Just thought I'd give you-all something else to think about.

Zentrism Rules
Why Zentrism? Why not?

A few wise pundits cautioned, during the campaigns, that events were really in charge, not any particular, calculating, maybe even Machiavellian mind. One had the sense that the inevitable Hillary with her "machine," might just have feet of clay. McCain nervously pointed out that "no one is destined to be POTUS." It was a revealing comment, especially in retrospect. It shows that destiny or events do indeed trump our very best planning and hard-driving, monomaniacal efforts.

Actually, centrism or this coined word, Zentrism, does not "rule." I believe a Providence is in charge and that human beings do the best they can. The wise ones, like Hillary, Barack and John are prepared, if necessary, to lose graciously.

Another implied point of the article, an exceptional one, is: Do your very best work; find your apostolate or your "game plan" and go for it. But realize in humility that a 9/11 or an economic catastrophe is, if history tells us anything, right around the corner.

And, don't forget to go to your AA meeting or church or meditation sitting.

"Republicans shunned minorities. They weren't shunned, they just weren't catered to."

No. "Shunned" would be accurate. It was Richard Nixon who hatched the Southern Strategy by pitching racism to Dixie Democrats as a way of cracking the Democratic party's hold in the South. It worked. Then. Now, with minority populations (Mexican, Asian) the fastest growing, it ain't working. Hence the "Immigration Reform" the Bush administration tried to pitch to bring them under the GOP tent.

" 'Laissez-faire Capitalism leads to recession/depressions' "

"Anybody who thinks that we ever have/had this hasn't tried to run a business! What a joke."

Beginning in the early 90's, both Dem and Repub administrations, and their enablers in Congress, loosened regulations on the financial markets ... notably sub-prime mortgages. But it was Wall Street -- not the federal government -- who invented the exotic instruments like CDOs and Credit Default Swaps which generated huge profits with every bundled batch of mortgaged-backed securities they sliced-and-diced and then resold to investors

And it was the credit rating agencies like Moody's, Standard & Poors, etc. who transformed those securities from a BBB to AAA rating (talk about alchemy!) -- based on untested financial models provided by the institutions they were charged with overseeing.

Oh, and where do Moody's and the others derive their revenues? From the ratings agencies. Duh. The SEC was warned by industry insiders on at least two occasions of the high potential for disaster, but ignored them.

Why? All parties were profiting handsomely. No real enthusiasm for shutting it down. I'm no economist, but that looks like laissez faire to me.

You're not going back far enough - go to the Carter years. I think that it's more complicated than that.

But, my point was the number of regulations that affect anyone with any kind of a business. I guess that you haven't had one.

Minorities Comprise THE Majority!
Biggest little dirty secret: Caucasians are the true minority but don't tell the MEDIA you are on to their dirty little cover up.

Republicans not all that white any more
I think a better approach to this question is to look at the CORE constituencies, and in this case, Barone is correct. Really, the Republican party is the party of patriotism. The Democratic party's core constituency - the "intelligentsia", is not.

I don't think that characterizing the Republican party as "white" is valid any more. If you look at conservative intellectuals, you will find that the most prominent among them actually tend to be Jewish, black and Asian. They are certainly not rejected by Republicans.
