Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Here we are -- the non-McCainiacs -- just minding our own business and contemplating such lofty ideals as party unity while the McCainiac cabal lobs yet more rhetorical cruise missiles our way. Hold your fire, boys, we're trying to meet you at the peace table.

If I were just slightly inclined toward the conspiratorial, I'd wonder whether this were an orchestrated assault by the McCain forces against the recalcitrant. Could more be going on than meets the eye?

Given the aggressiveness of McCain's soldiers, I'm thinking they are not as interested in a rapprochement with Reagan conservatives as they are in taking over the party from them.

If they were seeking reunification, would they be making their attacks personal? Would they be suggesting that those not-yet-warm to John are afflicted with McCain Derangement Syndrome? Would they be salivating over their delusional fantasy that Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin and Laura Ingraham are losing their influence?

You'd think they'd think twice before hurling invectives toward the very base of the Republican Party, whose support in the general election is indispensable to McCain.

Not to worry, say the McCainiac lieutenants. "We're not directing our fire at the base. We're just criticizing its self-appointed spokesmen: Rush, Sean, Mark, Laura and assorted winger pundits. Those fire-breathing loudmouths don't represent the base, but only a 'very conservative' group, which is statistically insignificant."

McCainiac elitists should be careful not to discount the depth and breadth of the angst out there against this ongoing abandonment of conservative principles under the Republican umbrella. It's not just Rush, Sean, Mark and Laura.

If they could see my e-mails alone, they'd be shocked. Just think of what the others are receiving. To be sure, I'm receiving plenty from people chiding me -- after misreading my columns -- for refusing to support McCain and thereby facilitating the election of Hillary or Obama and all that entails.

Let me say it again, more directly: I will support McCain if he's the nominee. So please quit putting words in my mouth. I won't, however, stop trying to make him accountable to the base and to pull him to the right.

But it doesn't appear McCain's henchmen will be satisfied with the mere support of the base. And they darn sure won't cotton to our efforts to keep McCain from straying further to the left.

No, what we are witnessing is a resurrection of the historical GOP turf war between the Reagan conservatives and the disgruntled Rockefeller moderates. This neo-Rockefeller branch of the GOP sees this moment -- McCain's inevitable nomination, albeit by default, and the politically confused state of evangelicals under the tutelage of Mike Huckabee -- as an opportunity finally to retake the GOP from the Reagan conservatives. Think of it as GOP Rearrangement Syndrome. And their strong support of the war has given them a narrative around which to forge their new coalition -- as if they have a monopoly on hawkishness.

They want to remake the party in their image. They are the neoconservatives, the national-greatness types who profess to believe in conservative ideals but have no problem achieving them through liberal ends -- i.e., more government. They apparently believe that history has passed traditional conservatism by, that big government is here to stay -- and not to be resisted -- and that Reagan conservatives should make the best of it and try to direct government toward conservative causes.

Reagan conservatives (and Libertarians) recognize that conservatism through liberal means is still liberalism. They strongly reject that they must abandon their fealty to fundamental constitutional restraints on government.

This is just a humble suggestion, but perhaps John McCain should be less exercised about the recalcitrance of traditional conservatives to his liberal meanderings. Instead, he should worry about the silent coup being orchestrated in his name -- as if his default ascension gives him some kind of McMandate to restructure the party. He should stop and consider whether he is being used to usher in a paradigm shift in the conservative movement and the Republican Party. It will never work anyway since the very sizeable base remains overwhelmingly conservative. Just look at Huckabee's victories and Romney's unsolicited win of the Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll.

McCain has a choice to make -- and so do neo-Rockefellers presuming to do his bidding. They can either engage in a scorched-earth strategy against the conservative base in furtherance of their power play -- in which case, they'll never get to first base (pun intended). Or they can work with the base, most of which, I dare say, will work with them, especially toward the common end of a secure America.

The McCainiacs, instead of lecturing the right, ought to practice what they preach. Can't we all just get along?

Besides, it's much more fun to direct our fire at Democrats. So let's get back to business.

Limbaugh's more conciliatory than I am
He may be willing to wave the olive branch.

I'm not.

McCain?

Never.

Just Like You
Ooo, I'm so aggressive. I support McCain. Here, put this blindfold on.

No, we are not all that bad. We are just dolts trying to survive, like you. :)

You have not exactly admitted your faults this season, which were many. You were not all that conservative, or traditional, Mr Giuliani Republican.

Sorry about that.
5 stars and an olive branch. Anything you like.

Mac & lots of support, even Geroge Soros
John McCain funded by Soros since 2001
Candidate's Reform Institute also accepted funds from Teresa Kerry
As Sen. John McCain assumes the GOP front-runner mantle, his long-standing, but little-noticed association with left-wing donors such as George Soros and Teresa Heinz Kerry is receiving new attention among his Republican critics

Thank you, David.
I am not a henchman, a Rockefeller Repub, an elitist, or anything else. I am not paid to blog and I haveno hidden agenda. I am a Conservative Republican who does not want any Clinton close to the White House. I don't want Bill as first lady, or Hillary as VP. I do not want an unknown socialist like Obama as Commander in Chief who has already said he would reach out to the Nazi of Iran.

I also do not want Conservatives staying home or throwing up their hands in disgust or giving up. I want them keeping pressure on the political process and our elected leaders in such a way that we stay relevant. I do not want conservatives turning on other conservatives because of disagreements on how to attack the political problems that we face.
Because of my stance that we should support the nominee, I have been called a communist, a traitor, a socialist, a liberal and worst of all that i hate my country.
I see the coming storm from the dems and if we don't support our nominee, this country will be in a lot worse shape and further down the socialist path, which it will not recover from for decades, and not just one election cycle.
Don't ever give up your principles and ideals, but you sometimes have to play the political hand that is dealt.

BrianR, I am with you.
In fact, I was thinking that the whole time I was reading the column. Probably because I was pretty steamed after reading Cal Thomas's absurd column about "reinventing conservatism."

I will not vote for McCain. I will not vote for Hillary or Obama either. I will leave that space on the ballot blank or I will write in Mitt Romney.

I am sick and tired of the GOP elites using fear mongering to attempt to force true conservatives into accepting McCain as the GOP nominee. Like one other poster said, they cannot force us to vote for someone who has not and does not uphold conservative principles. I would add that I cannot vote for someone who is not to be trusted, and someone who is nothing more than a liberal with an "R" behind his name (oh, that must be "redefined conservatism!")

Confrontation
Yes, after dealing with the lames though it is hard to be non-confrontational. Especially with someone like Mclame who has gone out of his way to be CONFRONTATIONAL with the conservatives. Unlike you David, there I will not vote for him. I will not go out and vote for Hillary or Obama either.

Those of you who will not vote....
...you are fools, doing exactly what the libs want.

And if you do vote, SURELY you don't want to split the vote with a sanctuary-supporting Huckabee.

Become active against the aspects of McCain that you don't like, and put him in office, for gosh sakes. Life is quite imperfect.

Furthermore, go read his book, "Faith of My Fathers" and then come back and try to make me believe that he'll sell out this Republic.

I wanted Romney, I'll stand behind McCain, and work toward controlling illegals.

BrianR and other no voters
wished I could have your conviction, I dont. I will be voting In the primary and in the general election. My first, second, and third choice have dropped out before my state has voted(sucks to be at the hind end.).

I dont have much enthusiasm for individual candidate but I certainly do like Republican ideals. Lets be honest the Republican Party is the party closest to conservative ideals. Not some right wing nut job(whatever that is) but true rugged individualism, moral capitalistic, Government is not the solution to lifes challenges, type of conservative ideas. I certainly dont see any of those ideas coming from Democratic Party(see Hillary's Christmas commercial)

The criminality of McCain-Feingold
--
What seems to escape a great many political commentators - and their audiences - is that the U.S. Constitution (including its amendments) is nothing, more or less, than the law of the land.

Without it, the federal government is simply not legitimate, and warrants neither respect nor obedience nor even the right to exist.

Government adherent to the U.S. Constitution is compliant with an explicit social contract.

Government violative of the U.S. Constitution is criminal, and it is the duty of the law-abiding U.S. citizen to take whatever measures are required to compel federal officers engaged in any such criminal activities to cease, desist, and be held personally responsible for the damages they inflict.

We have John McCain, who makes much of his long experience as an officer of the federal government, first as a commissioned officer in the Naval Service, then in the U.S. Congress.

He makes much of his expertise and his knowledge of laws and regulations (civil and miliary).

Can it be reasonably concluded that Senator McCain didn't *KNOW* that the provisions of McCain-Feingold were blatantly violative of the First Amendment from the moment he began planning it?

Has he not demonstrated criminal *mens rea* (i.e., explicit intention to violate the law) in the formulation, introduction, and efforts to enact the statute known as McCain-Feingold?

Can it be argued that he didn't know what he was doing? (Diminished capacity defense, anyone?)

Is John McCain, therefore, not a criminal?

Has he not violated the U.S. Constitution (a charter of government he has sworn to uphold and defend both as an officer in the Naval Service and as a member of Congress) with criminal intention and malice aforethought?

What the hell is he doing out of handcuffs and ankle chains, much less running for the Presidency of these United States?

--

The Hundred-Years' War
Nothing can be worse for this country than four years of McCain. Nothing.

Don't get played by the Dinosaur Media
The Lamestream Dinosaur media are having extasisies at the thought of both neutering Talk Radio AND giving conservatives no real place to go. They KNOW the value of the Conservative Base and they WANT it to sit home.

IF we can get McShamnesty to nominate a decent veep such as Thompson, Romney or some other more conservative figure than himself maybe we CAN get that one in office in 4-8 years. The real task is to take back both Houses if not now then in 2 years. With control of the Congress we CAN hold his feet to the fire. NO amount of media support and fawning adulation will counter the veto override whip he needs to feel now and then.

More importantly if we get Congress back we can sideline, marginalize and relegate to irrelevancy a Clinton or Obama presidency.

As for Obama he BETTER watch his back!!! If he gets the nomination he's got to deal with Clinton, Inc. They do the best oppositin research in politics. They will channel all the dirt they dig up on Barry Boy right to the GOP. That way they keep their fingerprints off the dagger.

-Ray

I guess I am a fool
Those of you who are yellow dog Republicans are aiding and abetting the leftward tilt of the U.S. By not holding the Republican Party's feet to the fire you are helping them in their movement to the left.

McCain's Phony Border Security Plan
McCain claims that he wants a secure border first and that security will be certified by the Governors of the border states. What a con job!

Imagine the security of our Mexican border being certified by liberal pro-open border Gov. Richardson, Kennedy in law RINO Gov. Schwarzenegger, Gov. Perry of Texas whose under the influence of Pres. Bush, and the democratic Gov. Napolitano of Arizona who vetoed anti-illegal immigration laws in the past.

After they certify security, then McCain's old amnesty plan kicks in.

With this cynical suggestion, McCain proves that he has no respect for the opinion of Americans who opposed the McCain-Kennedy Amnesty Bill.

http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/01/mccains_acu_ratings. html

Sen. McCain boasts of an 82.3% ACU conservative rating but in 2006 his ACU conservative rating was 65

Further, McCain's ACU ratings since 1998 put him on the liberal side among Republicans.
The few Republicans consistently more liberal than McCain would be Chafee (formerly R-RI), Collins (R-ME), Snowe (R-ME) and Specter (R-PA) all from liberal northeastern states.

DON'T STAY HOME ON ELECTION DAY!!
Many true blue conservatives will stay home on Election Day, not only causing either Barak or Hillary to win the Presidency, but down ticket conservative Republicans to lose as well.

Even if John McCain is the Presidential nominee, true blue conservatives ought to, if they cannot support him, cast ballots for conservative candidates running for Congress and state offices and for good ballot measures.

The best defense is a good offense. Conservatives ought to think in terms of electing as many true blue conservatives as possible to Congress to stand against Barak, Hillary, or McCainiac shenanigans.

Don't ignore the importance of the Governorships or the State Legislatures. They are the farm teams of the Presidency and Congress respectively.

McCain's Crucible
The McCain camp has made reference to the irrelevancy of social and fiscal conservatives. The fiscal conservatives see catching the Navy boat extention fisco as hitting the broad side of the barn. The faithful are skeptical, even wary of the behavior exhibited.

The one thing I greatly admire about Bush and Cheney is their tolerance and hospitality to many different groups. It takes courage and authenticity to support the faithful/spiritual and fiscal conservatives for I sense from the McCain group that being faithful is synonymous to them with naiveté and/or idealism as opposed to their superior view that pragmatism, rationality and “reality” are the unsentimental view point to take. If that is what faith, reason and hope is to you, I can see why trying to engage with conservatives is such a trial.

So why not be a maverick and ok stem cell research? Why not be unconventional and fund cloning? Why not increase FISA activity on US citizens? Why not grow the military to the point that even James Madison would have agreed that the military establishment and its commercial concerns had overtaken Democracy? Why not a bit of totalitarianism, the people obviously don't know the meaning of the word Freedom as understood by the political campaign body?

Let me be despised. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness within the Constituion are worth it as the growth of government threatens our freedom.

Respectfully, I do not need to read his book, but only to be aware of the legislation that he has supported, the people with whom he has kept company, and the very words that have come from his mouth to see that he has already tried to subvert this republic at every opportunity he has been given...

yava

I think conservatives should look carefully at there political party chairman and nominating committee.

The one thing conservatives don't do is marshall a large following - more thinkers than actors.

For those that can both think and act, consider marshalling more like minded individuals and overtake committees who position themselves more to delivering delegates to the State than successfully reaching out to develop local support and elected officials.

This is a sign of the dying gasp of an ever retreating Republican Party. Developing people that will knock on doors and hand out literature will also gain us an appreciation for what they do.

For those of us that
find it difficult to support McCain and feel that the GOP has left us, there may be another option. After reading the platform of the Constitution party at http://www.Constitutionparty.com, it seems that we would be more welcome there than with the GOP.

David, If you
had said stupidity, I would have thought this piece was about wobbie. Oh well, let them call us names, I have plenty of cruise missiles of my own! You want me to vote for him? Make him secure ALL of our borders and quit crossing the aisle so often, and quit writing stupid freedom of speech killing bills like the McQuack-Finemegold crap! In other words make him less LIBERAL. Can you change a zebra's stripes?

Your post at 1206 was excellent.

Of course, let me shamelessly plog my blog. One article up straight outta H*LL on Dummycrats Underground and an examination of Social Security, privatization, and how Jorge Bush and the RINOs screwed us.

You know, everyone keeps saying this but DANG, GO LOOK AT HIS RECORD!
He is not going to change why should he? You think he will secure all the borders just because we become active and demand it? If I walked up to him the day after I voted for him and he won POTUS and ask him to do this, do you really think he would, or would he just start screaming? I think we both know the answer to that!

STRATEGY TO DEFEAT MC CAIN
When President Bush nominated his personal attorney, Harriet Miers, to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, conservatives wasted no time in launching a drive to defeat her. The bloggers and talk radio crowd played a big role. Less than 30 days later, Miers withdrew her nomination.

President Bush then nominated the eminently qualified Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. The rest is history.

Could the strategy that kept Harriet Miers off the Supreme Court keep McCain from becoming the Republican nominee?

Just about what I figured
form David. We conservatives(fiscal and national defense) own the party as long as the social conservatives don't try to go off the reservation we will be nice to them and let them be with us. We pick Governor Hairdo and then Huck seduced them. Well, we lost so we will play nice, more or less and let McCain have the nomination. There is still a chance to stop McCain whom most of us on these boards think really hurts the party but you hesitate to climb on board because of what Rush, Sean and others said about Mike when Mitt was still in the race. Yesterday Rush changed his tune and said he could vote for Huckabee. I hate to quote a line from an idiot movie, On The Beach, but
There is still time, Brothers. Vote for Huckabee to stop McCain. Vote for Huckabee because you reviewed his record and like him. Just vote now because he can still not get the nomination. Don't let the Bob Dole, Jack Kemp moderate wing run the party to another defeat like in 96.

David

David right above are your errors. You do not represent "Reagan Conservatives" those are the very people you are calling RINOs and who are supporting McCain. What is wrong? Did Rush give up all his polling or does he really believe he is master of the universe LMAO. Rush has been master of finding out what direction the crowd is going and getting in front of it - why did he fail this time? Money or power?

Just about what I figured

McCain
I feel McCain when pres. will work with the dems. in such a way that will destroy the conservative movement. Securing the gov. 100yrs. for the libs he has joined.
With McCain as pres. socialism will arrive and the press will blame all errors on the republican party

No McCain....ever
David Limbaugh....have you not read any of this:
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId= 56177

McCain is funded by George Sorors, Teresa Heinz Kerry and organizations committed to abortion rights, homosexual rights and agendas, illegal immigration and more.

I will not vote for this fraud.

Limbaugh has merit
when he says if Mccain is the nominee, he will vote for him. What is the alternative? We conservatives didn't have a leader to rally enough support in Romney, Huckabee has a very slim chance, so are we short sighted like the dems and not see what will happen if we don't vote Mccain? Seriously, Obama or the Clintons, think about it, it will happen! There is a lot of power in the presidency, even if somehow we regain Congress. I think voting is most all the time, lesser of 2 evils, at least MCcain with all his traitorous acts, can't compare with the party of death, defeat and doom for the tax payer!

And more
About this sanctimonious fraud John McCain......

The Keating Five crook....that you moderates and US Senators have endorsed.

BrianR and LzVandy...

Right on the money! I will vote on election, but will NOT pull the lever for McCain! I refuse to vote for "lesser evils" anymore. That has brought conservatism to the brink...David Limbaugh ought to know better than to vote for McCain since he knows it will move conservatism further away from influencing our policies....that is what the liberals want...you vote for McCain you're voting to remove conservatism from the arena of government...God help us!

There is an point that the dumbos

(including halD and the Twinkie) don't get!

It's called PRINCIPLES!

The dumbos don't care who or what inhabits OUR White House, as long as it has a "D" after their name. In fact, they don't care what moral reprobates inhabit Congress... I give you Barney Franks, just for starters....

In fact, it's pretty obvious that the dumbos don't even know what PRINCIPLES, ETHICS, and MORALS are.

The Republicans DO CARE... A LOT! And the Conservative Republicans CARE A LOT MORE!!!

They'll never aim fire at Dems!
Because McCain basically IS a Dem -- as a matter of fact, how much you wanna bet that the first time the conservative base rises in opposition to something McCain wants to do as President, he will take the Dems' side over the "racist" Repubs who want the border controlled, etc. I say the hell with him.

Amen, Brother
Great column, David. 5 stars from me.
