Democratic Stronghold Caves Into Trump's Popularity

A stronghold Democratic Florida city approved a move to name a major street after President-elect Donald Trump’s landslide victory.

In a 9 to 1 vote, the County Commission approved Miami-Dade’s Hialeah’s initiative to rename Palm Avenue as “Donald J. Trump Avenue” as a symbolic tribute to the president-elect who flipped the city Republican during the 2024 election, which hasn’t happened since George H.W. Bush in 1988.

Trump secured 55.2 percent of the votes in Miami-Dade, while Vice President Kamala Harris only received 43.71 percent.

“President Donald J. Trump Avenue is official in Miami-Dade County!" District 6 Miami-Dade Commissioner Kevin M. Cabrera wrote on X.

“Today, we ratified the City of Hialeah’s initiative to honor President Trump’s legacy of championing freedom and opportunity by co-designating Palm Avenue—a vital artery in our community—as "President Donald J. Trump Avenue,” his post continued. Cabrera affirmed that Miami city strongly supported Trump throughout the election, praising the incoming 47th president’s leadership and vision for the United States.

The change in the street name is notable, considering the Democratic majority on the County Commission. Democrats hold seven of the 13 seats on the officially nonpartisan board, giving them the power to potentially block the vote from being approved.

However, only one Democrat commission member, Marleine Bastien, said they couldn’t vote in favor of the street name change because of Trump’s plans to deport all of the illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. under the Biden-Harris Administration.

Bastien declined to vote against the move because she respects Trump's victory in the Electoral College, the popular vote, and Miami-Dade County.

“However, his victory does not erase the collective trauma that immigrants and citizens alike felt during this election cycle,” she said.

Social media praised Miami-Dade’s decision to honor Trump, calling it a “testament to how deeply this community values Trump’s leadership and vision.”
