There Is Only One Democrat Polling Ahead of Trump in New Survey

In the wake of Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance last week, some Democrats are pushing for an alternative candidate to replace the president. So far, several names have been floated, including VP Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, and Govs. Gavin Newsom, Josh Shapiro, JB Pritzker, Andy Beshear, and Gretchen Whitmer. But according to a new survey, there is only one Democrat that bests former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical matchup.

Former first lady Michelle Obama led Trump, 50 percent to 39 percent, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

“All other hypothetical Democratic candidates either perform similarly to or worse than Biden against Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris hypothetically wins 42% of registered voters to Trump’s 43%. California Governor Gavin Newsom hypothetically wins 39% of registered voters to Trump’s 42%. All other hypothetical Democratic candidates earn between 34% to 39% of potential votes among registered voters,” the survey finds.

Biden and former President Donald Trump, meanwhile, were tied at 40 percent, and voters have unfavorable opinions of both. Only the former first lady receives majority favorability among registered voters.

Obama has repeatedly said she has no interest in running for president, but she is reportedly helping boost Harris.
