Since the 2022 midterm elections, voters have speculated if Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will run for president against President Joe Biden in 2024. Former President Donald Trump announced in November that he would seek the presidency again. A new poll shows which candidate Florida voters would support if they had to choose between Trump and DeSantis in a Republican primary.
A new poll released Tuesday showed DeSantis beating Trump in the state of Florida in a hypothetical GOP Primary match-up. The poll was conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy, Inc.
In the findings, DeSantis received 44 percent of the support, compared to Trump's 39 percent. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley came in third place with 3 percent of Republican support. Twelve percent of voters in the poll said they were undecided.
"DeSantis has yet to officially declare that he is running for president, although he is widely expected to do so after the state's legislative session ends this spring," the Miami Herald's write-up of the poll stated. "In recent weeks, he has embarked on a nationwide book tour that has seen him touting his policy victories in Florida and positioning himself as the best GOP candidate to win a general election next year."
According to Fox News, Mason-Dixon found that DeSantis' approval rating reached 59 percent among registered voters. On the other hand, 39 percent of registered voters in Florida said that they disapprove of the job he's doing. Only 2 percent of voters were unsure. As for Trump, he currently holds a 39 percent favorable rating and 50 percent unfavorable. Only 33 percent of Florida voters view Biden favorably.
Mason-Dixon surveyed 625 registered Florida voters, including 507 registered Republican voters, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 points, which increases to plus or minus 4.4 percentage points when only Republican voters are considered.
This week, the New York Post reported that former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney has "doubled" in the last few weeks, from 5.3 percent to 10.3 percent support. So far, the Republicans who have announced they are running in 2024 are Trump, Haley, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson.
