Border Patrol Seizes Almost $1 Million Worth of Narcotics

Even though the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic has closed the United States-Mexico border to everyday travel, cargo shipments are still allowed to cross the border. That means Border Patrol is still keeping an eye out for illegal activity, especially on the narcotics front.

“Officers at the Laredo Port of Entry have heightened their enforcement strategy when targeting these high-risk commodities, successfully disrupting the flow of narcotics from entering our country,” Port Director Gregory Alvarez, Laredo Port of Entry, said in a statement.

Agents had a successful day on Thursday when they intercepted a shipment containing almost $1 million in narcotics at the World Trade Bridge that separates Laredo, Texas from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.

Agents stopped a 32-year-old Mexican citizen driving a trailer hauling a shipment of car parts for a secondary examination. Canines and images uncovered 198 packages of marijuana inside the shipment. The 4,602.37 pounds of marijuana had a street value of $920,464.

The driver was arrested and Customs and Border Protection seized the narcotics and trailer. The case is now in the hands of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations for further review.
