The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) is currently investigating a shooting that took place early Sunday morning, around 3:20 a.m. local time, along Canal Street, right out the edge of the city's popular French Quarters.
The area was busy following the Bayou Classic, an annual college football game between Grambling State University and Southern University. NOPD Chief Ferguson told NOLA.com that security was beefed up as a result of the Bayou Classic, which allowed officers to be on scene almost immediately.
A total of 11 people were injured as a result, with 10 being transported to local hospitals for treatment. Five victims were taken to University Medical Center and the other five were taken to Tulane Medical Center, Fox 8 reported.The 11th person walked into a hospital for treatment. Two of the victims are in critical condition.

NOPD said they detained an individual near the scene. Police believe the person may have had involvement in the incident but he or she is not under arrest at this time.
Aaron Looney, a spokesman for NOPD, told CNN that when officers arrived on the scene they could hear gunshots and victims were immediately discovered.
