Democrats Take Control of Virginia General Assembly

For the first time in more than two decades, Virginia Democrats have taken control of both chambers of the state legislature, according to election results from the Washington Post.

Contested seats with no incumbent:

District 4 - Republican William Wampler beat Democrat Starla Kiser with 63 percent of the vote.

District 20 - Republican John Avoli won with 58.6 percent of the vote over Democrat Jennifer Lewis.

District 23 - Republican Wendell Walker beat Democrat David Zilles with 63 percent of the vote.

District 25 - Republican Chris Runion beat Democrat Jennifer Kitchen and Independent Janice Allen with 58.2 percent of the vote.

District 28 - Democrat Josh Cole won with 52 percent of the vote over Republican Paul Milde.

District 30 - 

District 62 - Republican Carrie Coyner beat Democrat Lindsey Doughterty with 54 percent of the vote.

District 73 - Democrat Rodney Willett beat Republican Mary Margaret Kastelberg with 52 percent of the vote.

District 80 - Democrat Don Scott won with 66 percent over the vote over Republican James Evans and Ryan Benton.

District 85 - Democrat Alex Askew won with 51 percent over the vote over Republican N.D. Holocomb.

District 87 - Democrat Suhas Subramanyam beat Republican William Drennan with 62 percent of the vote. 

District 91 - Democrat Martha Mugler won with 55 percent over the vote over Republican Colleen Holcomb.

District 96 - Republican Amanda Batten beat Democrat Mark Downey and Independent James Jobe with 53 percent of the vote. 

District 97 - Republican Scott Wyatt beat Democrat Kevin Washington with 56 percent of the vote. 

Seats that ousted incumbents:

District 40 - Democrat Dan Helmer successfully ousted Republican incumbent Tim Hugo with 53 percent of the vote.

District 76 - Democrat Clinton Jenkins successfully ousted Republican Chris jones with 56 percent of the vote.

District 94 - Democrat Shelly Simonds successfully ousted Republican David Yancey with 58 percent of the vote.

Seats that were uncontested:

District 57 - Democrat Sally Hudson

District 78 - Republican James Leftwich 

District 86 - Democrat Ibraheem Samirah

District 89 - Democrat Jerrauld Jones

District 90 - Democrat Joseph Lindsey

District 92 - Democrat Jeion Ward

District 95 - Democrat Marcia Price

Democrats' reaction was anything shy of amazing.

A Parkland father credited gun control as one of the reasons Virginia flipped, a clear nod to Gov. Ralph Northam (D).

Conservatives had a different take on the situation.
