A shooting broke out at 1 a.m. EST in the Oregon District of Dayton, Ohio early Sunday morning just outside of Ned Peppers, a local bar. Officers were on scene rather quickly because they were already in the area conducting their normal patrols.
The gunman acted alone with a ".223 high capacity" rifle with additional magazines, Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley said. He was also wearing protective body armor and a mask over his face, Dayton Daily News reported.
A person at Ned Peppers allegedly grabbed the rifle by the barrel to stop the gunman, at which point he "picked up a handgun and was willing to continue shooting," said Deb Decker, public information officer for Montgomery County.
The shooter was neutralized in less than a minute, Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley told reporters.
According to Dayton Police, 10 people were killed and 26 more were injured.
Authorities at Miami Valley Hospital said they treated 14 patients. Twelve people were released, one remains in critical condition and three more were admitted.
