Special Counsel Robert Mueller is scheduled to testify before the House Judiciary and Intel Committees on July 17th. While Democrats are prepared to use this opportunity to hear directly from Mueller, Republicans are anxious to show how the Special Counsel was used as the Democrats' political pawn.
But before the testimony, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) called Mueller an "anal opening."
“He’s done some irreparable damage to some things and he’s got to answer for them,” Gohmert told POLITICO.
Although Gohmert read Mueller's full report, it did little to tame the animosity he has towards the Special Counsel.
“It reinforced the anal opening that I believe Mueller to be."
Gohmert sits on the House Judiciary Committee and is one of 25 Republicans scheduled to question Mueller on July 17th.
Mueller should anticipate a hotbed of questions from other Republicans, including Reps. Jim Jordan (OH), Matt Gaetz (FL), Devin Nunes (CA) and Andy Biggs (AZ). All four Congressmen have taken issue with the Russia probe since the beginning.
The Special Counsel has said that his report should speak for itself and there's no reason to testify in front of Congress. House Democrats, however, threatened to subpoena Mueller if he didn't cooperate, which is why he reluctantly agreed to testify.
While Democrats want Mueller's testimony to advance impeachment proceedings and secure a White House victory in 2020, how this line of questioning plays out can be detrimental to their cause. Republicans believe this could be a slam dunk for them, showing this was nothing a Democratic witch hunt.
“It becomes reader’s theatre,” Biggs told POLITICO. In his mind, the hearings could backfire on Democrats. “I certainly hope so. I'm looking forward to it."
