The House Judiciary Committee on Monday subpoenaed former White House counsel Don McGahn. Under the subpoena, McGahn has until May 7th to produce all documents relating to Michael Flynn, James Comey and Jeff Sessions. He also has to hand over any documents that show discussions about resignations and/or firings of key officials, including Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
McGahn made headlines when he refused to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller at President Donald Trump's request. Democrats believe he can provide vital insight into the White House's handling of the Mueller investigation and whether or not President Trump attempted to obstruct the investigation, The Washington Times reported.
“Mr. McGahn is a critical witness to many of the alleged instances of obstruction of justice and other misconduct described in the Mueller report,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler said in a statement. “His testimony will help shed further light off the president’s attacks on the rule of law and attempts to cover up those actions by lying to the American people and requesting others do the same.”
Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA), the Committee's ranking member, slammed Nadler's move.
"For the second time in four days, the chairman has issued a subpoena prematurely and contrary to his pledge not 'to issue a subpoena every time we have a disagreement with the administration.' Don McGahn sat for more than 30 hours of interviews with the special counsel’s investigation, and the chairman has answered that with a stunning 36-item subpoena. Instead of looking at material that Attorney General [William] Barr has already made available, Democrats prefer to demand additional materials they know are subject to constitutional and common-law privileges and cannot be produced," Collins told Fox News.
McGahn is scheduled to testify before the House Judiciary Committee on May 21st.
