Freshman Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, has expressed interest in being part of the GOP's leadership. She is interested in running for Republican Conference Chair, which is currently held by Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington State, CNN reported.
Depending on what happens during Tuesday's midterm elections, McMorris Rodgers would run for Majority Whip and Cheney would run for Conference Chair, Newsmax reported. Cheney has told multiple sources on the Hill that she would not run against McMorris Rodgers if it comes down to it.
With Speaker Paul Ryan retiring after this term, politicos are watching GOP leadership to see how things shake out. Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California is expected to run for Speaker. Some anticipate that conservative Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, who also chairs the House Freedom Caucus, will run to replace Ryan.
Cheney is arising star in the Republican Party. She has traveled with Majority Whip Steve Scalise to fundraise in eight hotly contested races ahead of Tuesday's election. According to CNN, members of current GOP leadership have encouraged her to run for Republican Conference Chair, should things go as planned.
Other notable Republican Conference Chairs include Dick Cheney, former President Gerald Ford, 1996 Republican vice-presidential nominee Jack Kemp, former House Speaker John Boehner and Vice President Mike Pence, CNN reported.
Leadership elections will take place Nov. 14th, just a little over a week after midterm elections.
