Rep. Cummings Hospitalized as Wife Ends Bid for Maryland Governor

UPDATE: Cummings's office has released a statement noting that the congressman's hospitalization at Johns Hopkins was due to a bacterial infection in his knee.

Doctors successfully drained the infection. “He is resting comfortably and expects a full recovery,” the statement said.

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) was hospitalized Friday. Shortly before the  news, his wife Rockeymoore announced she was suspending her campaign to challenge Larry Hogan for governor.

“Making a positive and direct contribution to the state of Maryland and to our nation was my greatest motivating factor for stepping into the public arena. Unfortunately, due to personal considerations, I am suspending my bid for governor of Maryland,” she said in an email to supporters.

It is unclear yet as to what led to Cummings's hospitalization. But, last year he dealt with a series of heart issues. In May, he had a “minimally invasive” heart valve replacement. He was supposed to return to Capitol Hill shortly after, but a post-op infection kept him in the hospital for another several months.

Cummings has served in Congress since 1996 and is the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.
