The Taliban Says They Tried to Kill General Mattis Today in Afghanistan

The Taliban carried out an attack in Afghanistan Tuesday they say was intended for Secretary of Defense James Mattis, who landed in Kabul this morning for a series of meetings with local and U.S. officials.

Terrorists targeted Hamid Karzai International Airport with a number of rockets, armed with grenades, and dozens of rounds of bullets. Mattis, whose visit was unannounced, landed just two hours before the assault was launched.

The Taliban and ISIS are both taking credit for a rocket attack on Kabul's airport early Wednesday just hours after U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis landed in Afghanistan for a surprise visit.

A barrage of up to 40 rounds of munitions hit the airport, including 29 rocket-propelled grenades, according to a U.S. military official.

Suicide bombers were reportedly also used.

In August, President Trump announced his strategy for Afghanistan moving forward, vowing to defeat terrorists and protect American interests. He also called for an increase of U.S. troops in the country, but did not give a number.
