Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) will begin treatment for glioblastoma on Monday, his office said in a statement. McCain will return to Arizona on Friday and will stay there until the conclusion of the August recess in early September. Afterwards, he intends on returning to Washington.
“In accordance with the guidance of his physicians, Senator McCain is returning to Arizona to undergo further treatment at Mayo Clinic. On Monday, July 31, he will begin a standard post-surgical regimen of targeted radiation and chemotherapy. During that time, Senator McCain will maintain a work schedule. He plans to return to Washington at the conclusion of the August recess.”
He will undergo what is described as a "standard" regimen of radiation and chemotherapy.
Last Wednesday, McCain shocked the nation when he announced that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer that was discovered following a surgery to remove a blood clot. Despite the diagnosis, McCain returned to Washington less than a week alter to vote on the various healthcare bills. His arrival in the Senate drew a standing ovation, and he delivered an emotional floor speech. He still had visible scars and bandages from his craniotomy less than two weeks prior.
Per his office, McCain will continue to work while he is in Arizona.
