Trump Slams Decision to Appoint Special Counsel

President Trump slammed the appointment of a special counsel to oversee the Russia probe Thursday morning on Twitter.

“With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special councel [sic] appointed!” he wrote.

“Based upon the unique circumstances, the public interest requires me to place this investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command,” Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in a statement announcing the appointment. “A special counsel is necessary in order for the American people to have full confidence in the outcome. Our nation is grounded on the rule of law, and the Public must be assured that government officials administer the law fairly."

Trump followed up by tweeting “This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!”

The president said much the same during a commencement address to the U.S. Coast Guard Wednesday.

“You have to put your head down and fight, fight, fight,” Trump told graduating cadets. “Look at the way I’ve been treated lately, especially by the media. No politician in history — and I say this with great surety — has been treated worse or more unfairly.”
