Garland, you'll remember, was President Obama's pick to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. The GOP-led Congress refused to let him be considered for the seat, however, noting it was unfair to vote on a new justice in an election year. Their maneuvering panned out exceptionally well, as they eventually got conservative judge Neil Gorsuch confirmed instead.
President Trump let Comey go this week via the request of his attorney general and deputy attorney general, who said the FBI director had lost the confidence of the agency. Some Democrats, however, are accusing the White House of firing Comey because his Russia investigation was getting "too close to home" for the president and his associates. Others were quick to point out the Democrats' hypocrisy, considering they had nothing but scorn for Comey just a few months ago.
