Saturday, April 22, is Earth Day. It is also apparently an excuse for yet another anti-Trump march in the nation’s capital. The March for Science – the first of its kind – will be a chance for activists to speak out against the Trump administration’s proposed "unprecedented cuts to the sciences in its proposed 2018 budget," according to Live Science.
A Reddit user first suggested the march and it caught fire, attracting over 1 million followers on social media. In particular, participants will be marching against Trump’s decisions to allow construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, roll back the Clean Power Plan, and threaten to pull out of the Paris climate agreement.
The organizers say the march is not partisan - but it is political.
"Politics and science are intertwined, whether we face a travel ban that restricts the free flow of scientific ideas, changes in education policy that diminish students' exposure to science, or budget cuts that restrict the availability of science for making policy decisions," the organizers said in the statement.
"We will work to become stronger partners with the communities we serve, and to ensure that policymakers understand and appreciate the vital services science provides."
The March for Science is expected to hold marches in nearly 500 communities around the world Saturday, organizers predict.
The D.C. march begins at 9 a.m. Bill Nye the Science Guy – not a real scientist – will be one of the event’s headliners.
