It looks as though team Obama isn't necessarily worried about Mitt Romney when it comes to President Obama's re-election, instead, they're worried about his better half, Ann Romney. Why? She's able to connect with voters on a personal level, something Mitt Romney has struggled to do. Ann Romney has the opportunity to showcase their family and to bring a sense of humor to the campaign trail. She has personal stories to share, whether it's beating breast cancer or living with MS in a positive way. People already know Romney the politician, he's been around for awhile, they want to see a personal side. Politically it is important for the Romney camp to connect on not only the issues but a personal level. Why? He is capable of beating President Obama on the issues, unemployment, energy, etc. but President Obama is still very popular on a personal level with the American public. Romney has to level that playing field and his wife just might get him there.
As Romney closes in on his party’s nomination, Obama campaign officials and strategists view Ann Romney as a wild card in the fall campaign — a skilled and articulate advocate whose full power has yet to be unleashed. If she’s armed with a passionate vision for a Romney White House, the opposition believes she could emerge as a compelling surrogate for her husband around the country.
She has, in fact, recently begun targeting women - a demographic Republicans desperately need - talking about the economy and jobs. "I wish Ann, my wife were here," Mitt Romney told a crowd in Wisconsin Sunday, flagging her efforts. "She’s going across the country and talking with women. We have work to do, to make sure we take our message to the women of America."
The Romney inner circle is well aware of Ann Romney’s potential - but has long resisted any strategy that would separate the couple for extended periods because of the negative impact it has on the candidate.
