So Sad: George Clooney Won't Run for Office

I'm hesitant to share the sort of news that will utterly devastate the Townhall community, but as a journalist, my commitment is to the truth.  Despair:

Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll - two of these past excesses are the reasons George Clooney says he'll never seek political office.

"I f---ed too many chicks and did too many drugs, and that's the truth," the playboy actor recently told Newsweek while discussing his political aspirations.

Clooney, 49, has used his celebrity to bring public attention to war-torn Sudan, raising speculation that one day he might try to run for office. In 2003, the self-described liberal came out against the Iraq war, and in 2008 he supported Barack Obama's campaign for President.

Clooney, who is called the "21st-Century Statesman" in the article, joked that if someone like him wanted to go into politics, they would have admitted to the skeletons in their closet much sooner in life.

"[They] would start from the beginning by saying, 'I did it all. I drank the bong water. Now let's talk about issues.' That's gonna be my campaign slogan: 'I drank the bong water,' " he said.

Clooney may be making a significant miscalculation: His self-identified drawbacks -- promiscuous sex, booze, drugs, etc. -- are considered features, not bugs, in some circles.
