John Hawkins Presents ‘101 Things All Young Adults Should Know’

You know Townhall columnist John Hawkins for his spot on and seriously entertaining lists. While he usually dedicates his time to exposing radical liberalism and political correctness, he recently used his talents to write his first book and offer up some life advice for the millennial generation.

Targeted to 18-30 year olds, 101 Things All Young Adults Should Know is chock full of tips that Hawkins, now 46, wishes he had heard when he was a youngster.

“A lot of the mistakes you make are not because you’re dumb, but because you’re inexperienced,” he explained in an interview with Townhall.

Hawkins's book isn't a lecture. It is an honest telling of his own missteps and a warning for young adults to try and avoid the same ones.

Hawkins recalled a few of his gravest mistakes in our conversation, such as the time he got into some serious credit card trouble. It obviously had an impact on him because he “cut it up and didn’t use another credit card for 20 years,” determined he would not fall into the same hole again.

In order to urge young folks not to obsess over “stuff," Hawkins dedicates his first chapter to friendship.

“At the end of your life, you’re not going to care all that much about the stuff you have,” he said. “What you’re going to care about is people. That’s what makes your life really worth living.”

A few other nuggets of wisdom you'll find in the book include: "Don’t ever respond to somebody when you’re angry,"  “Learning to listen to people will change your relationships for the better,” and "Don't major in minor things."

“If you’re not going to remember it in five years, why waste your time on it?” Hawkins wisely asked.

Oh, and millennials may not appreciate it during their formative years, but their "parents are a lot smarter than you think," Hawkins said.

“You don’t have to make the same dumb mistakes I did,” the author said. “Get ahead of everyone else your age.”
