National Harbor, Maryland - We all watched Thursday as former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney offered a biting critique of Donald Trump and urged voters to choose Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz or John Kasich. A couple of highlights were when the former Massachusetts governor called Trump a bully and condemned his "third grade theatrics." Romney's unprecedented remarks perhaps show just how badly the Republican Party wants anyone but Trump on their 2016 ticket.
Shortly after Romney spoke his mind about the businessman, Trump responded just as bluntly. During a rally in Portland, Maine, he called Romney a "choke artist" and suggested Romney forgot how desperate he was for his support during the 2012 election.
"You can see how loyal he is. He was begging for my endorsement. I could have said, 'Mitt, drop to your knees.' He would have dropped to his knees."
Trump also couldn't resist reminding Romney about the 2012 results, calling the former Massachusetts governor a "failed candidate."
While we can't know for sure how the conversations between Trump and Romney unfolded during the last presidential election, it's perhaps safe to say the former may be exaggerating just a tad. Trump is obviously extremely popular in this race, but would his endorsement at all have helped Romney four years ago? In any case, it's apparent their phone calls today would be much less amicable.
