The future of American power, prosperity, and technological leadership is now up for debate, as a bipartisan backlash against data-center growth gains traction. Democrats have predictably joined the fight against the infrastructure driving America’s next economic era. More troublingly, so have many Republicans, so far propelled by a sophisticated misinformation campaign with foreign roots.
Montana Sen. Tim Sheehy recently pointed out just how far the anti-data center movement has drifted, warning that politicians who fail to understand critical economic infrastructure have repeatedly helped destroy it, almost always while claiming to protect the American people. He pointed to timber mills, mines, factories, and now data centers.

"First they killed our timber mills, then our mines, then our factories - now data centers," Sen. Sheehy wrote on X. "Every good-paying, middle-class employment powerhouse has been systematically murdered by globalist and communist lobbying in America sending those jobs, that industry, and all of its economic impact overseas."
"Every politician calling for the end of data centers is also calling for the destruction of the future jobs they create and the end of Netflix, X, YouTube, Instagram, Spotify, Google, Amazon, and every app you actually use," he added. "They all run on data centers."
The irony is glaring. The movement not only echoes the 19th-century Luddites who tried to halt the economic progress reshaping their society for the better, but many of the same voices that lament the offshoring of American jobs also support moratoria on AI data-center construction. The very policies most likely to send those jobs elsewhere. Capital, computing capacity, and the companies that rely on both will not simply wait for Washington or a local zoning board to become more accommodating.
And the damage would not be confined to construction crews, technicians, or data-center operators. AI data centers are the physical foundation of the entire AI economy, from consumer chatbots and search engines to enterprise software, scientific research, and military applications. If America blocks the infrastructure AI companies need to train, build, and deploy their systems, the companies and capital behind them may follow computing capacity abroad.
That would not simply cost the U.S. individual projects, it would weaken the American technology sector that remains the backbone of the nation’s economy, national security, and global leadership.
So far, data and logic have done little to turn the tide. What should have remained a series of local debates over resources and land use has grown into a sweeping national backlash, with both Democrat- and Republican-led states issuing moratoria. Even Republicans who typically champion growth, investment, and domestic production have adopted something closer to the Bernie Sanders approach: broad government bans on a critical piece of the modern economy. The free market, apparently, is admirable right up until it requires a new building.
Opponents cite concerns over water and electricity use, noise, and uncertain local economic benefits. Others attribute the backlash to distrust of Big Tech or argue that technology CEOs have failed to make their case to the public. There is some truth in that. But AI companies have, in many ways, made the case, and roughly 75 percent of Americans may simply not want to hear it.
Why so many people believe government can solve this problem, rather than make it worse, as it so often has, remains a mystery.
