The border crisis is largely a thing of the past, but there’s still work to be done to solidify the security in America’s southern backyard, according to National Border Patrol Council President Paul Perez.
“I think the main thing that we need to accomplish is codifying in the law, the policy changes that President Trump put into place so that we never have to endure what we endured under the four years of the Biden's chaos,” Perez told Townhall on Thursday.
He addressed the Republican midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday, and he explained that his goal was to make sure voters knew about the risks of letting border security slip away.

“We're here to remind the voters of what could happen if you allow Democrats to take control. We saw what they operated with. We saw their playbook under the Biden administration, and that's exactly what they're campaigning on. They want to eliminate borders,” Perez said. “They want to allow millions of people to come back to this country unvetted.”
However, Perez noted that the cartels have tried to “adapt” now that the U.S. has more resources invested at the border.
“The criminal cartels are gonna exploit everything they can. They're gonna look for every loophole,” Perez said, noting that there has been more “attempts” by the cartels to “try to get their illegal cargo across.”
“They're gonna look for every opportunity because money is the only thing they care about. They don't care about their human cargo. They don't care about anything other than making money,” he added.
The union leader added that although cartels using drones is “not brand new,” he said that “their abilities are getting better because of what they're doing to each other.”
“They're weaponizing them against other cartels, their enemy cartels, and against the Mexican government,” he said.
“So the drone and counter drone technology that we have in the United States is something that we have been utilizing to make sure that we can protect our communities, protect our law enforcement and military that's on the border,” he continued. “But it's an evolving technology, we're getting a lot more technology with the funding from the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill,’ so we're able to counter anything that the cartels throw our way.”
