Update: The art exhibit described below has turned out to be a hoax perpetrated by a Yale student and originally written up by the Yale Daily News.

A senior art major at Yale will display blood samples from her multiple abortions brought on after artificially inseminating herself in an upcoming art show sponsored by the university.

An article by the Yale Daily News about her work begins, “Aliza Shvarts ’08 wants to make a statement.”

According to the piece, “The display of Schvarts’ project will feature a large cube suspended from the ceiling of a room in the gallery of Green Hall. Schvarts will wrap hundreds of feet of plastic sheeting around this cube; lined between layers of the sheeting will be the blood from Schvarts’ self-induced miscarriages mixed with Vaseline in order to prevent the blood from drying and to extend the blood throughout the plastic sheeting. Schvarts will then project recorded videos onto the four sides of the cube. These videos, captured on a VHS camcorder, will show her experiencing miscarriages in her bathrooom tub, she said. Similar videos will be projected onto the walls of the room.”

Townhall was alerted to the project through a press release issued by Students for Life of America.

"Why did the school officials and advisors not intervene with Shvarts' project?" Kristan Hawkins, SFLA Executive Director asked. "By letting Shvarts complete her 'art' project, Yale allowed Shvarts to put herself in serious medical risk. The student even remarked in the article that she did not see the need in consulting a physician prior to self-abortions because everything she used was legal."

SFLA is calling on Planned Parenthood, NARAL and NOW to condemn the project.

“Abortion should never be trivialized as a matter of ‘art’,” Hawkins said.
