Abortion and Identity Politics Are Harris's Pathways to Victory

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

Abortion is the Democrats' kryptonite to the Republicans. It worked in 2022 and they feel they can do it again in 2024. Reproductive rights are not merely due to the health of the woman; they are largely due to the finances of the woman.

Their target is the "Sallys" of the nation - white and suburban women between the ages of 19 and 45.

What about Black women? They are a lock for Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris is likely to eclipse the 95% Black women's vote she and Biden received in 2020. Soon, the Harris-Walz ticket could resort to the Biden mantra for Black people: "If you have to think who you are going to vote for, then you are not really Black."

On the other hand, "Sally" is concerned about her ability to live comfortably or to merely survive. Nothing is more important to her. After all, no one will help Sally if she cannot make ends meet, if her quality-of-life changes for the worse.

Sally leaves the nation's wars and economy in the hands of others. She must take care of her own business, or else.

Losing the ability to have an abortion affects Sally financially. She cannot afford to take care of another child. When talking about the abortion issue, the GOP must be very sensitive to the root causes of Sally's concerns.

But Sally should know that the Democrats are lying yet again. Lying, distorting the truth, and hoodwinking Americans are at the heart of the Democrats' playbook since they have failed miserably when it comes to "Peace and Prosperity" (as they fund two wars and the price tag of their failed Bidenomics).

First, is it possible to pass a bill on abortion, maybe an attempt to codify Roe vs. Wade?

Democrats and Republicans cannot vote to change the current federal law. Sixty votes are needed in the Senate. It would be a cold day in hell before one side would have that kind of support. The last time was 50 years ago when the Democrats had 60 Senators.

But even if it passed Congress, would it become the law of the land?

The Supreme Court already ruled that it would be unconstitutional to have a federal law on abortion - a Roe vs. Wade type of bill, for instance. The court said that the states must decide the issue for themselves. And the states are doing just that.

Over the decades, several bills Congress has passed have been ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Biden knows all about them. They include the Line-Item Veto, Balance Budget, and Flag Desecration bill, which would all require constitutional amendments to become laws. A simple vote of Congress would not suffice.

For Harris and the charlatan Democrats - who already know this - they must push for a constitutional amendment on the abortion question if they truly want to bring back Roe vs. Wade across the nation. A difficult task, as the last constitutional amendment was passed nearly 35 years ago after decades of deliberation.

But why does the truth matter? Ask former Florida Governor Lawton Chiles. Chiles beat Jeb Bush for the state's governorship in 1994. Lying by pro-Chiles forces played an integral role in his victory. After the election they admitted they lied. But by then, Chiles was already the governor and Jeb was not.

What was the big lie?

Chiles's campaign claimed that Bush would cut Medicare if elected. This was not only a lie on substance but also impossible. Medicare is a federal program, and a state governor has no control or influence over its application.

However, this petrified the senior citizens of Florida who are a huge voting block in the state. Even those who liked Jeb Bush simply could not vote for him because of this singular issue. Bush lost in 1994 but came back to win in 1998.

Today, we see the same Democratic playbook. A certain contingent of Democrats does not care how they win as long as they win.

Let's take a quick look at the Biden-Harris record:

False promises of forgiving student loans

Student loan forgiveness? Biden-Harris knew they could not do that, but it won them votes in 2020. For starters, they had no way to pay for it. A Democrat-controlled Congress never even voted on the measure. Most of Biden's independent efforts have been ruled unconstitutional.

COVID-19 deaths

Biden once said that "any president allowing over 200,000 deaths to COVID should not be president." During his term, Biden had over 600,000 COVID-related deaths and he remained as president.

Flipping on key issues

Harris has flipped on key issues faster than a chef at IHOP flips pancakes. The Harris record includes amnesty for illegal immigrants, reparations for slavery, and defunding the police. These were all issues she once supported, but not now. We can add to this list her newfound support for fracking, not taxing tips, and maybe even a "border wall." Yes, she is trying hard to sound like a Republican.

The border crisis

Harris, the so-called border Czar, has repeatedly proclaimed that our border with Mexico was secure. Yet 10-15 million illegal immigrants have invaded our country during the Biden-Harris administration. According to a report in the New York Post, today, migrants make up 75% of the arrests in New York City.

The heart of the so-called border deal that Congress recently failed to pass was truly meant to give money back to the cities and states that have been forced to pay out billions of dollars to give food, shelter, healthcare and other social services to those migrants who broke U.S. law by entering the country illegally. It did not shut down the border. If passed, it would have still allowed illegals to enter America.

Hoodwinking Americans

Democrats would like to make you think they are not in the White House. They know that generally Americans feel our country is heading in the wrong direction. But Democrats do not want you to know that they are the ones leading us in the wrong direction. They have been in power for 12 of the last 16 years, including the last four years.

The Democrats' "Trump cards" are abortion and identity politics. If Harris wins in November, the nation should recognize that we will continue to go in the wrong direction - towards, eventually, the abyss.
