Democrats Nuke the 'Norms'

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

For years, Democrats have claimed former President Donald Trump is a "threat to Democracy" (America is a Republic) because he allegedly busts through norms and tears down institutions. It turns out, and in typical fashion, that was all projection.

The left has been working tirelessly since Trump ran for office in 2016 to defeat him. Not through elections, which Democrats claim are sacred, but through political persecution in the Deep State and the courts.

They engaged in Russiagate, launched a special counsel investigation (that came up empty), impeached Trump twice for non-existent crimes, have endlessly lied about his record and much more. In the past two years, far-left and politically motivated prosecutors have filed criminal charges against him at the state and federal level, hoping to sear him with the official title of "convicted felon."

This week, they finally reached their goal and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg won gold in the Get Trump Olympics.

"President Donald Trump was found guilty by a jury on all charges brought against him. In August 2023, Trump was charged by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg with 34 counts of Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree — felonies," Townhall reported Thursday.

Blowing through all due process norms previously afforded to defendants, Judge Juan Merchan — whose daughter raised millions of dollars for Democrats off of the case — instructed the jury they didn't have to find an underlying crime or come to a unanimous decision.

No requirement for a unanimous conclusion? "Astounding," "unprecedented" and "highly unusual" were just some of the ways legal experts, constitutional scholars, criminal defense attorneys and former prosecutors described the situation.

Further, Merchan allowed Bragg to prosecute an alleged federal election crime inside his New York state courtroom. The Supreme Court has determined states cannot enforce or prosecute federal election law and, in fact, the Department of Justice previously passed on prosecuting Trump and his team for the crime Bragg alleged…because it doesn't exist.

"When you impose meaningful search parameters, the truth emerges: the charges against Trump are obscure and nearly entirely unprecedented. In fact, no state prosecutor – in New York, or Wyoming, or anywhere – has ever charged federal election laws as a direct or predicate state crime, against anyone, for anything. None. Ever. Even putting aside the specifics of election law, the Manhattan DA itself almost never brings any case in which falsification of business records is the only charge," CNN legal analyst Elie Honig writes in New York Magazine.

Now, we wait for sentencing. If you think jail time is out of the question because Trump is a "first-time offender," you're being delusional. They've come this far to stop him from reentering the White House, why would they stop now?

The sentencing hearing is scheduled just four days ahead of the Republican National Convention where Trump is set to accept the party's nomination for president. His opponent, President Joe Biden, wants everyone to blindly accept this result and stop pointing out the gravely anti-American nature of the "trial" and potential jailing of his opponent.

"It's reckless, it's dangerous, it's irresponsible for anyone to say this was rigged," Biden said from the White House.

During remarks in New York City Friday morning, President Trump said, "This is bigger than me, bigger than my presidency."

That is exactly correct. Prosecutors like Bragg exist in cities from coast to coast and they're determined to get the "justice" they want to fundamentally change the country. We're at a turning point in history for America, and the road ahead is dark.
