Biden ‘24

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

I read some chatter, most of it from Republicans, that the Democrats might replace Joe Biden on the 2024 ticket.  Let’s not delude ourselves, it ain’t gonna happen.  As things currently stand (more on caveats later), Biden will be the Democratic Party’s nominee.  The sun will rise tomorrow in the east, and Biden will be the nominee in 2024.  Those are absolutes, and I’m more confident of the latter than I am the former.  I’m only going to waste this one sentence on Marianne Williamson; no chance.  A Biden no-show is only around because the media needs something to talk about and pundits want something to write about.  But I’m in Thailand and I’m not trying to sell anything but three totally unrelated books.  Biden in ‘24.

And here’s why:

1.  A modern American political party does not replace a sitting President if he wants to run for a second term (and he always does).  Period.  It doesn’t matter how incompetent he has been, he gets the nomination for a second term if that is his lust.  His power and influence are too strong.  Two examples.

In 1980, Jimmy Carter had been every bit as inept as Biden has been so far.  There was talk of a Teddy Kennedy challenge to Carter.  And Kennedy (despite Chappaquiddick) was far more popular than any possible Democratic challenger to Biden is today.  Early on, somebody asked Carter about Kennedy contesting him for the nomination.  Carter’s response was, “If he tries, I’ll whip his a**.”  Some aide tried to soften Carter’s words a little, but the President replied, in effect, that he meant exactly what he said, “I’ll whip his a**.” Carter was renominated.

Pat Buchanan challenged George Bush in 1992 for the Republican nomination.  Many Republicans, mainly Reaganites, were greatly disenchanted with “read my lips” George’s broken promises and weak, bungling performance as President after the Gulf War.  The closest Buchanan got was 38% of the vote in the New Hampshire primary.  Bush easily won renomination, and of course, lost the Presidency handily to an untested, unknown Arkansas governor.

You don’t remove a sitting President from the ticket, regardless of how bad he is.  It isn’t done.

2.  Why would the Democrats drop Biden?  He has given them everything they want.  He’s raised taxes.  He’s got a useless war in Ukraine that is hurting America.  There has been high inflation and rising interest rates.  He has certainly been on board with the climate cultists, trying to destroy the fossil fuel industry.  He is 100% pro-abortion, transgenderism, and child mutilation.  The southern border is wide open and letting in millions of future Democratic Party voters.  The American military is becoming a joke (no fault of the rank and file).  What has he done that the New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, or MSNBC have criticized him for?  So he didn’t go to East Palestine; so what?  Ohio is a Republican state, so no sense wasting time there.  He did go to Ukraine and that is far more important to Democrats.

What has Biden done that would cause the Democratic Party to WANT to replace him?  He has appeased the far-left, radical wing of the party—the only wing that still remains—at every turn.  They aren’t going to risk nominating somebody else who might muck things up.  They are getting exactly what they want.

3.  They…um…won the 2020 election with him, why not the 2024 election as well?  Especially since the Republicans are doing absolutely nothing to make sure next year’s election is more secure and CAN’T be stolen.  Whether they intend to or not, Mitch McConnell, Mitt Romney, Ronna McDaniel, Paul Ryan and every other RINO leave the impression they would much rather have Biden re-elected than see a Trump victory.  And that may be their attitude towards Ron DeSantis, too, who is also probably a little too conservative and pro-America for Mitch and the RINO gang.

Now, if they could get an establishment Republican, like Nikki Haley, at the top of the ticket, that might raise Mitch up from his coffin.  Otherwise, McConnell and McDaniel couldn’t care less if the Democrats steal the Presidency again next year.  If they do care, why aren’t they doing something to protect the voting process?  They aren’t.  Because they would rather have Biden—one of their own—than an outsider like Trump or DeSantis.  The Democrats know that Mitch is happy with Biden.  If the Democratic establishment in Washington wants Biden, and if the Republican establishment in Washington wants Biden, then Biden it will be.  With Ronna McDaniel’s re-election as RNC Chair, we saw exactly what the Washington Republican Establishment thinks of its base’s desires.  Do you think the Washington Democratic Party Establishment cares more what its peasant class might want?

Biden will be the Democratic nominee.  Game, set, and match.  There are only two matters that could disrupt this.  One, if Biden does have a serious, major health crisis which prohibits him from being the nominee, then clearly they would have to replace him.  Or, two, if some serious Covid-19 type catastrophe struck the country and produced a tremendous backlash by the people against Biden, the Democrats then might consider someone else.  But this is why I wrote, in the first paragraph, “as things currently stand.”  If Biden isn’t much worse, health-wise, than he is now, and if the country isn’t in a demonstrably more horrific condition than presently exists, there is absolutely no way Biden will be rejected as the Democratic nominee in 2024.  No way.
