The Seinfeld Impeachment

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

It was an impeachment about nothing.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi called Trump a "clear and present danger" to justify the impeachment. Yet, the Senate will not take up the impeachment or have any discussion of removing him from office until after he will have already left office. What kind of "clear and present danger" is that?

Democrats claimed, in their articles of impeachment, that President Trump "willfully made statements that, in context, encouraged — and foreseeably resulted in — lawless action at the Capitol, such as: "if you don't fight like hell you're not going to have a country anymore."

Furthermore, habitual fabulist Adam Schiff said in his floor remarks, "One week ago, the president incited an insurrection against Congress to prevent the peaceful transition of power."

These allegations of Trump's alleged "incitement" during his January 6 speech came hours after the Washington Post reported that the FBI had information of plans of "war" and violent acts days before the president made his speech and never notified the appropriate authorities in Congress or the White House.

If this had been discussed and planned well before Trump's speech, how could that speech be incitement? You can't incite something that was already in the making.

But these are facts and logic. They are irrelevant.

This impeachment was about nothing, which is the perfect coda to the Pelosi-led House of Representatives role in the Trump era.

From the election of 2018 when they made the case to regain power in the House, through their failed investigations, pathetic Ukraine phone call impeachment, and their lackluster performance this past election day, this Congress has stood for one thing and one thing only: Opposing Trump.

So, it's fitting they send Trump off with another, meaningless act that makes no difference to the American people other than to further divide us and pit friend against friend, parent against child, and husband against wife.

This is all they have.

It's been a Congress about nothing, so why not keep the streak going?

Want further proof that Congress isn't serious about this Potemkin village impeachment? Look at the congressmen chosen to manage the Senate trial that may never happen.

There's Rep. Eric Swalwell, a man who's facing his own ethics investigation over a pretty embarrassing foreign collusion with a Chinese communist spy.

There's also Rep. Jamie Raskin, a man who personally stood on the House floor to object to electoral college results in 2017.

And Rep. Ted Lieu, a man who... well... come on... Ted Lieu?

You get the point.

If the Democrats were serious about this process, they'd chose serious individuals to take up the arguments.

This is a fiasco. It means nothing.

Except this. It reveals exactly what you need to know about Democrats.

As usual, CNN's Don Lemon said the quiet part out loud last night.

"If you are on that side, you need to think about the side you're on. I am never on the side of the Klan. Principled people, conservative or liberal, never on the Klan side. Principled people, conservative or liberal, never on the Nazi side. Principled people who are conservative or liberal, never on the side that treats their fellow Americans as less than, that says your fellow Americans should not exist ... that sides with slavery."

"If you voted for Trump, you voted for the person who the Klan supported. You voted for the person who Nazis support. You voted for the person who the alt-right supports. You voted for the person who incited a crowd to go into the Capitol and potentially take the lives of lawmakers ... You voted on that side, and the people in Washington are continuing to vote on that side."

There it is.

Democrats' hostility to Trump was (and remains) not actually about Trump. It's about you. They hate you for voting for him, and they will not be satisfied until you repent, reform, and fall in line.

The impeachment was about nothing, but, at the same time, it's about the only thing to take away from these final tumultuous days of the Trump presidency.
