While on vacation last week, my husband and I visited places with inspiring natural beauty. We love nature, believing it is God’s handiwork on display. Only He could have created such extraordinary complexity and diversity with awesome precision connecting land, sea, and sky into one life-sustaining system. His perfection dispels any notion that “Mother Nature” just randomly appeared with no master plan.
Then, at the end of our nature vacation, I received a “ding.” (Explained in Vol. 22 as “the ‘sound’ of a theme or verse(s) popping into my brain about which I feel ‘called’ to write.”)
The ding was only one word, “majesty” – defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “sovereign power, authority, or dignity.”
Therefore, I feel compelled to explore this word as it appears in the Word of God. What follows are some selected passages beginning with the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible in the order that chapters appear. (I added the bold for emphasis.)
Recommended
Starting in Exodus, God’s majesty is recognized and praised in war:
Your right hand, Lord, was majestic in power. Your right hand, Lord, shattered the enemy. In the greatness of your majesty you threw down those who opposed you. You unleashed your burning anger; it consumed them like stubble (Exodus 15:6-7).
Next, a verse from 1 Chronicles that perfectly defines and summarizes God’s majesty:
Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all (1 Chronicles 29:11).
Out of the north he comes in golden splendor; God comes in awesome majesty (Job 37:22).
To complement Job’s passage, I again recommend listening to the song: “Our God Is An Awesome God” first recommended in Vol. 24.
In Psalms, there are several mentions of His majesty:
Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens (Psalm 8:1).
The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure (Psalm 93:1).
Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever (Psalm 111:3).
To make known to the sons of men His mighty acts, And the glorious majesty of His kingdom (Psalm 145:12).
In Isaiah, the prophet warns the Israelites about the coming of the “Day of the Lord”:
Go into the rocks, hide in the ground from the fearful presence of the Lord and the splendor of his majesty! The eyes of the arrogant will be humbled and human pride brought low; the Lord alone will be exalted in that day (Isaiah 2:10-11).
Our last Hebrew Bible “majesty” verse is from Micah. Among Christians, the “He” references a Messianic prophecy written about 700 years before the birth of Christ:
He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth. And he will be our peace (Micah 5:4-5).
New Testament “Majesty” Verses
In the New Testament, the message is clear — God’s majesty is manifested in and through Jesus Christ.
The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven (Hebrews 1:3).
For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying,"This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased" (2 Peter 1:16-17).
To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy- to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen (Jude 1:24-25).
Finally, when I lived in the Washington, D.C. area, I often listened to Jack Hayford’s radio ministry on WAVA-FM. (Owned by Salem Media, the parent company of Townhall.) Hayford wrote the popular hymn “Majesty,” and it was his show’s theme music. Thus, when I was “dinged” with the word “majesty,” the song also “played.”
Then, when reading about the “birth” of the “Majesty” hymn for this study, and I was struck by Hayford writing:
“Majesty” is also a statement of the fact that our worship, when begotten in spirit and in truth, can align us with His Throne in such a way that His Kingdom authority flows to us – to overflow us, free us, and channel through us.”
Ponder that message as you listen to “Majesty” — and especially the next time you are immersed in or awed by His majestic natural creations as He channels through you.
