One of the suspects, Kirby Rankin, was reportedly out on bond after being convicted of a violent attack in a grocery store parking lot this past January. Rankin pleaded guilty to pushing and punching a 57-year-old woman in the face, before brandishing a firearm and threatening to shoot her.
Police arrived at the Cincinnati home around 1 PM one Thursday, August 6, after the mother showed up at an urgent care, claiming her son was kidnapped. They found the deceased child duct-taped and shoved in a closet, along with the two roommates, biological men identifying as female. All three individuals were taken in immediately for questioning.
Detectives were horrified by the scene. "In my 21 years of law enforcement experience, this is probably one of the most disturbing examples of child abuse that I've witnessed: physical beatings and blunt force injuries from striking devices on the face, torso, back, and upper and lower extremities. Impact injuries to the back of the head," said Kyle Smith, a Cincinnati Police detective who testified at the arraignments.
Smith said the boy was also found with severe burn marks and that there was evidence of repeated drowning attempts.
William's exact cause of death has not yet been released, and a grand jury is deliberating whether to send the suspects to trial for murder and child endangerment.
