HOUSTON (BP) -- The National Fellowship of Hispanic Southern Baptist Churches will lead Hispanic Baptists to mobilize before, during and after the SBC's June 11-12 annual meeting in Houston.

Hispanic churches and volunteers will serve in the Crossover Houston initiative "Por Amor a Houston" (in English, "Loving Houston"). Local Hispanic churches are planning a range of activities as well as mass evangelism events in Hispanic communities. For more information, go to Por Amor a Houston.

According to U.S. Census from 2010, Houston was the largest city in Texas. The Hispanic population in Harris County, where Houston is located, had grown to 1.7 million (44 percent of total population) by 2010. While the majority are Mexican, all Latin American countries and Spain are represented among Houston's residents.

Many Hispanics in Houston are Americans, hailing from families who have been there for generations. Other Hispanics there have recently arrived and are undocumented. Hispanic Baptist leaders see all of them as part of the harvest God is presenting to Southern Baptists this summer.

Hispanic leaders and volunteers will gather June 9 for the Celebracion de Avance Hispano (Hispanic Advance Celebration). The SBC's LifeWay Christian Resources, Internatonal Mission Board, North American Mission Board and GuideStone Financial Resources are among the event's sponsors and will provide workshops, dinner and a worship celebration. The celebration will be from 5-9:30 p.m. on Sunday (June 9) in Rooms 351, 360, 371 and Grand Ballroom C on Level 3 of the George R. Brown Convention Center. www.sbcannualmeeting.net for more information.

The fellowship will have a business meeting from noon to 2 p.m. on Monday, June 10, at Primera Iglesia Bautista de Houston at 13380 Korenek St. in Houston, followed by a time of fellowship and exhibitions from diverse ministries from 5-6 p.m. and dinner and worship celebration from 6:30—9 p.m.

The Hispanic fellowship will hold its Sixth National Congress on Aug. 2-3 in Nashville, Tenn., under a main theme of "Modeling Values in the Family." Samuel Otero, family counselor and evangelist from Texas, will be the featured speaker.

Among the topics for the many workshops during the congress are church recreation for the family, domestic violence, treating addictions, singles ministry, purity in marriage, daily temptations and pastoral family.

The congress will meet at Haywood Baptist Church, 225 Haywood Lane in Nashville. For more information, go to www.confraternidad.org or go to the page on Facebook of the Confraternidad Nacional de Iglesias Hispanas Bautistas del Sur.
