“There has never been in my lifetime, since we got rid of the poll tax and all the voter Jim Crow burdens on voting, the determined effort to limit a franchise that we see today,” Clinton said at Campus Progress’s annual conference in Washington… "Why should we disenfranchise people forever once they've paid their price?" Clinton said. "Because most of them in Florida were African Americans and Hispanics and would tend to vote for Democrats, that's why."
What Clinton failed to point out is that voting is a serious responsibility. And the GOP proposal expects voters to exhibit a certain amount of their own responsibility, weather that means registering ahead of time and not procrastinating (which Obama publicly endorsed at his last press conference when he encouraged Congress to be like his two daughters who “finish their homework a day ahead of time.”) or living and abiding by the laws and legislation that have been enacted by previously appointed representatives who were voted upon. The point is, to be able to enjoy the right and responsibility of voting you must be able to exhibit some smidgeon of personal responsibility. While everyone is given the opportunity to vote, some people revoke that right through certain actions. This is not racism. It’s called being a responsible American citizen.
