Wendy Davis Has Raised $1 Million Since Filibuster?!

Since last month’s abortion filibuster, Wendy Davis has become a fundraising magnet. As we have all read by now, back in June Ms. Davis attempted to filibuster the vote on a bill that would restrict abortions in the state of Texas to 20 weeks. She became a liberal spokeswoman for the right to choose overnight. With a huge group of liberals behind her now, it is no surprise that the State Senator would be able to rake in the funds.

According to figures that her campaign expects to report to the Texas Ethics Commission, the Fort Worth Democrat raised $933,000 between June 17 and June 30. Counting money left over from 2012, she ended the reporting period with more than $1 million in the bank.

In just two weeks she raised almost a million dollars!? This would not be nearly as concerning had Ms. Davis’ camp not mentioned that she is giving thought to a potential run for governor. What anyone in campaigns knows is that it is all about the fundraising. Being able to post these kinds of numbers when she hasn’t even begun a campaign makes her an obvious choice for the Democrats. Being able to raise this much money in such a short period of time makes her a perfect candidate to run for the governor’s seat.

Luckily though, the most likely candidate for the Republicans is still managing to out raise Wendy Davis. In the same period that Wendy Davis was able to raise nearly $1 million, Greg Abbott, the Texas State Attorney General, was able to raise $4.8 million. Abbott now totes more than $20 million in the bank for his run.

Although Abbott is clearly out-raising Davis, it is quite alarming to see a Texas Democrat who is pro-choice make this kind of money in such a short period of time. What seems to be most likely though is that Wendy Davis will start to fade. Her 15 minutes are almost up and she had better try to raise as much money as she can while she still has the spotlight. Let’s not forget that Texas has not had a Democrat hold statewide office since 1994 and it would be very difficult for this to change, especially with Wendy Davis on the ticket.
