New Jersey Judge Rules Ted Cruz Eligible To Run For President

A judge in New Jersey has ruled that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is indeed a natural-born citizen and is therefore eligible to be on the New Jersey ballot. Cruz, who was born in Calgary while his father was working there, is an American citizen via his mother's American citizenship.

Because Canada has a jus soli ('right of the soil') policy regarding citizenship, anyone born on Canadian soil, regardless of the immigration status of their parents, is a Canadian citizen. Cruz renounced his Canadian citizenship (which he was reportedly unaware of) in 2014.

New Jersey's Republican and Democratic primaries will take place on June 7.
