Former U.S. Senate candidate Ken Buck called efforts to balance the nation's budget a moral struggle, and he said passing a federal balanced budget amendment is the most important step toward ending deficit spending.

"What we have bought with our debt and deficit is not just a fiscal challenge," he said. "It is a moral catastrophe. It is poisonous to our human potential. It is lethal to what Ronald Reagan called the American experiment."

The Weld District Attorney spoke to a group of about 200 people Monday for about an hour — spending much of that time in a question-and-answer session — at the Beckman Learning Center on the campus of Colorado Christian University. The Centennial Institute, a conservative think tank at the university, hosted the event.

Buck, who lost to U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., in a closely contested Senate race in November, is a national co-chairman of the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based organization Pass the Balanced Budget Amendment, a grass-roots effort to pass a federal balanced budget.
