Several U.S. military officials are pushing a proposal to keep the number of troops in Afghanistan at surge levels through the fall of 2012, when the full American military withdrawal is scheduled to take place, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

This would be a shift from the current plan, which calls for a gradual departure of troops set to begin next month, and comes as the White House is floating proposals for a schedule of larger than expected drawdowns.

According to the Journal report, military officials hope to avoid pulling troops out in the summer, traditionally the heaviest period of fighting. Keeping forces in place would also allow a greater focus on eastern tribal areas near the Pakistan border.
