Why the Cairo Speech Was So Sad

What was the biggest suprise of Election Day?

It appears that President Barack Obama decided not to incorporate any of the points on American-Muslim relations I included in my last column, a speech I suggested he give in Cairo to the Muslim world.

Nevertheless the president made some courageous points, and an honest appraisal of his speech needs to note them. For example, telling an audience in Cairo and presumably hundreds of millions of Muslims elsewhere that America's "bond is unbreakable" with Israel was courageous and important.

So the speech was not bad.

But it was sad.

It was extremely sad that it was necessary for anyone, let alone an American president, to tell Muslims that the Holocaust occurred, that "6 million Jews were killed," and that "denying that fact is baseless, it is ignorant, and it is hateful." There is no other audience on earth to whom that would have to be said.

Incidentally, wouldn't one think that an American president feeling the need to condemn Holocaust-denial before a world Muslim audience would be worthy of comment? Yet, such is the soft bigotry of low expectations that dominates world news media views of the Muslim world, that I did not see one mainstream media comment on this extraordinary fact.

I did, however, see Tom Brokaw ask this incredible question of President Obama after the latter's visit to the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald: "What can the Israelis learn from your visit to Buchenwald and what should they be thinking about their treatment of Palestinians?"

To his credit, President Obama immediately responded: "Well, look, there's no equivalency here." Continued...

Dear Taft and Takeback
Dear Takeback: Thank you.
Dear Taft: What racism? I see Arabs every day and they're the same race I am.
The so-called "Palestinians" are not second class citizens of Israel, because they're not citizens of Israel.
Gaza is not a ghetto and if anybody was herded there, it was the Jews who were herded OUT.
The Israelis only bomb Gaza because the Gazans spent years shooting rockets at them.
The British and American air forces bombed German and Japanese cities during World War II, making far less effort to avoid killing civilians than the Israelis do. Do you see any similarity with the Nazis there? Do you see a similarity with the Nazis with the Arab states' treatment of the so-called "Palestinians?" Jordan kept the Palestinians (their fellow Arabs) rotting in refugee camps for 22 years, then drove them out in the Black September Massacre. Lebanon shelled Palestinian refugee camps, again, their fellow Arabs, in 2006. Israel is the only country that has offered the "Palestinians" a second homeland.
I happen to believe that the Palestinians are in grave danger of genocide FROM THEIR OWN GENUS!!!! You watch and see what happens if they ever get their second autonomous homeland.
If they ever succeed in wiping out Israel, G-d forbid, they will start on each other, Hamas against Fatah, Sunni against Shi'ite, who knows who against who knows who, and they will eat each other up like the Kilkenny cats!
If Obama wants the Israelis to sit down quietly and let themselves be murdered, I will not support him.
