'The Most Sweeping Ethics Reform in History'?

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Barack Obama promised during his campaign to "clean up both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue" with "the most sweeping ethics reform in history." He declared that his administration would "have the toughest ethics laws of any administration in history." But shouldn't that moral commitment extend to all of those he appoints, too?

Recently, many people were nominated by Obama for high-ranking positions in his administration. Six of them were involved in tax evasion or other shady deals.

First, there was Bill Richardson for commerce secretary. Second, there was William J. Lynn III, slated for the No. 2 spot at the Defense Department. Third, there was Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner's appointment. Fourth, there was Nancy Killefer's nomination as the government's first chief performance officer. Fifth, there was former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, who would have led the Department of Health and Human Services. Sixth, there was the nomination of Rep. Hilda Solis for labor secretary.

And now we have lucky No. 7. Obama has nominated David Ogden to be the deputy attorney general, the second person in command in the Justice Department. According to the American Family Association, as an attorney in private practice, Ogden has filed briefs opposing parental notification before a minor's abortion, the Children's Internet Protection Act and the Child Protection and Obscenity Enforcement Act. He also has litigated many obscenity and pornography cases on behalf of clients such as the American Civil Liberties Union, Playboy, Penthouse and the largest distributor of hard-core pornographic movies.

Am I missing something? Remember when tax evasion was a crime? Remember when porn was bad? Remember when ethics actually mattered in our choices for politicians? Remember when there were expected moral standards for leaders? Remember when politicians were role models? (Now I'm dating myself!)

Call me Pollyannaish, but I believe leadership should be exemplary. I believe leadership should be above reproach. And if Obama can't find ethical criteria for choosing other politicians, then let me pass along some advice from our Founding Fathers.

Ethics (the practice of morality) is the foundation of a healthy character, family and country. If ethics wane, the people -- and eventually the nation -- follow. As Founding Father Elias Boudinot once said, "If the moral character of a people once degenerate, their political character must soon follow."

Good morals precede good laws, which is why government isn't much help here. Unless the people and their legislators are grounded in morality, the best of laws will be broken and the worst of laws will be made, legalizing immorality. All the vetting in the world won't vanquish a corrupt human nature. That is why we can't look to government to improve decency, civility and morality. For that, we need to look to another source.

John Adams put it well when he said: "We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

Government isn't the answer. And neither is education, at least without religion. As Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, wrote, "Without religion I believe that learning does real mischief to the morals and principles of mankind."

Our Founders had a better answer than government or even education. God is the answer. God is the moral compass of America. Or he should be, if we ever want to restore morality in our homes and civility to our land. Our Founders believed that morals flowed from one's accountability to God and that without God, moral anarchy would result.

To the Founders, religion was an essential buttress of free government. That is why Patrick Henry wrote: "The greatest pillars of all government and of social life: I mean virtue, morality, and religion. This is the armor, my friend, and this alone, that renders us invincible."

Charles Carroll, who also signed the Declaration of Independence, wrote, "Without morals a republic cannot subsist any length of time; they therefore who are decrying the Christian religion whose morality is so sublime and pure are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments."

George Washington summarized it best in his farewell address: "Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle."

To encourage ethical living in youngsters, I recommend they read and practice "Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation," which George Washington wrote at age 14. To everyone else, I recommend Jacob Abbott's "Ethics: An Early American Handbook," a reprint of an 1890 study on ethics. Humbly, chapters 5 and 6 in my new book, "Black Belt Patriotism," also are devoted to how to rebuild a civil and moral society according to our Founders' vision. I lastly recommend Rushworth Kidder's "Moral Courage." Better still, attend his seminar in Washington, D.C., April 7. And stay attuned to ethical issues in politics by frequenting the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington's Web site (www.CitizensForEthics.org).

Of course, illegalities, immoralities and other ethics violations have existed in every age, including in our Founders' age, but they weren't as readily accepted and tolerated as they are today. Most led good, moral and decent lives. And most fought to elect those who would do the same, and so should we. Write your representatives today and demand, "Unethical nominees should not be appointed to govern our country!"

Mr. President, I'm doing my best as a patriot and a conservative to support you. But if your present choice of leaders is reflective of "the most sweeping ethics reform in history," then I respectfully would say, sir, you're sweeping in the wrong direction.

ethical government
Mr Norris I usually do not comment on postings here but I make exception for this article. Your column is well written and brings us truly to the heart of the problems we citizens face today. A corrupt leadership that cannot be trusted will inevitably lead us into a nation ending downward spiral. Such is our condition today. The source of this nations troubles can be traced directly to its leadership. Frankly though I doubt that we can survive long enough to overcome all that we will face in the next few years. And I can say from personal experience that getting good people to run will be a monumental task. But then this nation was founded by a people who faced a monumental task of their own.

The Depravity of Man
I'm not a Calvinist, it takes too many if's out of the Bible, but I will say that man, apart from God and His grace is depraved. That's a scriptural term for corrupt.

I've been as critical as anyone over the direction I've seen this nation take, especially in this election. It was a real wakeup call. Seeing this nation 'Sprinting towards Gomorrah' instead of just "Slouching Towards Gomorrah" as Robert Bork wrote, is
incredibly sad.

The Lord has been dealing with me the last couple of days to pray for Barack Obama, not just about him, but for him. So this morning I decided to see what Kimberly Daniels had to say. She had published the most powerful prayer I'd seen pre-election to explain what was happening at a spiritual level.

http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message651411/pg1

And true to form, her prayer for Obama serves as an excellent model for those of us who want to see God honored in our nation's life and God truly heal our nation.

Mr Norris
I can't help but notice that the party of tax and spend can't seem to pay their own taxes. You are right though, we need to turn to God for moral guidance and strength not man. This may hurt people in the psychology field but sometimes the truth hurts. Maybe if President Obama looked beyond the old Clinton retreads he might find someone ethical. Lord knows Clinton didn't act ethical so why would anyone think he surrounded himself with ethical and moral people?

Majority Morality
I think it might be too late Chuck. We have a sizable majority that have voted for the party that supports abortion on demand. At 67 years old, I find it hard to believe that the majority of us (especially women) think it is OK to kill their own babies.

Something to share with my daughter
I do not like the direction this country is being pulled toward. We can not have a tax cheat in charge of the IRS. We can not have a government whose goal is to suck as much power and wealth and control as they can from the american people who are toiling for the future freedom and success of our children and grandchildren.

My daughter likes to stun her HS classmates when she praises (in jest) Chuck Norris. She alway says, "do I have to call Chuck Norris to kick your butt." Well, maybe we do need to call Chuck Norris.

Ethics, or the lack of.
Greetings Chuck and everyone else,

Personally, I think it's time to get on the
stick and return to teaching Ethics and the
Golden Rule not only in the home, but in
school as well. Starting at the earliest age
possible, I have two kids in school and every-
thing my wife and I tried to teach them has
been undone by the over-indulgent public
school system, maybe I am a little hard, but I
went to a Catholic School, with Nuns and a
good steel ruler along side the head if I acted
up or mis-behaved in class, I truely wish there
was a school like that nearby, I would gladly
send them there...but I am thinking they are
already lost to public school mediocrity.
(I digress)
Anyway, We need to start teaching them Ethics
from and early age and also how to reconize
those people that have lesser values, and to
avoid becoming like them, or help guide these
people away from that kind of destructive
behaviour, by leading by example.

- Randy.

EXTRA materials at Norris WND exlusive
A MUST read is Norris' nearly twice as long exclusive of this same article
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/?pageId=88361

Here's an example of Norris EXTRA materials there...

"With over 90,000 names of registered sex offendersjust turned over from MySpace alone, do we really want one more high ranking politician who is soft on sexual crime and immoralities? I’d recommend Ogden and indeed everyone else watch the DVD, -“Someone’s Daughter—A Journey to Freedom from Pornography”

"I’m doing my best to support my president. I don’t want him to fail. And I do want to give him a chance to get out of the gates without criticizing every step he makes. But when he repeats the same sizable mistakes in choosing unethical and even immoral leaders, does anyone close to him propose that maybe he’s going down the wrong road—that his criteria need to change? Have we grown so calloused of political indiscretions and corruption that we don’t care about any leader’s moral standings anymore? Do we really want controversial cabinet members running our country? Are we supposing they will help usher in the “most sweeping ethics reform in history”?

REAL CHANGE
will take place when we, the voters, change. When we vote out 15-25% of the do-nothings in one election cycle, and then turn around and do it again in four years, we will see changes in every aspect of government.

MORE extra Norris materials #2
Norris ADDS in WND exclusive:

"The fact is that Obama has at his disposal more resources than any corporation on the planet to do a battery of background and psychological tests before even nominating anyone, but is he using them? Does he really have so few moral candidates from whom to choose that the only qualified ones are those who have straddled and gone over the ethical edge?

"I know Obama told multiple network news stations in a dozen different ways, “I screwed up” and “Nobody is perfect.” I have made my share of mistakes too, but I’m not the president and I didn’t promise all Americans to make historic ethic reforms in Washington. I’m all for “mea culpas” but what about my country? How many more leadership failings are we going to face? Should I or we keep silent until we reach 11 or 21 unethical appointees? We’re not even a month into Obama’s presidency!"

RESOURCE links too
Chuck gives no less than 25 embedded resource links throughout his same article at http://www.worldnetdaily.com/?pageId=88361

Spot on!
To be honest, I've never taken seriously your(well, any celebrity's) political viewpoint. But wow! You've nailed it. My work buddies argue about this very same subject all the time. Our leaders must be held to a higher standard. I argue this should also apply to our well paid, well endorsed athletes. Our children and our not-so-grown up (not so mature)adults need to be able to look up to these people as moral and personal examples.

Carry on! I'll be reading more often.

2nd generation of fathers agree
Though not a Founder, John Quincy Adams believed there were “three points of doctrine, the belief of which, forms the foundation of all morality.” He enumerated them: “The first is the existence of a God; the second is the immortality of the human soul; and the third is a future state of rewards and punishments. Suppose it possible for a man to disbelieve either of these articles of faith and that man will have no conscience, he will have no other law than that of the tiger or the shark; the laws of man may bind him in chains or may put him to death, but they never can make him wise, virtuous, or happy.”

Bar Pretty Low for Ethics
Chuck, I don't agree with you on much. But I will say this, the bar for ethics in Washington is pretty low. In some cases a politician could be caught running over orphans in a car paid for by the oil companies and still be on the same ethical ground as many of these 'reforms' the new administration is passing. That's Washington's biggest problem. There's no real accountability at that level of power. And because of that, nobody has an incentive to be as good as can be. There's only so much good that can come from certain public institutions and Obama's expectations are not just unrealisitc, they're downright impossible.

I do not need my ethics reformed.
I do not need my ethics reformed. However, the Dumbocrats do! But ...... !!!!

Sweeping ethics reform
Perhaps he understands well that the structural integrity of the nation depends on strong good ethics. His goal is to sweep all strong good ethical people from government and stack it with spineless corruption so that it will bring the country down to "equality with other nations".

The greatest nation the earth has ever known is headed for his vision of "global equality".

Ethics
Bravo Chuck! I so agree. Without teaching God, teaching morals and ethics has no basis, no accountability. Those that reject Him feel they answer to no one and do what benefit and please themselves without regard to anyone else. I too try to support our President and pray for him each day. But I feel he is leading this country down a path that I and other Christians cannot support. Our only hope is in the fact that God is still in control and He will have His way!

Some interesting notes
Probably the most ethical member of Congress is Joe Lieberman. While he votes his conscience, his conscience is firmly based in his Orthodox Jewish heritage.

Each new Congressional Season, all Representatives swear an oath to abide by the Constitution. Yet, somehow, these Representatives abide by the rules and dictates of their respective Political Party Leadership. Thus, 300 million Americans are eld captive by less than 500 men and women whose morals and ethics, if not intrinsically criminal, are suspect at the very least.

Spot On Chuck!
It seems to me that the American people are just figuring out that the emperor has no clothes. Chuck, you are a true patriot. Thanks for your service to our country.

Ethics is needed
In today's world ethics is often swept under the carpet in favor of political correctness, expediency or appearances to the world. weather we invoke god or not it seem the golden rule must apply in any belief system "do on to others as you would have them do onto you" with out it we can soon see chaos if not anarchy. a code of ethics is a guide a metric for behavior as a society; be it any skin color or ethnicity. good job chuck

Let us All
Make a firm resolution to repent (turn away from) the lack of integrety in our daily lives. Let us start today to be a shining example to all we meet of rebuilding the moral fiber than is frayed to the point of breaking this nation asunder. Let our "Heros" again be those who stood up to corruption and unethical pratices in their daily lives; those who refused to break or bend in the overwhelming face of ridicule for not going along and adopting unethicial lifestyles. Let our voices be heard that we will not tolerate unethical, and yes, criminal behaviour by those who are assigned with being our present day leaders. Decry often and boldly those things which we see distroying the moral fabric of the people of this nation, and by extention those who we have trusted to represent us. For if they act immoraly and corrupt; then can it be said that they do in fact represent the people of this nation? To many's chagrine, the teachings of God, and through Jesus Christ, are the baine of their existance in self absorbed morality (relativity). The very center of the Bible, absolute middle, is Psalm 118: Put not your faith (trust) in man, but in God the creator of all. This then is a good place to start individually, for if we do not change individually, how then can we expect others to follow a path of a higher moral standing; we need to be the example. See the movie Flywheel, a story about changing morals, ethics and direction in ones life, it will make you think; and hopefully act.

Obama Ethics?!?!?!
The Sail Eared Simpleton has the Ethics of a Typical Alinsky Marxist Subversive…NONE!

In today's world the golden rule
has been updated: "He who has the gold, rules."
This shall continue for the forseeable future, since not only are these people the ruling class, but they are making the rules up as they go along.

Politicians, like the offal in a septic tank, rise to the top. The more hollow and gaseous they are, the more quickly they rise.

A New Continental Congress...
Will be held in Philadelphia in just a little bit. Three delegates from each State will meet to discuss the terrible slide into lawlessness that has been experienced.
They will decide how to correct it--and re-place us into the Rule of Law--per the Constitution.
Chuck carries this concept through just fine--perhaps he should be one of the Delegates? I can think of few as well-read and clear-thinking to do so!
SEE NWV--Feb. 7 edition for more info. on this...it IS going to happen, and what is decided will be presented to BO and SCOTUS.
Majority is SUPPOSED to rule--let's see if it does, or if we need to step it up?

OBAMA "ethics" are an oxymoron...
Let's get back to Constitutional BASICS.

Ethics vs Morals
"Ethics" is the version of the worldly, secular man; he knows he should not cheat on his wife, but will think about. "Morals" is the religious, spiritual man`s version; he simply would never cheat on his wife, having pre-made his decision long before the "I do`s". Ethics is a poor substitute.

Washington's Rules of Civility
has been required reading in my children's charter school. Excellent stuff and VERY discussion provoking

Excellent column
William, I looked up that prayer by Kimberly Daniels and it is very good. I have been having a hard time praying for our president as commanded by God; instead just praying generic prayers for our leaders. So, thank you.

A Liar and a fraud
That's what a liar and fraud do ~ if not stopped or punished they continue to ransack any goodness that exists!
Tried emailing V.P. Biden to let him know that there is a greater "Judgment" coming and each will be held accountable. There's only a email "form" that goes to the "unholy" one's center.
No longer can we email the V.P. (unless someone can find his e-address and share it with us), like we could with Cheney. Everything is screened and "controlled."
If that's not what American's want, there needs to be a "House Cleaning" party.
Mr. Norris, care to lead the charge?
Thanks!

"HOG"DEN==ANOTHER SLIME BAG!!
.... trotting up to join the other devious trough slurpers who want to destroy this country! Another one of the Real Heroes appointed by Mr. Zero. Zero's Heroes!!! First in the hearts of pornographers, pedaphiles, and perverts. Isn't THAT special?????

MORALS ETHICS
How to convert a country to Communism. Start with the youngest children possible, train them into "THE WAY", and turn them against their parents and religion. The left has successfully taken over the educational system from K-PhD.With out morals there are no SINS. What is "if it feels good do it" other than an escape from both morals and ethics. With the Universal health care just passed in the senate they will now be able to speed up the demise of the old hard heads that still believe in such out dated things as morals, ethics, honesty, truth, religion, etc. GOOD BY TO MY USA.

Morals And Ethics At Home.
There is no doubt that if there is a deep and long recession homes will have to be shared. No civilized person would allow the unemployed and homeless to sleep in the streets while having an empty room. Those that refused to share their space would be rightfully punished by eviction. The task of living with a stranger can cause serious problems because food and sex would have to be shared. Our lives would be difficult but eventually the economy will return to normal and we all would get back our jobs and privacy.

Thomaspain
After all the reports of wrong-doings by ACORN before and during the election, I wonder if a majority DID vote for these people. I have talked to a lot of people that I don't even know, and it's running about 37% that say they did vote for him. I know this may not be real scientific and not really indicative of the direction the election actually took, but when in Cleveland alone you hear of thousands of illegal registrations, I really wonder. If things continue the path of the last few weeks, God help us because we won't be able to help ourselves.

Political Morals
Politicians are politically correct because it gets them votes. Politicians are hawks or doves, because it gets them votes. Politicians are liberal or conservative because it gets them votes. How then can they have morals?
Shakesphear wrote all the worlds a stage. Never has that been more true than in Washington. The politicians will demand you pay the taxes they assign to you, but do their best not to pay theirs. They decry the morals of the U.S. in combat but, have never served. They say they are religious, but use time in God's house to network, get votes, and look for photo ops. Poly (the root of politician) means many. Perhaps that's why so many politicians have more than one face.
Thanks Mister Norris, use your freedom of speech for as long as you have it.

FOUNDER"G MORALS
Chuck advises us to look back to our founding fathers for morality- now lets think weren't most of them racists, sexists, and elitest. Thanks, but no thanks Chuck . Bad as many of our modern leaders may be I will take most of them instead of our Founding Fathers.

Candidate of NO CHANGE
The candidate of change was in reality a candidate of NO CHANGE. The only "item" he changed again and again was his rehetoric. Geithner, Daschle, Pelosi, Reid, Barney Franks, Christopher Dodd, Clintons, Kerry, et al is NO CHANGE.

Of course 47% of the voters knew that. Once again proves that the majority is not necessarily correct. Today I read that even the NYT (that purveyor of lies and garbage) believes that the Iraq War was a success.

While I agree with the author's point...
...I'm hard pressed to imagine any way to make people believe in God. It would be wonderful if they all did, but how do you make constitutional liberty work in a nation where, by design of those same founders, folks are deliberately left free to believe or not, in God. Which, in turn is merely a recognition of the inherent free will of mankind.

There can be no other course. People may be coerced into mouthing a belief in God, as in our Pledge of Allegiance. But, there is no way to force anyone to believe in God, if anyone thought that that might be a good idea, which no one does.

All in all, it's an interesting article, but utterly useless in terms of designing a policy.

Hey Ragtop
Seems more of the kool-aid drinkers are more likely to believe in Obama than God.

Poor choice.

If you're "coerced" into the pledge of allegiance, maybe you should consider another country to live in...

Woody from Iowa

Woody
Amen to that, brother! And as far as the statement about our founding fathers, made earlier, the people we have are worse than elitests and such! Let's see, we have philanderers, thieves, confidence men(and women), Cowards and worse!!! I'll take our founding few!

Obama has an abundance of ethics
For a street organizer from Chicago, he is head and shoulders above the average pol from that armpit of the US of A.

The list of crooks is breathtaking.

I cannot believe that I am longing for the adult in Hillary. Wait,....isn't she from Chicago?.....Nevermind.

You dimwits have much to be proud of.

Anyhow, I doubt that she would have tried to jam this $hiite samich down our throats.

Just heard on the news
a guy was arrested in D.C. with a rifle who said he had a package for Obamma. Looks like the people are miffed about the bill and the low-lives that have been appointed to his cabinets. God help us all!!!

Jack "The Treasonous Traitor"

"The Federal Bureau of Investigation has raided a prominent defense-related lobbying firm with ties to Rep. John P. Murtha, one of three firms linked to the powerful Pennsylvania Democrat raided in the past three months.

Over the past two years, Mr. Murtha directed earmarks worth $93 million to PMA clients, according to the National Journal's Hotline publication. In the last two election cycles, he took in $1.3 million in contributions from the firm and its clients, which include big defense contractors as well as small firms located in his district."

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123430837059870387.html

Thank you Mr. Norris
Well written and to the point!! Most Americans believe the same but we are surrounded by those who try to indoctrinate our youth (I have a teenage son)in school teaching nothing about our founding fathers, our constitution, bill of rights, noless the peer pressure to be who they are not,and I paid a price for being a conservative with principled core values...but do it proudly .Then you add to that the Washington politics, state & local levels too & we all witness these inept poor role models that say do as i say not as i do.Our society is so broken and between those that feel "entitled" for the gov't to take care of them until the grave and those who know nothing of our founding fathers, add to that the feel good politics of the 90s and that anything goes...it will be our demise...unless WE THE PEOPLE take our country back because those to whom we have elected and trusted have betrayed us.The AGENDA is to be politically correct instead of living our core values which will bring our country back to where we need to be ...accountability for all. God help us !!

Remember when...
Remember when Thomas Jefferson raped slaves?

Chuck, I share your belief that our leaders SHOULD be exemplary, and that the recent appointments by Obama were very disappointing. But invoking the memory of the founding fathers is just hypocritical and blind. The hey-day of ethical leaders in America never really existed. It was a fairy tale. I'm not saying that none of our leaders have been ethical, or that we shouldn't expect them to be, but this "good old days" nonsense is just denial.

Also...
To all those claiming that without a belief in God, there can be no morals: you clearly have a very warped view of humanity. It is possible to be a good person without a fear of punishment or the hope of a reward. In fact, if there is a God (which I believe there is) than I think he would be prouder of those who doubt his existence, yet behave morally anyway, rather than those who simply behave because they are scared of going to Hell. Morality is simply treating others as you would like to be treated; a belief in God is not necessary for someone to believe this.

Agree with Chris
Compared to who?

Obama is running into a problem that his idealism did not anticipate, some of the most experienced people in Washington DC have all sorts of baggage. The challenge for him is what every President faces: balancing the experience the appointee needs to be effective, with how much the person did wrong along the way to obtaining that experience.

I'm not saying that we should allow anyone in. I'm saying that everyone who does hiring knows that some of the brightest people have made mistakes along the way. If we ran through the tax records of all previous Presidential appointees, do you think your favorite President hired perfect people? There are important things to watch from Obama, but this isn't one of them.
