Conventional punditry wisdom has been that Romney would do well in the south -- if only he could keep Mike Huckabee from stealing all the conservative voters from him. This, of course, ignores the cultural and social aspects of politics.
Putting religion aside, it really any surprise that a a wealthy businessman from Massachusetts wouldn't do well in Dixie?
