What Caused This? Countering Truthers With the Truth

My column today is on the "Top 5 9/11 Truther Myths You Should Be Prepared to Debunk:"

It’s the very definition of surreal, that day. It’s the day a scene reserved for far-fetched blockbusters became reality, when John McClane’s celluloid heroism fell to flesh-and-blood firemen and first responders.

But it was real. On that day, 19 young men—inhabitants of our country, recipients of our hospitality, beneficiaries of our prosperity, wearing modern clothes to cloak a primitive hatred—turned planes into missiles, passengers into war casualties, and a beautiful Tuesday morning into a day that changed the world forever. They were driven by a radical ideology, a charismatic leader, the funding of villains, and the protection of rogues. They killed 3,000 people that day.

But some people don’t believe that...

Sept. 11, 2001 was surreal. It was hard for every American to believe. That doesn’t mean we have license to ignore reality. Doing so just puts us in danger again.
A disturbing number of people don't believe the actual truth about 9/11 and go looking for other answers. It's important to counter theTrutherism with facts, so the column's got the basics on what Truthers believe and why it's wrong (although it's a small picking of the myriad wacky theories out there).

Truthers aren't satisfied with the facts, but we can't let their side go unanswered just because we think it's too crazy for anyone to actually believe. The fact is, we're up to 42 percent of Democrats who believe Bush either caused 9/11 or let it happen, according to a Zogby poll. Frightening for Democrats and Republicans alike who know the truth already-- the 19 hijackers committed mass murder that day in the name of radical Islam.

Check out the Popular Mechanics "Debunking 9/11 Myths" page, the Screw Loose Change blog, and Hot Air for Truther-watching.

Buy the Popular Mechanics book, here. Great read.

Join us today at Ground Zero for a Truther counter-protest, if you can. Details, here. Also at the link, a way for you to donate to Karol Sheinin who did the hard work of organizing and getting pamphlets printed. Help us out that way if you can't come. It's much appreciated!
