Talk About the Politics of Fear

Moveon.Org (they of the "General Betray Us" debacle) are running a new ad that this AP account describes as follows:

In the ad, an actress with an infant child speaks as if she were addressing McCain, the likely Republican presidential nominee.

"Hi John McCain," she says. "This is Alex. And he's my first. So far his talents include trying any new food and chasing after our dog. That, and making my heart pound every time I look at him. And so, John McCain, when you say you would stay in Iraq for 100 years, were you counting on Alex? Because if you were, you can't have him."

What a truly disgusting, craven commercial.

First, of course, we have a volunteer army.  So no one is going to "have" Alex, at any age, without his consent.  Second, McCain said staying in Iraq for 100 years was fine, as the linked YouTube video makes clear, only  "as long as Americans aren't being injured or harmed or wounded or killed."

Finally, of course, no mother wants to think of her son (or daughter) going off to war.  But has it occurred to Alex's mommy that -- if other mothers had adopted her "not my baby" attitude -- little Alex might be in much more jeopardy from terrorist attacks right here in the United States of America?  Or for that matter, he might be speaking German . . . or even be an English subject?

Too pathetic for words.
