Some 'Splaining to Do

FBI Director Robert Mueller has rightly denounced the Scottish justice minister for releasing on the grounds of "compassion" the terrorist responsible for the 1988 Lockerbie bombing.   This murderer was, of course, brought home to a hero's welcome.

What's noteworthy is this passage from the Guardian's account of the brouhaha:

[T]he Scottish government last night responded defiantly, insisting the US had made clear in discussions that, while it opposed Megrahi's release, it regarded freeing him on compassionate grounds because of his terminal cancer as "far preferable" to a prisoner transfer deal that would have seen him in custody.

Isn't it time that someone from the Obama administration explains exactly what communications took place between Washington and the UK regarding the release of an unrepentant terrorist?
