Sen. Joe Lieberman introduced an amendment to re-instate the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program (known colloquially as the voucher program) that President Obama and Congressional Democrats doomed last year, kicking hundreds of underprivileged kids out of their schools and forcing them elsewhere.
It wasn't a strict party-line vote. Alongside 38 Republicans, Democratic Sens. Lieberman, Feinstein, Nelson and Warner all voted for the measure. Sen. Olympia Snowe was the only Republican to vote against it, joining 54 Democrats to kill it.
This was an unsurprising outcome, being the third time that this program has come up for a vote. It is still a sad reminder that the Democratic party refuses to take positive steps for education reform.
For reasons unknown, the Democrats refuse to allow underprivileged students in D.C. to have an opportunity at a better education.
