On this day in 1901, then-U.S. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt uttered the famous phrase, "Speak softly and carry a big stick." "Big Stick diplomacy" described Roosevelt's foreign policy views--peacefully negotiate, but simultaneously threaten with the "big stick" (military power). Only 12 days after these remarks at the Minnesota state fair, President William McKinley was assassinated, ushering Roosevelt into the presidency.
